Florida Moms - a weather questionn

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive July 2005: Florida Moms - a weather questionn
By Karen~moderator on Wednesday, July 6, 2005 - 06:24 pm:

What are they saying about DENNIS on your local weather reports??? I know it's early to predict, but I am freaking out. We are supposed to fly to Fort Myers Saturday, arriving around 3:30 in the afternoon; my sister will be arriving around 5:00 and we are driving to Sanibel Island.

It is questionable as to whether or not our trip will be refundable if we can't go. I don't know if we should go ahead and cancel or what. I am so anxious and disappointed.

And *if* DENNIS doesn't hit FL, it could possibly hit LA, and from what we are hearing here, it will be at least a Cat 3 when it makes landfall and I have my house to worry about here - AND my dog....... the kids said they plan to go to their Dad's in MS since he bought a house there recently.

I don't know what to do!!!!!!!!!

By Yjja123 on Wednesday, July 6, 2005 - 06:43 pm:

I have been freaking out because yesterday they said it would hit the keys on Friday then work its way to south Florida (where I live). We are going to Key Largo Saturday for vacation. Hurricane Frances ruined our last Key Largo trip in September of last year.
I heard an hour ago that it may graze Key west (the outer cone of error). It is now not expected to go through South Florida at all.

So far it is exactly parallel to Ivan Karen. My Dad is charting it. They are expecting something between Friday and Monday I think! I don't know what to tell you!

The whole community is freaking out!

By Kim on Wednesday, July 6, 2005 - 07:14 pm:

We are trying to figure out our plan of action right now actually....don't know which way we are going to go yet.

By Dawnk777 on Wednesday, July 6, 2005 - 07:20 pm:

That's why I like living in WI, even if we have to bundle up for the 4th of July parade and fireworks! No hurricanes or tropical storms. I couldn't handle all that stress!

By Pamt on Wednesday, July 6, 2005 - 09:05 pm:

I know!! It is supposed to make landfall this weekend in Mobile and we were going to Mobile to spend the weekend with my parents. DH is heading out of town on a mission trip with the youth so the boys and I were looking forward to some R & R by my parents' pool. Even if it doesn't hit Mobile it is very possible that I would get stranded somewhere on the way home due to flooding or just have to drive through some really bad weather. It's really looking like we'll be at home. :( I'd worry about my house and dog too.

This is an awfully early ACTIVE hurricane season it seems. I hope not a taste of what's to come in August and September.

By Karen~moderator on Thursday, July 7, 2005 - 06:48 am:

Well, I know this sounds selfish and thoughtless, but at least I'm not the only one whose plans are being ruined! Now, may I have some cheese with my WHINE???? LOL

I didn't realize so many of us had plans in the path of this storm!

By Yjja123 on Thursday, July 7, 2005 - 01:59 pm:

I could cry. They are evacuating the keys. How is it possible to have 2 vacations ruined by hurricanes? We will likely be unable to go to Key Largo. Hurricane Frances ruined our last Key Largo trip in September of last year. We waiting almost a year to reschedule (as we had to wait until hubby had vacation time). I am sorry--I just needed to vent. We needed this vacation so bad!

By Karen~moderator on Thursday, July 7, 2005 - 02:24 pm:

Yvonne, I can relate, 100%!!! I have been looking forward to this vacation SO much, we *really* needed it too, this has been a horrible year. I am so jumpy and short tempered today, I feel like crying too.

I'm sooooo sorry that your vacation is being ruined again! My sister (near Tampa) had a friend who had scheduled a trip to Disney & then Francis happened! They rescheduled a few weeks later & that was the weekend that Jeane hit! What are the odds! Of course what are the odds of 4 getting the state in one season?

In Orlando watching the "Cone of Error" creap closer & closer!! UGH!!!!

By Bellajoe on Thursday, July 7, 2005 - 04:53 pm:

I'm so sorry for all of you whose vacations will be, might be, or has been ruined. I know how much i look forward to vacation, and count down the days.

Next time make plans to come up north! There's no ocean or breathtaking beaches (that I have seen) but there are no hurricanes either :)

By Karen~moderator on Thursday, July 7, 2005 - 05:08 pm:

DH is convinced we are GOING. Geesh! Not that I don't want to, but he is going by the Strike Probabilities, which I see have INCREASED since he last looked. UGH!!!!!!

