Hello all, I'm an old regular but I haven't been here in a while. I always come when I need some good advice! Anyway, I'm posting anonymous for privacy reasons because I do know personally a couple of you....anyway....

My DH's job security is looking pretty bad. We think that his company is going to go under in the next year or so. Anyway, we are looking into the possibility of relocating. One of the places that we are looking at is Las Vegas, but I don't know anybody who lives there....any of you now or in the past????? We lived in Phoenix for several years and love living in the west (now we live in the mid west. Any input as far as how the city works (neighborhoods or areas that are good or bad) and any other input would really be appreciated.

Thanks!

I don't know about anything past the strip. LOL Other than it is very hot there. Just wanted to wish you luck, it has to be a little un-nerving for you!!

I lived in Vegas for a year, as a kid growing up. It sucked! It is so hot in the summer, I could not even play outside. Plus with walking in and out of A/C all day I had major asthma problems.
My brother lives in Henderson, the next city over from Vegas. He loves it, close to the lake and goes out on his boat every weekend. Henderson to me is more "family" enviroment.
Prices are good there. My brother bought his house brand new a few years ago. Huge house!
I know the house next to him rents for about 1400. Which is amazing. Four bedrooms and a pool! You can't even get an apartment for that where I live now.
If you have lived in Phoenix maybe the heat will not be so bad for you.
Good luck!

My brother-in-law & sister-in-law just moved from there a couple of years ago. We are frequent visitors out there - at least once a year. They loved it out there. The main reason they moved is that they had a baby & wanted to live closer to family. All the reasons they moved to Vegas were no longer in effect when the baby came along.

Yes, it did get very hot there in the summers, as they would describe foam on door handles of stores so you don't fry your hands.

Cost of living is high...but we live in the Midwest so everywhere else seems high to us.

Vacationing there we have went to the mountains on Christmas Day to sled...there are tons of things to do outside of the strip. Even though that's my favorite spot.

Beyond that I'm sunk...I can tell you where to get a good buffet, where to see Susan Lucci on a Sunday afternoon (we saw her at the Wynn), where to shop for electronics (conventions), and a great Columbian restaurant.

Good luck on your decision. It seems like the housing boom has slowed down out there some. It was ridiculous for a while with prices skyrocketing every day.

The schools used to be really bad in las vegas when they were growing so fast. How are they now? They couldn't keep up with the growth of the schools. They had big billboards up trying to find teachers. They could build the schools fast enough.

I find a week in las vegas I am ready to come home. Too money oriented on the strip anyway. I wouldn't want to live around gambling. I can imagine using the joker poker machines everytime I went into the 7-11. I guess I would just make a rule not to use it. Not good for anyone who is prone to being addicted or compulsive about anything.

What happens in Vegas stays in vegas. But what happens if you live there? LOL.
