Evacuation

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive August 2005: Evacuation
By Karen~moderator on Saturday, August 27, 2005 - 04:23 pm:

We have been under mandatory evacuation since early this morning. We have reservations in Memphis, TN. What we are going to do is wait until the late advisory tonight, or the one in the wee hours of the morning and make our decision. If the hurricane is still tracking towards New Orleans, we are outta here @ 4:00 AM Sunday!

By Amecmom on Saturday, August 27, 2005 - 04:31 pm:

Oh, Karen! Good luck and be safe. I'll be praying for you!
Ame

By Yjja123 on Saturday, August 27, 2005 - 04:56 pm:

Keep safe! You are in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep us posted if you can.

By Anonymous on Saturday, August 27, 2005 - 04:57 pm:

Oh, Karen, I hope everything is ok!! Stay safe!

By Crystal915 on Saturday, August 27, 2005 - 04:58 pm:

OOPS! I didn't mean to make that anon!! It was me **blush**

By Karen~moderator on Saturday, August 27, 2005 - 05:31 pm:

UGH! Now the Weather Channel is advising people evacuating from New Orleans NOT to go north, they say *go west*. Well, that's all fine and good, but there are no rooms available in western LA and in TX!!!

We originally had a room reserved in Little Rock, and decided Memphis would be better so we found one there. I just wish we could skip the whole thing.

Haven't even upacked the house from the flooring being installed this week, so don't know where ANYthing is right now. I guess we will just keep the reservation in Memphis and hope for the best. Maybe it will shift and we won't have to go at all?!? Wishful thinking.............

By Moeanne on Saturday, August 27, 2005 - 05:53 pm:

Karen, we are in Beaumont, Texas and you are right. Available rooms are few and far between. I did check in Silsbee for you (15 miles from Beaumont) and they had rooms but were not making reservations, first come first serve.

I hope your wishful thinking works. We are watching too, being basically on the border of LA ourselves. Doesn't take much rain to flood here. Take care.

By Pamt on Saturday, August 27, 2005 - 06:33 pm:

Karen, you are welcome to come stay with us LITERALLY. We have air mattresses and couches and plenty of room. Just got back from loading up on water, peanut butter, bread, crackers, and matches. I am quite serious in my offer. Email me if you need my phone number pamela dot terrell at gmail.com. Of course we are still in the "cone" but on the west side which isn't nearly so bad. Our welcome mat is out. The more the merrier! :)

By Tink on Saturday, August 27, 2005 - 06:59 pm:

Karen, whether you end up evacuating or not, please be safe and know we'll be thinking of you.

By Bea on Saturday, August 27, 2005 - 07:05 pm:

Stay safe, Karen.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Saturday, August 27, 2005 - 08:04 pm:

By Karen~moderator on Saturday, August 27, 2005 - 11:11 pm:

Thanks for the offer Pam, but I don't think you'd appreciate my 70 lb. HAIRY dog! LOL

We re-made the reservation in Little Rock, so we have reservations there and in Memphis. We're getting up and plan to be ready to go at 4 AM or so, will listen to the newest advisory and go from there..............

Anyone else in the path, stay safe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Marcia on Saturday, August 27, 2005 - 11:40 pm:

Be safe, Karen!!!!

By Pamt on Saturday, August 27, 2005 - 11:49 pm:

Hope you have a safe trip Karen. We're going to stay here and hunker down. DH had to run to Home Depot to pick up something random and he took a picture of the people sitting in chairs waiting for a new shipment of generators to arrive. I bought the 4th to last loaf of bread at the grocery today. Yikes!! At least I'm thinking the boys won't have school on Monday and that will be cool. Check in if you can and I'll try to keep you updated on what's going on here...if we keep our power.

By Missmudd on Sunday, August 28, 2005 - 01:16 am:

All you ladies in the path of the big blow, please be careful and good luck :)

By Karen~moderator on Sunday, August 28, 2005 - 03:39 am:

I can't sleep. I slept for 2 hours. I am scared to death, scared to stay and scared to go. It's a Cat 4, 145 MPH winds, projected to be a Cat 5 upon landfall, and still heading this way.

