I can't believe I have finally done it. This is something I have wanted for so long, but due to health problems, I've had to keep delaying.

I had dd when I was barely 17. She was just a few weeks old when I entered college. I got my Associate's degree in a field that I knew I could get a job in quickly so I could care for her.

I have always wanted to be an elementary ed teacher. For the last year, I have substituted at our primary school which goes through grade 4. I also work as the Homeless Coordinator. I deal with around 25 children on a one on one basis a couple of times a week, doing things dependent on each child's individual needs. These are all children who are not in a "typical" family home. One of my students lives with her aunt because her mother died, and her father is, well, who knows. I also have children who live in a home with two or three other families.

Anyhow, I still love what I do, and it has just made my dream that much more real. Also, the principal of the school kept pushing that I should get my degree because she thinks I am very good with the children.

So finally, I have gotten all of my financial aid straightened out, and am officially enrolled in four classes this semester. Classes start Aug. 28.

I am taking distance learning classes, where a lot will be done over the internet and with video lectures. I am still having some problems with my health, and there are days I just wouldn't be able to go to class, so this is the best option for me.

I am taking a year's worth of classes through the community college and then will transfer to a four year college as a Junior to work towards my Master's Degree in Elem. Ed.

This will all take about 4 years, probably, but after three, I will have the option of just becoming certified or taking the final year and receiving my Master's Degree.

I'm only 26, so my goal is getting my degree somewhere during the year I turn 30. And I fully expect my health to cooperate so I can make this happen!

Well, just had to share. I hope I'll be able to turn to you guys for encouragement, especially during this first semester!

Congrats!

I teach K-2 and I love it. It's so nice to be in a career that I love as well as have the same days off as my children.

Good on ya for taking this on!
