Creeped out major, kind of a worry

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive August 2005: Creeped out major, kind of a worry
By Missmudd on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 10:06 pm:

I just received this msg from an ebay member:

Dear "insert my user name here" , Why don't you have anything available for sale? What, spend too much time playing "suzy homemaker" and canning food for the fair? Or were you too busy caring for that lazy hubby of yours with his so called "medical condition"? Well, Ive got to run but give my love to all the kids, you and that non-artistic husband of yours.Type to you again soon

Now probably this is somebody I know and I have emailed them to ask if this is them, but if it isnt, YIKES! This person either knows me or knows way to much ABOUT me and my family... I cant find anything about them from ebay, I have looked at what they have purchased recently and it is a bunch of coins, if it is the person most likely to be him, I didnt know he collected them. So I am really freaked out.

By Agreen on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 10:10 pm:

that is creepy! it has to be someone who knows you!

By Colette on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 10:18 pm:

I'd clear all personal info about me on every website I visit, change my user name and put this person on my blocked sender list.

By Pamt on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 10:46 pm:

Ditto Colette. Very creepy indeed.

By Emily7 on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 11:01 pm:

Other than the artistic husband with a so called medical problem you give most of what the e-mail says on here. In your profile you say you have 4 kids & list their names & ages, you list that you can food & that you ebayed a long time ago. I am in no way saying the person that emailed you got your info from this site, so please don't get me wrong. I guess I am just in a round about way agreeing with Colette.
I would be freaked out to, because it is what I would call a very confrontational e-mail.

By Anonymous on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 11:29 pm:

OH crud, it wasnt who I thought it was, clearing info as we speak, cripes.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Friday, August 12, 2005 - 12:04 am:

How do you know it is an EBAY member???? And if it is an EBAY member you need to contact EBAY. Because that would completely be against the rules.. To me it sounds personal. I mean why would they come here to look up info and then go an track you down at EBAY to email you. The person has to have a way to obtain the personal info and a reason to be nasty towards you to boot. And to address you by DEAR.

Anyone else get an off the wall email? Because I can't see someone coming here and just picking one of us to mess with. That would mean surfing through all of our profiles to find out personal information and then picking JUST ONE. I don't see it. And there are plenty of post about EBAY on here to figure out the names of others that buy/sell there to mess with.

I still say this is personal. Might even want to contact you ISP and send them the email.. ISP's are traceable. Every single one of us have a number that is our personal account. Meaning you send an email and that number is attached, you surf a site and that number is attached. And when you go through Ebay you have to register so the person should be able to be traced. And you need to start a trail so that if they contact you again there is a record of it.

It is in my email inbox on my ebay account. My user name there is the same as here. I dont know if I should respond through ebay and ask them to identify themselves or if I should just report it to ebay as a unsolicited email. The only person I can think of now is my db, but I dont know why he would have gone through ebay instead of just emailing me. He and I do not talk on a reg basis so it would not be totally out of the question that he was surfing ebay and looked me up, he would have had most if not all of the above info from my dm. I still think it is most likely somebody I know but it is not a nice tone and without a signer... The member has been one for almost 5 years so it isnt a new id. I just dont know who the heck it is and it is making me crazy. I did call my mom and she hasnt seen db for a few hours so I will probably call again tomorrow and see if it was him.

By Karen~moderator on Friday, August 12, 2005 - 07:21 am:

Report it to eBay!!!

By Dandjmom on Friday, August 12, 2005 - 07:22 am:

I think it may be someone you know, but why the tone? I would take Bobbie's advice and contact ebay and my ISP and see if I could find out who this person is, I wouldn't be able to rest until I found out for sure.

By Mrsheidi on Friday, August 12, 2005 - 08:31 am:

I agree, and you might want to take off your last name off this profile if you can? So sorry! That IS creepy!

By Bellajoe on Friday, August 12, 2005 - 09:48 am:

That is exactly why i don't give anyone here my email address. It is not anything against any of you, it is because of the creeps that search the web. I also don't give out my last name and give very general info on where i live.

I would only put very general info anywhere on the web.

I would contact ebay if i were you.