I am terrified that we are going to come back to nothing - it's a pretty sick feeling.

And to add insult to injury - today is/was my mom's birthday.

There are a few more boxes of *things* I'm getting ready to put *up high* - which means off the floor. I just can't stand the thought of leaving everything here and possibly coming back to find it gone.

By Karen~moderator on Sunday, August 28, 2005 - 04:04 am:

If there was ever a time I wished for a mommy-van, this is it. I can't even take my pictures with me. If I had a van, or even a truck, I could pack it full.

By Kim on Sunday, August 28, 2005 - 06:05 am:

Annie, what are you doing? We are right on that fine line and I think I am taking the kids to Jax. Ivan curved right at the last minute and this storm is so darn BIG. If we stay and it forges even a little to the right, plus we are in the right quad of such a large, forceful storm...I'd rather be made fun of for leaving. I think this one is going to be catastrophic.

I am praying for everyone who is in the path of this one. Karen, don't know if you have net access, will talk to you soon.

By Colette on Sunday, August 28, 2005 - 06:25 am:

Good luck everyone!

By Feona on Sunday, August 28, 2005 - 07:26 am:

Oh my. Did you have to go? Hope everyone is well.

By Jann on Sunday, August 28, 2005 - 08:01 am:

Karen, sending hugs today. That first birthday is so hard not to mention the stress of a hurricane!

By Pamt on Sunday, August 28, 2005 - 09:18 am:

Well, my college classes are cancelled for tomorrow. I'm sure kids' school will be cancelled as well. Just waiting on the official word. There's a big meeting at 10 am to decide about closures. I haven't been out on the roads since yesterday afternoon, but DH says traffic is horrible!!

By Kernkate on Sunday, August 28, 2005 - 09:20 am:

{{{Karen}}} and everyone in the storms path, {{{big hugs}}} and hope you are all at a safe place.

{{HUGS AND PRAYERS FOR ALL OF YOU}} !!!! You are in our thoughts constantly...

By Momofmax on Sunday, August 28, 2005 - 02:31 pm:

We left this morning from Plaquemines Parish (almost as south as you can get in Louisiana) at 4 am and are headed out to my sisters a little more west. The roads were very crowded but traffic was moving. My SUV was packed with photos, important papers, dog, kid...the important stuff. It's hard to decide what to leave behind but hopefully we will all be safe and that's all that matters. It's still hard to leave all the stuff and the peace of your own home.

By Emily7 on Sunday, August 28, 2005 - 02:57 pm:

Thoughts & prayers go out to all of you in the path of this hurricane.

By Karen~moderator on Sunday, August 28, 2005 - 04:03 pm:

Jeanne, how far west? As you guys can tell, I made it to Memphis!!!! 8 hours, which wasn't bad, considering.....

We left @ 5:10 this morning, but had to wait for our room to be cleaned! It's raining here and will get worse, but not nearly as bad as it is on the Gulf Coast!

Even have internet access! LOL

Just very concerned about where the storm will end up going ashore and how much damage we will have.

By Missmudd on Sunday, August 28, 2005 - 04:05 pm:

Watching the news and practically biting my nails and I live in Oregon, I dont know how you guys handle this. Prayers for all of you and please try to be safe. God bless.

By Annie2 on Sunday, August 28, 2005 - 06:23 pm:

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in this storms path. It is gigantic and will pose problems months from now for the land it will hit.

We are staying put. We are out of the range of it so far. Hopefully it stays that way. We have boards for the windows but haven't put them up yet. We're keeping a very close eye on the storm. The kids are out of school tomorrow and probably Tuesday as well since their school is an evac sight and will need to be cleaned up before classes will resume.

By Nicki on Monday, August 29, 2005 - 01:12 am:
