Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive August 2005: Surgery in the A.M....
By Kernkate on Monday, August 8, 2005 - 11:32 pm:

Well all, things didn't go as I had hoped at the orthopedic Doctor today:( My fracture in my wrist is very bad and it will have to have a plate put in. I have to be at the hospital at 6:30 and surgery at 7:30.
I was trying to get to bed early, but just to nervous. I will post hopefully tomorrow.

By Brandy on Monday, August 8, 2005 - 11:35 pm:

not fun = ( ...i'll be saying a prayer for a quick recovery for you = )

By Pamt on Tuesday, August 9, 2005 - 12:02 am:

Missed it last night as well, I suspected it would go this way. It will heal MUCH faster with the plate. I know having the surgery seems like an awful thing, and I am not trying to minimize it, but your wrist will heal quicker, you will get back to you normal routine faster and feel better faster with the surgery, after your recovery period. Good luck, Kathy!

By Jann on Tuesday, August 9, 2005 - 08:38 am:

I hope all goes well. DON'T try to be a hero regarding the meds, they are there for a reason!

By Dawnk777 on Tuesday, August 9, 2005 - 08:47 am:

Awww, I'm sorry Kathy. Guess when you do something, you do it well! LOL! Good luck with surgery!

Just got home from the hospital. All went well, just sore and very tired. DS just went to get my meds filled. Doc gave me vicodin and an antibiotic, and for all you mother hens, LOL I promise to take my meds:)
I am headed for a nap.

By Annie2 on Tuesday, August 9, 2005 - 07:38 pm:

Glad everything went smoothly. Hope you're feeling better very soon. How long do you need to wear the cast?

By Kernkate on Tuesday, August 9, 2005 - 10:46 pm:

Thanks to all of you, and {{{Great Big Hugs)))) for all the support!!! Annie it's just a very thin, thin cast with an ace bandage over it, with a sling, it will be on for 2 weeks then I will go in to a zip wrist brace.

By Kernkate on Tuesday, August 9, 2005 - 10:50 pm:

Dawn, just reread the post, why do anything 1/2 way go all the way...LOL And I did, and wish I didn't do it at all.:(

By Karen~moderator on Wednesday, August 10, 2005 - 07:32 am:

Glad to hear you are home and everything is OK. Sounds like the cast Jen had when she had hand surgery, ditto the 2 weeks things. Very similar. Did he tell you to ice and elevate it as well? I hope it doesn't hurt too much now!!! {{{{{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}}}}

By Rayanne on Wednesday, August 10, 2005 - 08:13 am:

I am glad that everything is ok now. {{{{{HUGS}}}}}

By Kernkate on Wednesday, August 10, 2005 - 08:23 am:

Yep Karen, with the ice and elevate. I really thought the pain would be much worse today, but really nothing I can't stand, thank god!
Just aggravating to only have the use of one hand, it really does limit alot of activities. Not to easy to fold clothes,or do dishes with one hand.
But DH, and kids have been a great help. Just not use to having to rely on others for such simple task. I go back to the Dr. on the 23rd and take it from there.
Thanks again for all the kind words!:)

By Amecmom on Wednesday, August 10, 2005 - 08:32 am:

Kathy, don't fold clothes or do dishes. For a few weeks, just let the others do the work. The more you rest and take care of it, the better and faster it will heal. This is the critical time. You don't want to end up having pain and issues down the road because you were impatient to do housework ... It's hard, I know, but worth it!
Ame

By Karen~moderator on Wednesday, August 10, 2005 - 08:44 am:

Ditto Ame! With ANY surgery for a broken bone or disk or physical injury, you need to let it heal and the post-op time is the critical healing time. Your family can pick up the slack for a few weeks!!!!

By Kernkate on Wednesday, August 10, 2005 - 08:48 am:

I know, but being a mom you know how hard it is!:)

By Amecmom on Wednesday, August 10, 2005 - 01:22 pm:

I know, Kathy :). I broke my thumb two weeks after my son was born. New mommy, smushed thumb not a good combination. I couldn't really change diapers or dress him. I felt pretty useless and very sad. I actually began to resent the people who were helping me because I was jealous that they could do for my baby and I couldn't :(. I got over it and you will, too.
Just try and catch up on some rest or reading.
Ame

By Bea on Wednesday, August 10, 2005 - 03:32 pm:

Do what the doctor tells you GIRL!!!! This is the Redheaded Rambo talking. Take care of that wrist and let it heal correctly. Or I'll give you a TIME OUT ;o)

By Kernkate on Wednesday, August 10, 2005 - 03:43 pm:

LOL Bea!!! I just bagged the arm and got a nice shower, it felt so good:) Its paining alittle but nothing major. Please Mrs. Rambo no time out, I am going to do my own time out right now:)

By Yjja123 on Wednesday, August 10, 2005 - 04:58 pm:

(((hugs))) I hope you are feeling better soon!

By Ginny~moderator on Wednesday, August 10, 2005 - 05:21 pm:

Kate, one thing to remember is that many pain medications, especially those containing any codeine or other opiate, can be constipating. So either take some fiber capsules or tablets with any pain med, or stock up on prunes (I realized recently that they don't call them prunes anymore - they are now "dried plums".).
