Drying up...TMI???

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive October 2005: Drying up...TMI???

I quit breast feeding the day before Easter & I still have breast milk. Not a lot, just enough to make my breasts feel heavy. Is this normal? I am wondering if I need to go talk to the doctor or just not worry about it. Some one mentioned that I could have a problem with my pituitary gland that would cause my not drying up. Any thoughts or ideas?

That sounds like a long time to me. It couldn't hurt to give your Dr. a call.

I stopped on May 5 and was probably dry a few days later - though at that point we were down to one quick nursing session/day. I agree with Eve.

Oh gosh, I still occasionally experienced let down several months after I weaned my youngest. A very tiny bit but enough for me to notice. It certainly wouldn't hurt to call your doctor and ask.

I nursed for a week and still had small amounts of milk coming out 4mths. It might just be differnet for everyone, but I would call your doc. just to be sure.

i had let down for a VERY long time afterwards. My youngest is now 7 and on a rare occasion in the shower i still get a drop or two that comes out. Some people do just have overactive glands. However leaking can be a sign of a pituatary tumor, it is a simple blood test to rule that out. I did have that run, probably when my little guy was about 2. I would mention it to your doc, it is probably not a big deal though.

I had bits of milk leaking for a couple of years. Our pediatrician was a breast feeding specialist, and assured me it was perfectly normal. Her daughter was about 4 at the time, and she could still express a bit.

Thank you all for the information. I will talk to my doctor & see if she thinks that I need to have any blood work done. I have a thyroid problem as it is, so better safe then sorry.