By Nanaoie on Friday, August 12, 2005 - 10:25 am:

You have to really be careful on the net.I use to be so open and posted often on a few websites,NO MORE.Someone started going to these websites and posting as me.Even worse, they posted personal info that anyone can find on a google search.I have started deleating everything I can.Don;t post personal info ANYWHERE!Momsview is great, but, they even have copied my posts from here.Be careful and report to ebay NOW.

By Reds9298 on Friday, August 12, 2005 - 12:35 pm:

I'm even a little weird about posting pictures of my dd. I've gotten a little more lenient recently JUST on this site, but that's the major reason we do not have a family web page. Too many weirdos in the world.
I'm sorry you're experiencing this! I would be scared and worried, too. I would definitely contact Ebay and erase everything in profiles.

By Anonymous on Friday, August 12, 2005 - 12:43 pm:

It wasnt my brother, I have contacted feona asking if the first post could be changed to anon. I will be opening a new momsview account. I hate having to change my ebay account since I have a great feedback score. I have contacted ebay too and did not contact the member directly. We will see what ebay has to say. I am considering printing out the email and bringing it to the cops just to log it. They may think I am a looney but....

By Bea on Friday, August 12, 2005 - 12:55 pm:

I'd do that. Most police forces have some computer expertise today. I would think that this is much like stalking. They may be able to help. If you could reply and let this creep know that you have turned him in, it might scare him off. It might be a kid just trying to push your buttons.

By Anonymous on Friday, August 12, 2005 - 12:59 pm:

Well I think I figured out who it is, it took me thinking about him buying coins. I think it is probably my bil. If it is, he and I are going to have a definate "discussion" regarding what is appropriate or not.

By Amy~moderator on Friday, August 12, 2005 - 01:27 pm:

Wow, what a mess! You must have been totally freaked out. I hope you get this worked out with your bil quickly.

By Karen~moderator on Friday, August 12, 2005 - 02:04 pm:

Once a post is made, it can't be changed to *Anon* - sorry.

By Missmudd on Friday, August 12, 2005 - 05:15 pm:

Well it was my turkey of a bil, sheesh, so I am relieved, yelled at him. Whew

By Jann on Friday, August 12, 2005 - 06:20 pm:

What in the world was he thinking???!!!

By Paulas on Friday, August 12, 2005 - 06:54 pm:

Well I'm glad it was him. Still, not a great thing to do but at least it was someone you know rather than someone snooping around for information on you.

By Emily7 on Friday, August 12, 2005 - 07:53 pm:

What a sick sense of humor the jerk must have!

By Mrsheidi on Friday, August 12, 2005 - 08:04 pm:

How did he react? Was he surprised that you figured it out? I would be really angry!! He *seriously* needs to find something better to do with his time.

By Missmudd on Saturday, August 13, 2005 - 12:50 am:

Well he is a smart a**, but actually has a kind heart, he didnt think it through long enough in his head to get to the point where I might have been freaked. He did show me his ebay account about a year ago and assumed that I would have figured it out who he was because I saw his ebay name way back then. So he is a bone head but really not a malicious one. And just so you all know his ebay name is not an easy one to remember, just a bunch of letters and digits. So I will still talk to him at christmas ;)

By Bobbie~moderatr on Saturday, August 13, 2005 - 02:23 am:

Well, I think he sounds like a lot of other men out there.

Here is the thing, things like this do freak people out. For those of you that are concerned you are able to edit your own profiles (Edit Profile is in the menu on the left), remove all things that point to who you really are. Your public email address, your full name etc. Any info you want included make it general info. (age of children not names. Do not post anything that will link back to your real world, etc.) That makes it so no one will be able to contact you off the list, on the list we can prevent improper contact off the list we can not. You are personally responsible for what is in your profile. I think that we all know this is not a case of someone coming in here and accessing a profile it is possible.

By Karen~moderator on Saturday, August 13, 2005 - 09:37 am:

Ditto Bobbie, and it's a lesson to be learned, in general, since I'm sure *most* of us belong to at least one other board. I put minimal information at best in my profile on other boards, if any at all. Momsview is the only board where I have a lot of info in my profile. I guess I have that false sense of security because of the type of board it is, but I haven't had any problems (crossing fingers and toes! LOL).
