Important QUESTION for anyone in the medical field or knows someone who is...

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive September 2005: Important QUESTION for anyone in the medical field or knows someone who is...
By Monicamomof3 on Wednesday, August 31, 2005 - 05:18 pm:

As most of you know I am 8 weeks preg. with baby #4! I was researching my OB of choice when I came across this:

It had the Physician's name and the License # and then under his/her name it said this:

An Agreed Order was entered on 12-13-02 suspending the physician's license; however, the suspension was stayed and the physician was placed on probation for five years under certain terms and conditions. Action due to unprofessional or dishonorable conduct that is likely to deceive or defraud the public or injure the public; and prescribing or administering a drug or treatment that is nontherapeutic in nature or nontherapeutic in the manner the drug or treatment is prescribed.

HELP...INTERPRETATION PLEASE! What does this mean.

Thanks everyone!

Not sure what it means, but I think *I'd* switch docs!

By Colette on Wednesday, August 31, 2005 - 05:22 pm:

I'd find another OB quick. Good luck.

I dont' think I would want that doctor for mine. Where did you go to get the information?

By Vicki on Wednesday, August 31, 2005 - 05:26 pm:

Yikes, don't know exactly what that means either, but if it is from a reliable place, I think I would run the other way from that one.

By Tayjar on Wednesday, August 31, 2005 - 05:37 pm:

This means your doctor has been in trouble for some medical decision he/she made and is now on probation and will be until 2007. The fact the license was not suspended and the doctor was put on probation makes it look like it was more of a poor decision than medical imcompetence. But, I wouldn't take a chance with my baby.

You can call your state licensing agency and ask for details. If they won't give it to you, do a search in your local paper to get the scoop.

By Kay on Wednesday, August 31, 2005 - 05:48 pm:

If you did a search, and that appeared, chances are that the it's public record. Call your state medical licensing board and request a copy of the order. If you have any trouble getting through, email me and I'll use my channels - mommakay77 @ yahoo.com

I also realized that we're both in Texas - let me know if you need that phone number - I just received my monthly report on license revocations/suspensions.

By Ginny~moderator on Wednesday, August 31, 2005 - 07:10 pm:

It is entirely possible - and I would think likely - that your doctor did something involving prescribing drugs that should not have been prescribed - "and prescribing or administering a drug or treatment that is nontherapeutic in nature or nontherapeutic in the manner the drug or treatment is prescribed."

The other may relate to improper billing to an insurance company or a state agency (Medicare) or federal agency (Medicaid). "Action due to unprofessional or dishonorable conduct that is likely to deceive or defraud the public or injure the public." - or holding him/herself out to be able to perform procedures for which s/he has not taken training.

If it were me, this is not a doctor I would choose. Most medical disciplinary boards are very reluctant to discipline a doctor. My gut reaction is that this doctor's activities had to be much worse than most doctors' "mistakes" for this to happen. And, doctors are almost never, never disciplined for losing medical malpractice lawsuits. It is almost always for really really serious violatios of the state's rules.

Just out of curiousity, I saw you were in Houston, does this happen to be dr korman, if so I know the scoop :)

By Breann on Wednesday, August 31, 2005 - 09:39 pm:

I would say it means "RUN" to a different doctor :)

By Feona on Thursday, September 1, 2005 - 08:56 am:

How did you find out that information? I didn't think that stuff was available for us to look at?

I would get another doctor too.

By Kittycat_26 on Thursday, September 1, 2005 - 09:22 am:

I do the credentialing and look at these messages all the time at work for our network of physician.

Ginny hit the nail on the head most likely with her interpretation. The only other thing to add is that since he is still practicing, it was most likely a first offense.

Even if you don't switch doctors because of this info., you may want to change because of the length of time you are going to rely on this doctor. If, and I do say if, he would default under his probation, his license would be revoked immediately. This would leave you and his other patients without a physician and likely very pregnant.

Here is the link where I got the information:

http://www.tsbme.state.tx.us/news/Newsletter/June_July_2003_Newsletter.htm

This seems to be one of the most recommended doctors for VBAC and he has a low c-section rate.

Kaye, since it's already public info. I'll tell you his name and license number:

Guilliams, Stephen E., M.D., Houston, TX, Lic. #E2591

Any info would be great. I just want to know what it was that he did.

Thanks everyone.

Monica - you may want to edit your post. If you decide to use this doctor and he googles his name and this post comes up - well, think about it.

By Monicamomof3 on Thursday, September 1, 2005 - 04:46 pm:

how should I edit it?

Thanks Ginny

how do I edit/reword it to say the same thing, but just to keep it from coming up in a google search?

By Kaye on Friday, September 2, 2005 - 12:40 am:

houston is a big place, i probably wouldn't worry about! i read your profile and there really isn't too much info. Honestly, if i chose to see a doc and he googles his name and see i was inquiring, I just don't think it would be a big deal. I might even mention it when meeting him, well i was checking you out, what does this mean?

By Vicki on Friday, September 2, 2005 - 07:59 am:

I wouldn't think it were a big deal either. I think it is important to check out a doctor that you are thinking about using. It is on the internet and information that anyone could get. If he has a problem with you checking him out and investigating what he may have done, that would be yet another red flag for this guy!! Of course, that is just my opinion.

By Kay on Friday, September 2, 2005 - 08:44 pm:

Monica,
As I mentioned earlier, it's possible I could get a copy of the report for you - my office processes these on a monthly basis in Texas. This would include full details of the disciplinary order.
I left my email address earlier in the thread.
