How do you get out a mildew stain?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive September 2005: How do you get out a mildew stain?

DD's shirt was wet in the laundry. By the time I got to it, I realized that I washed and dried it with mildew stains. The shirt is yellow/gold and she has to wear it tomorrow for spirit day!

HELP!!

I had this problem a few times:( You can try these methods below that I tried but I didn't have any luck.
Good Luck!

Before getting the item wet or washing it, spray it with the Gold Cap kind of Lysol Disinfectant. (The blue one does NOT work!!) Saturate the mildew completely, let the item sit overnight, then wash as normal with liquid detergent.

Mildew: Wash the garment in warm or hot water with oxygen bleach, depending on the fabric, and line dry or dry flat in direct sunlight.
Mildew Stains

To remove mildew from washable fabric, follow these procedures. First, brush to remove excess spores.

Then apply an enzyme solution to the stain. Enzymes such as Biz and Axion are available in the grocery store. One-half teaspoon should be mixed with 1/2 cup of warm water. Other laundry products which state they act upon protein stains may be substituted. Keep an absorbent pad moistened with the enzyme solution on the stain for 30 minutes. Then flush with water.

If stain remains, apply a solution consisting of 1/2 teaspoon mild dish detergent, a few drops of vinegar and 1/2 cup of water. Blot and then flush with water. If stain still remains, apply rubbing alcohol with an absorbent pad. Blot and flush with alcohol.

I have never had luck either. I had it on a white towel that we used in the garage for washing cars etc. I even used bleach and it was still there.....

I found this product called AMAZE, it's a laundry detergent. I had some items that had yellowed and figured I had tried everything else, and it worked. The only thing is, they had to soak for a few days. I thought I had ruined a pair of beige pants when they were thrown with the colors and to my surprise, after soaking for a few days, they're like new!! Maybe it's the soaking for a few days that did it, or the fact I did put a bit more detergent in the water, either way, they came out great.

Mildew will actually rot fabric. If it has started rotting, there is little you can do because to get rid of the stain you must get rid of the rotten threads of the fabric. There is a product that I use for antique linens called Whink. It is very strong and can be found at ACE Hardware. Lemon juice mixed with salt is great, especially if you can leave the stain in the sun after applying.

My sons shirt got mildew stains all over it, it got in the bottom of the laundry basket with a wet towel on top. It was a yellow and navy polo and he wore it once..killed me. I dumped liquid Chlorox 2 (make sure it is chlorox 2-nonchlorine)and let it sit overight then washed it and it came out after I did that twice. For me that is the only thing I have found that will take off mildew. But it has to sit for a while.
