Quality kids furniture?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive June 2005: Quality kids furniture?
By Deam on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 09:13 pm:

I was wondering if anyone knew of any good quality kids furniture stores. I live in Queens in N.Y. My son is 8 years old, so I would like to buy something durable. Thanks.

Maybe Ikea?

By Yjja123 on Monday, June 27, 2005 - 10:40 pm:

Ikea is not quality! I know of 3 people who have bought their furniture from Ikea and it has fallen apart.
Are there any unfinished wood stores there? In upstate NY there is a great store called adirondeck furniture. The pieces there are solid wood and made to last.
I am a firm believer in solid wood only furniture. You pay more but it can last forever.
Good luck!

I have lots of IKEA furniture, and I've had great luck with it. Two of my girls sleep in their beds - a high loft and a high bed, and I love them.
Two of my other girls sleep in bunk beds from Sears, and they've been good, too.

We love Ikea kid's furniture too. Right now we have their day bed style captains beds and they have held up tremendously well. My nursery furniture that we bought at the Baby's room has also held up really good, but the Ikea stuff was at least half the price! My philosophy was, kids abuse furniture. I remember decorating my bed with a ton of stickers, writing my name on it with markers, etc. when I was little. I figured if I didn't spend a fortune on my kids beds, I wouldn't be that upset when they decided to make them prettier themselves!

I don't care too much for Ikea either, but JMO. I'm not saying I wouldn't buy it for a kid though, because I agree with Cheerio that you never know what a kid is going to do with it, but I wouldn't buy their regular furnishings for myself.

Ethan Allens is good furniture. I bet it is 4 or five times more expensive than ikea though...

Ikea probably has a whole room system.

Solid wood is the best but kids destroy stuff so....

By Yjja123 on Tuesday, June 28, 2005 - 01:28 pm:

Just wondering...how do kids destroy furniture? My kids have nice (solid wood mission beds and antique desks and side tables) furniture and have never done anything to it. They know that furniture is not a toy. All the furniture in our house is solid wood, nothing has happened to it. We have a lot of antique furniture so I guess I am lucky that no one has damaged it.
I think that an 8 year old will take take of new furniture.

Thanks for all of the great feedback! I have to agree that IKEA isn't really good quality. My son doesn't destroy furniture so it would be ok if I went a little more expensive. I'm re-doing his room, only once, so I want it to last. I forgot about Ethan Allen. The Adirondack one sounds good too. Thanks so much!

My son is not destructive, but Lordy there's been plenty of his buddies who have been. Stickers on the wallpaper, carving into wood, ripping off wallpaper, breaking chair legs off chairs, drawing on anything, sticking gum in the carpet or an old popscicles under the bed or spilling all kinds of things, breaking anything breakable, running through closed screen doors, slamming things like flashlights on the ground to see how easy they breaks, puncturing bean bag chairs, taking keys of a keyboard, breaking off my CD rom drive (when they hit the open button with their knee and then falling on the open drawer), throwing heavy things down the stairs and causing holes in the door at the bottom of the stairs, breaking sprinklers, breaking windows by intentionally throwing toys at it, busting slip n slides, and the list goes on. Other parents say they like having my son over bec he's not destructive. I would never bring any quality furniture into my home at this time (even though I've weeded out the most destructive kids).

Cargo makes good kid furniture.

Mommmie...
I would freak out if someone caused that kind of damage to my house! WOW! Did the parents pay for the damage?
Deam...
My mom suggested you do an online search for wood furniture. There are a lot of stores in upstate NY that make their own furniture. Good Luck!
I bought oak chairs and a china cabinet from an ebay dealer. Even with the cost of shipping it was a great deal for solid wood. If you want the name of the seller let me know.

Yjja - no, no payment. These things have happened over the last 5-6 years involving numerous boys. I was talking to a neighbor mom the other night, who has kids like mine, who are not destructive and she was showing me the latest destruction that another kid had just done to her property (we're not the only target). She doesn't understand it either - the level of destructiveness caused by many kids these days.

My son's first real playdate was when he was 5 and the other boy 6 and they invited my son over. The dad is head of a big hosptial in town and they keep a very formal house - formal place settings on the table at all times, for instance. When I picked up my son the mom said he was the first playdate guest who will be invited back because he didn't destroy anything while he was there. She said the last guest, the son of a doctor, ripped the wood slats off their fence, among other things. Breaking things just to be breaking things. Over time I learned it's so common. You tell the parents and they think it's not the big a deal, that boys will be boys.

I would also freak out, if kids caused that kind of damage at my house! Sheesh!
