By Jewlz on Thursday, September 1, 2005 - 02:40 am:

I just started an early childhood developemnt class on communication and would luv to have some help.
I have to list a few things u have to told to do to help u with ur new born baby that was suppose to help it. Like ole wives tales.

example: let the baby cry. it will do him some good for his lungs.

By Kaye on Thursday, September 1, 2005 - 09:16 am:

I was told not to bend over during pregnancy or it will wrap the cord around the baby's neck.

By Mrsheidi on Thursday, September 1, 2005 - 09:35 am:

"Sleeping on your tummy causes bow-leggedness."

By Kernkate on Thursday, September 1, 2005 - 10:06 am:

"Outie" bellybuttons occur when the doctor cuts or ties the cord incorrectly.

Don't let babies brace their legs to "stand" on your laps, or they will become bow-legged.

"Cats can steal the air from a baby's mouth."
"Wearing shoes will help a baby learn to walk sooner."
"Don't breastfeed a toddler during pregnancy because the new baby needs all the nourishment it can get."
"Giving your infant cereal will help him to sleep through the night."
"You should force your picky eater to finish his dinner."
"Don't put the kids to bed with a wet head or they will get sick."

I have heard all these from my mother..lol, but when in doubt ask a real doctor.

found these

Myth: Newborn babies should stay indoors for the first three weeks.

Fact: You can take a newborn baby outside anytime.

Doctors used to recommend keeping a newborn baby indoors at home for several weeks. There is no threat to going outdoors, even in the winter. Just dress the child appropriately and take victory laps around the neighborhood showing off your new family addition. You can take the baby to malls and anywhere else. I often point out that a newborn child that goes home to a house full of young siblings will get exposed to a lot more germs than in any mall or airplane.

Myth: Boil the water when preparing infant formula.

Fact: Tap water is fine.

Bacteria counts in tap water are low and safe to drink. You can simply take water from the tap and mix it with formula in the bottle. If you are making a large amount of formula for the day, it makes sense to warm up the water so the powder dissolves easier.

Also, you do not need to sterilize the bottles and nipples in boiling water, as was recommended in the past. Dishwashers do a great job of sterilizing bottles. If you do not have a dishwasher do not worry because washing the bottle with soap and water is good enough.

An important point, though, is to keep the kitchen counter clean and avoid contact with anything (i.e. sponges) that has touched raw meat or poultry since the bacteria in meat can be dangerous to infants. You should wash sponges or dish towels every day or two since they often harbor bacteria.

I was told that if I lifted my arms above my head, that that could wrap the cord around the neck! Sheesh. Okay, I was a nurse. How could I possibly hang IV bags, if I couldn't lift my arms above my head? LOL!

Emily did have the cord around her neck, but I'm sure that that's not the reason! LOL!

Newborn babies don't sleep through the night because they have day and night backwards. To correct this, flip your baby backwards all the way around.

I hope I described that clearly. Someone actually told me to do this with ds #1! LOL.

By Crystal915 on Thursday, September 1, 2005 - 11:16 am:

Don't tickle the baby's feet, or he'll develop a stutter. (I SWEAR my grandmom told me this when my kids were born!!)Dawn, I also heard the lifting your arms thing, as well as "Don't wear high heels" for the same reason.

By Breann on Thursday, September 1, 2005 - 01:48 pm:

OMG Crystal, I was told the same thing about the feet, lol. I was also told not to play with the baby's bottom lip, like when trying to make them smile, or they would develop a stutter.

Don't reach things out of the top cabinet or the umbilical cord will wrap around the babies.

Melanie, I was told to roll my babies backwards, to the left, so they would sleep better. Didn't work!

ROFL, some of these are just to funny.

By Trina~moderator on Thursday, September 1, 2005 - 02:40 pm:

I was told these as a new mother.smileyrollingeyes

- Don't hold the baby too much or he will become spoiled.

- Always keep something on his feet or he will get a tummy ache.

- It's OK to hold him or breastfeed while in the car. smileybugeyes

thank you so much these helped so much! my mind went blank as soon as the teacher posted this for homework. lol after two kids and having them in the mountains of north ga. I had heard many many of these.

By Dawnk777 on Friday, September 2, 2005 - 12:01 am:

What in the world would the lack of foot coverings have to do with a tummyache!? My kids didn't wear shoes until they were about 9-10 months old and starting to stand more!

By Amecmom on Friday, September 2, 2005 - 08:33 am:

My favorite pearl of wisdom from my father is that gas is good for the baby - it makes him move around more ....

By Cybermommyx4 on Friday, September 2, 2005 - 07:10 pm:

How about "if you have heartburn while you are pregnant, the baby will be born with a lot of hair"? I heard that repeatedly, and had lots of hearburn, but all my babies were BALD until at least the age of 1. LOL!

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, September 3, 2005 - 08:49 am:

Cybermommy, I have always heard that one, too!

Also, that crying was good for their lungs!
