They denied me(dog related)

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive July 2005: They denied me(dog related)
By Jackie on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 06:40 pm:

They denied me from adopting a dog from the Golden Rescue group. I cant believe it...They were here for an hr on Saturday(there was a man in training, and another lady). They think we have too much going on here to take on another large dog. She made a comment on our back yard. We have a chain link fence, and no dog has ever escaped or gotten hurt in our yard. The man said there was jagged parts to the yard. We have taken care of dogs for 10 yrs through a petsitting service. I have customers who ONLY request me. I treat each and every dog who comes through my house like royality. It makes me mad to think that these people think I dont have the capabilities for taking care of another dog.
She said the problem isnt within the family and the kids. That we just have too much going on with the kids, and other dogs to take on another large dog. UGH...makes me mad.

I'm so sorry. :-( Are you going to try to get another dog from somewhere else? {{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}

By Amecmom on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 07:00 pm:

I think some of these people just need to get over themselves! They want homes for animals, yet a good home presents itself and they turn you away!

These agencies really crack me up. They almost didn't give us our dog because our vet didn't fax over the records for our cats. Can you imagine?

Did you pay a fee to be considered?

Sorry they are sooo picky!

Ame

Wow! I can't believe they denied you!
We had to have people come evaluate us the last time we adopted a dog, and they commented on the amount of poop in our yard. (which was very little). They let us adopt, but they made me feel like I was adopting a child!
I agree with Ame, they want these animals to have good homes, but they turn you away.
Sorry you got denied, that stinks!

By Pamt on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 07:15 pm:

Ditto everyone else. That stinks! I could see if they said no because you didn't have a fence or something, but who are they to decide you have "too much going on." Ugh!! I'd be ticked too. Well, you can always go through the Humane Society or something to get a new dog. (((Jackie)))

I am sorry Jackie! I know first hand that this happens way too often. I have volunteered for the humane society for years before I moved here. When we moved here we wanted another dog for a companion to our chow mix. They refused us because they said "no large dogs for a house with small kids". We ended up adopting a lab mix from a rescue center (that takes the animals the humane society cannot adopt). Ridiculous! I had letters of recommendation, a huge back yard fenced, etc--nope they simply would not budge. It is nice they care but not that they go so far to the extreme that adoptable animals are put to sleep instead of being given homes!
(((hugs)))
I hope you find another dog!
Good luck!
Yvonne

{{{Jackie}}} So sorry!

By Dawnk777 on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 10:27 pm:

On the dog board I go to, other people complain about the same thing! They have dogs and have successfully taken care of them for years, and yet a rescue organization will deny them a dog! I don't get it, either.

Oh Jackie, I'm so sorry. Add me to the I don't get it list :(

By Cocoabutter on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - 02:39 pm:

I have a neighbor whose dog was put down b/c he bit a girl in the face and she had to have 8 stitches. (That dog was never socialized properly and they knew it had the potential to be agressive!) And you know what- they just got another dog from a rescue shelter!

I called animal control and they said that there is nothing they can do unless a judge had ordered that they not have any more dogs.

I agree- some dogs could have had great homes but end up being put to sleep b/c requirements are too strict. Then, someone like my neighbor can go and pick up a dog with no problem.

By Amecmom on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - 04:40 pm:

Lisa, we had a dog that we had to put down because of aggression. We did everything we could - even took him to an animal behaviorist. The behaviorist said we could never trust him around our children and recommended putting him down. He said that would be kinder than putting him in a no kill shelter for the rest of his life (prison for a dog who was used to sleeping inside among people).
We were fortunate that we caught the problem before he could bite somebody.
I'll tell you honestly that I will never adopt another shelter dog ( we got this one as a 6 week old puppy).
I'll go to a reputable breeder and make sure the parents and grandparents of the dog are known and not aggressive. I won't take a chance with my family again.

Who are they to tell you that you have too much going on to get another dog? Sorry, but shouldn't that be your decision?

You have to go through more to get a dog nowadays than to become a foster parent. Unbelievable.

And they wonder why people just go through a breeder or the petshop? Hmmmm....I wonder!!!

By Cocoabutter on Thursday, July 28, 2005 - 05:50 pm:

Ame, I apologize. I didn't intend to say that no one who has a dog that has been put down for agression should ever own one again. I am sorry you had to go through that.

But, you did the responsible thing- you were PROactive rather than REactive. You recognized that your dog had the potential to be dangerous, and you took preemptive measures to assure that no one got hurt.

That was not the case with my neighbor. (I have known them personally, though we don't socialize much anymore.) They were simply irresponsible. Their dog had snapped at a couple of neighbor girls walking past their house and was overly agressive with other passersby, barking and growling, etc. They found out that red heelers are very territorial dogs, like herding dogs, and that he was being over protective of his yard. That would be a clue to keep a watchful eye on him and give him some extra training, but that never happened. (It might also be a clue that living in the city is not the best place for him without lots of excercize.) He was never licensed, neutered, or vaccinated, either.

But, in the year since that first incident, he had done well to stay within his fenced in yard and yap away to his hearts content. Yes, the barking was annoying, and the police were called on complaints of the barking, but it was just another sign that the dog was untrained.

The girl that he bit got too close to his face. The dad wasn't upset, but he felt calling animal control was the right thing to do. Due to the history of this dog, animal control made the decision to have him put down.