By Crystal915 on Thursday, July 7, 2005 - 11:02 pm:

Karen, I just talked to my grandmom in West Palm, and she doesn't think it's headed for that side of FL, but Nate's grandparents are in Punta Gorda, and bracing for a hit. I'm thinking the west coast of FL is not some place you want to go right now! Then again, it might be worse in New Orleans, I guess it's anyone's bet.

By Karen~moderator on Friday, July 8, 2005 - 07:38 am:

Well, the 5-day cone has shifted a bit west now, Crystal. We called Delta last night and so far, they say we can get to Fort Myers, however, by tonight, that may be a different story. And the other side of that is that New Orleans is now in the cone. So I can worry about this storm whether I am home or on vacation! LOL

By Crystal915 on Friday, July 8, 2005 - 11:53 am:

I hope everyone stays safe, I hate hurricane season!

By Pamt on Friday, July 8, 2005 - 02:45 pm:

There's no room at the inn in Baton Rouge. Since we are on the outside western edge of the projected path we will get A LOT of evacuees from New Orleans, MS, AL, and FL. As of today every hotel room in the city is booked. As it stands now, we'll probably get some rough weather at the very least unless Dennis loses a lot of steam or veers farther east. DH left today for Houston, so the boys and I are preparing to hunker down. My neighbor's DH is out of town too, so we may end up helping each other out. I know lots of people who's vacation or weekend plans have now been radically changed. Ugh! We're going to load up on movies and hoping that we have the electricity to watch them.

By Karen~moderator on Friday, July 8, 2005 - 02:47 pm:

Good luck Pam! We are still waiting to see if we can continue with our vacation plans. Jen is going with her b/f's family to northern MS, Jeff will go to Hammond if he has to leave. We are under voluntary evacuation here as it stands now.

Be safe!

By Kim on Friday, July 8, 2005 - 02:52 pm:

We almost did not get rooms in Jacksonville....I am sure people from the keys came upwards also. I don't caer where we go. I just know I am not staying here. I have to leave my dog behind and that is killing me. She is like my kids! ANyone heard from Annie2?

By Pamt on Friday, July 8, 2005 - 05:02 pm:

Kim, if you need a place to stay you and your kids are welcome here....really. Let me know if things get crazy and you can't find a safe place to stay and I'll email my phone number. Same for you too, Annie!

By Yjja123 on Friday, July 8, 2005 - 05:30 pm:

Key Largo has evacuated all tourists. We are definitely not going there this weekend. Hopefully it will not hit or flood the area so we can try to salvage our vacation on Monday.
We may get winds/tropical storms here in south florida so it is probably good that we are staying home for the time being.
Yvonne

By Kim on Friday, July 8, 2005 - 05:45 pm:

Yvonne, where are you again? Sorry, I can never remember!

Thanks Pam!!!!! My Mom finally found a hotel with two rooms.....funny thing is that its right down the street from my boss' hotel! LOL, she and my Mom are friends and I think we are going to have a party...maybe some drinks by the pool to relax while the kids swim swim swim and wear their butts out. They are so nerved up! SOOOO many people from this are are going to Jacksonville also.

Pam, your offer means a lot to me! That is very generous of you! It would be awesome to meet another person from the board but not under the greatest circumstances!

I think Annie was going out of town past this weekend. I truly hope her home is shut up snug and tight or that they can get home to board up.

Ladies not involved with the storm, I am sorry we are taking up so much space on this! It really helps relieve the tension to be able to tell someone what is going on and how I feel!

By Tink on Friday, July 8, 2005 - 06:49 pm:

Please, don't think another thought of taking up too much space! We all worry about each other when something like this is going on and I check in here (knowing it's about the evacuations) everytime I'm on Momsview, just to make sure you are all alright. I'm thinking of all of you and keeping you in my prayers. {{{All of you}}}

By Imamommyx4 on Friday, July 8, 2005 - 06:55 pm:

Ladies--it isn't looking good.

But, whatever you do decide or can do, I'll keep you in my prayers. And just be safe.

By Emily7 on Friday, July 8, 2005 - 07:10 pm:

Ditto Cori & Debbie.

By Kernkate on Saturday, July 9, 2005 - 12:54 am:

Kim, do not worry about taking up to much space! We are all here for you.
All of you in Dennis' path are in my thoughts and prayers!.
Here in NE PA we just have to worry about snow in the winter. Nothing like you all are going through.
Keep us updated.
{{{Big Hugs to all}}}
