Toenail fungus??

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive October 2005: Toenail fungus??
By Truestori on Friday, October 14, 2005 - 02:16 pm:

I damage my big toenail about a a year ago. It was badly bruised and turned black underneath. From reading on the internet it suffered from a heomtoma(sp) anyhow I went to the doctor and made sure it would be fine etc..He said it looks great but a toenail that suffers trauma is more likely to develop a fungal infection.
Well,
Its been about 5 months and I notice my toenail is turning white and starting to get flaky..So, I am assuming that it is the start of a fungus problem and I am wondering if anyone here has sucessfully gotten rid of this. I love to polish my toes and now I can't boohoo...LOL
I know about the Lamisil pills but I don't want any damage to my liver over a toenail!
TIA

Stori, I wish I knew away to get rid of it too. I have it on both my big toes. The doctor also wanted to give me Lamisil and in no way was I taking that. You have to have blood test to test the liver. Not.. I had this one page book marked but haven't tried any of them. Hope someone has a remedy for this problem.

Tea tree oil....use a q-tip to apply it to the top and underside of the nail one or two times daily....may take awhile (but so do the pills). You can get a small bottle at Walmart (In the pharmacy department) for under 5 bucks and that should last you quite awhile considering what you would be using it for.

Hi, Truestori!

I'd go ditto on the tea tree oil. Also, if you soak it in a solution of a gallon of water with 1 cup of bleach for 20 minutes every night may work. Actually, a doc told me that one but he did say it would take a looong time, as do the pills and tea tree oil.
Oh, btw, a hematoma is a fancy name for a bruise.

Thanks everyone,

I truly appreciate all of the helpful hints. :)

Tea tree oil might work - Jules used it for ringworm when Madison had a ringworm on her leg. It took a long time, but it worked.

I *think* nail fungi are a bit more difficult to get rid of, than something like ringworm, but I'd give the tea tree oil a shot, and maybe the bleach thing too.

I double checked with my doc (saw him recently.) He said that it's actually 1/2 cup bleach to 1 gallon water, soak for 10 minutes, 3 nights a week, and it will take 6-9 months. My precious info wasn't as accurate. sorry.

Sorry again, didn't mean to say "precious" but "previous."
