Who wants to send me some snow??

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive October 2005: Who wants to send me some snow??
By Karen~moderator on Tuesday, October 11, 2005 - 09:57 pm:

LOL

My A/C broke today! It is 80 degrees in my house, and I feel like I am suffocating. UGH!

I called my A/C guy, and he hasn't gotten back with me. I *think* the freon line blew, there was a *small* (according to him) leak in it and he charged it up a few months ago. Now there is only warm air coming out.

Soooo......anyone feel like sending some snow my way???

By Annie2 on Tuesday, October 11, 2005 - 10:19 pm:

UUUghhh! Karen, after we all just wished you great cheer upon hearing about your amazing dd and your renewed friendship with your other dd. Another straw for the camel's back?

I can't send you snow but can send along positive vibes! :)

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, October 12, 2005 - 12:18 am:

Karen, that happened to us in August. We got back from Niagara Falls and turned on the AC. AFter 6 hours, the house wasn't any cooler. Called the guy out. He recharged the freon. It made "ice cubes" for about a day, and then was back to it's old tricks. DH wanted to wait until October to get a rebate. We did buy a little window unit for the bedroom, since August is still pretty muggy up here.

We could pay about $300 to have a leak check done, but I think we would be better off just getting a new unit and saving that money.

I hope yours can be fixed.

By Karen~moderator on Wednesday, October 12, 2005 - 07:30 am:

I don't need a new unit, this one is less than 7 years old, and my maintenance contract is with the guy who installed it.

But the freon line has to be replaced - I *think* that's what he alluded to last time when he charged up the freon.

I HOPE it doesn't mean replacing anything more major!!!!!!!!!!!!

Big sweaty hug. LOL.

Oh no, Karen! ((HUG)) Sending you some *cool* vibes.:)

By Karen~moderator on Wednesday, October 12, 2005 - 10:45 am:

Well, I spent an HOUR driving to work - the traffic around here is AWFUL, because every day they are opening up more zip code areas in New Orleans for people to come back and see if they can salvage anything. So they come right through my area to get there, and shop and get gas, since there is nothing open in those areas. My morning drive normally takes 20-25 minutes.

Anyway, I get to work, call the A/C office, they tell me he will be here in ONE HOUR! GRRRR!!!! I turned around to come home, which was another 40 minute trip in this direction, and now they are 45 minutes late! I just called and they are on the way, I realize there is heavy traffic for them as well. I just wish someone had called me to let me know this BEFORE I left for work.

Oh well, I'll stop complaining and whining, just cross your fingers that it can be repaired today!!!

By Karen~moderator on Wednesday, October 12, 2005 - 01:12 pm:

UGH! A $600 *repair* scheduled for tomorrow. NOT happy about this.

By Debbie on Wednesday, October 12, 2005 - 01:34 pm:

Oh Wow, Karen. What about your maintenance contract?? {{{hugs}}}

By Karen~moderator on Wednesday, October 12, 2005 - 02:03 pm:

That only covers routine maintenance. This is more than that.

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, October 12, 2005 - 07:32 pm:

Ouch. That's expensive!

It gets worse. Apparently, when the flooring was being installed, and the guys were preparing the slab and undercutting the fireplace, all that cement dust went straight to the coils, even though I changed the filter every single day they were here. They spent several hours this morning, removing the coil unit, using chemicals to *try* to clean it, and the cement dust is hardened in them. I'd say they got it about 60% clean. Which will work for a short time, but definitely will be no good come next spring. So that was $600 worth of repair, basically for nothing, IMO.

Bottom line is we now have to replace the coil unit, still don't know how much that will be. I am just sick over this. And as much as I hate to break down in public, I cried at work like a baby. Geez! DH and I discussed it, and we decided we need to do it sooner rather than later - if we wait until next spring when temps start rising, we may end up with NO A/C for a few days. As I understand it, they have to order the coil unit anyway. Heck, it's still in the mid to upper 80's here now, and the A/C runs all the time anyway.

I guess this explains my $274.00 electric bill for the month of August. Another thing to make me sick. I haven't had an electric bill that high since we replaced the entire system 7 years ago. I imagine the longer it goes on with the damaged coils, the longer it will be higher than it should too. So that's another reason to get it done sooner rather than later.

I dropped by the flooring place on the way to work to pick up the extra box of the flooring they had for me since ours is now discontinued, and the sales girl we had was not there. I was going to tell her how unhappy I was about this, since they SHOULD have known this was a possibility, if the crew they use has any clue what they are doing. I am ticked off to the max! I want to see if they will cover at least part of the cost, since IMO it is partially their fault! Had I known that ruining my A/C was a possibility, I would have made them work in the heat and sweat. But I'll have to call her tomorrow. The place was packed, gazillions of people in there ordering/picking out new flooring for their flood damaged homes, and I couldn't get anyone's attention who would know about my problem.

I wonder what my recourse might be in a situation like this? I guess I can say life is never dull around here.... it's like being a yo-yo.

By Ginny~moderator on Thursday, October 13, 2005 - 06:04 pm:

Karen, the first thing I would do is to try to find another floor installing company - maybe someone through Home Depot, and tell them what happened and what a good floor installer should do. Second, read your contract for the floor installation and see if the company is licensed in your community. Some kinds of work require licensing, others don't, and I don't know what the rules are in your area (in my area everyone has to be licensed except the neighbor kid who shovels your walk or mows your lawn). If they are licensed, they almost certainly have liability insurance. And, the contract itself may, in the small print, refer to liability insurance or damage insurance or something like that.

Do this homework, and get back to me by email. I have some thoughts, but would rather share them one on one.

I agree - anyone who works with concrete knows it creates dust, and minimally they should have told you so that you could vacuum out the air conditioner yourself before it hardened.

By Karen~moderator on Thursday, October 13, 2005 - 06:17 pm:

Thanks Ginny! As for vaccuming out the air conditioner, there is no way we could have gotten to the coils to do that.

By Ginny~moderator on Thursday, October 13, 2005 - 06:23 pm:

Well, OK, but again, minimally they should have said something so you would know to have it serviced. Anyhow, get me what information you can, and we'll go from there.

By Amecmom on Friday, October 14, 2005 - 09:53 am:

Just to throw in my two cents - the floor guy should have know about the dust and COVERED the unit to prevent it from being damaged.

Ame, I agree with you. The question, however, is what is the standard - which another floor installation company can tell Karen.
