As many of you know I work at a hospital for women and children. It is primarily a maternity hospital with the largest acute NICU in the state. We have received expectant mothers and very sick preemies from New Orleans and are bursting at the seams. Our department is gathering donations for the following items:

Diapers – all sizes
Sanitary napkins
Plus sized maternity clothes (200 – 400 # women)
Baby bottles – all sizes
Baby wipes
Any diaper rash ointment
New infant car seats

If any of you would like to donate and know that it will specifically be going to patients at Womans Hospital in Baton Rouge, you can email me at pamela dot terrell at gmail.org and I will send you my address. As I recieve items I will take them to work where they will be given to pregnant mothers and new babies.

Thanks so much!
Pam

gmail.org? Is that correct, Pam??

By Pamt on Saturday, September 3, 2005 - 12:13 am:

gmail.com---sorry, very tired. Also, I misspelled "recEive"---off to bed now.

Pam, I just saw a doctor speaking from your hospital on ABC news. I will be emailing you for your address.
I would love to help out.

Can we send things directly to that hospital?

By Pamt on Saturday, September 3, 2005 - 11:25 am:

YES! At the time I originally posted this, they didn't have a mail-in donation address established. While I think this address is supposed to be primarily for monetary donations, I can't imagine that they wouldn't graciously accept diapers, wipes, etc. because it is the physical address of the hospital. If you include your return address I'm sure they will send you a tax deduction form, so please send donations directly to the hospital. Any money they receive will go to buy supplies not received, particularly carseats. And Trina...there is a CPST person employed by the hospital, so you can be assured that they will be installed correctly. :)

Oh...and to give you some specifics. There are currently 116 babies in NICU (that's HUGE!) and labor and delivery are at full capacity. All elective surgery (this hospital also does a fair amt of cosmetic surgery) has been cancelled temporarily. I just got called in to work on the 4th floor and in the NICU on Monday. These are things I normally don't do, but they are desperate for hands to feed and change babies and don't want outside volunteers because of liability issues.

I am just thinking out loud here, but maybe in the rush of things no one though of it, but have they contacted places like Johnson & Johnson and some of the other big baby supply places for diapers etc? I bet they would be more than willing to send some cases of supplies too!!

By Pamt on Saturday, September 3, 2005 - 11:37 am:

I'm sure they are getting stuff from them too---they get freebies from them all of the time anyway. But...I think there are normally about 40 babies in the NICU, so that's a huge increase in diapers needed. Plus, on floor of the hospital and the conference rooms have become shelters for family members of moms and babies, so you have other kids there needing diapers too.

Johnson and Johnson is donating a ton of supplies to the relief efforts.

Pam, DH and I are going out shopping today. I'll see what we can buy.

Pam, I just wrote you an email. Our real estate agent is in close contact with the Salvation Army and he is going to try to contact you via email so you guys can get things to the babies and mothers.

Would it be ok to donate new bras, underwear, and possibly baby clothes?
