Tom Cruise Proposed to Katie Holmes

By Rayanne on Friday, June 17, 2005 - 09:22 am:

I personally think that it's sweet.

By Pamt on Friday, June 17, 2005 - 09:40 am:

BARF!! If they even make it to the altar, I give them less than 5 years. What a big, expensive, and ultimately emotionally devastating publicity stunt.

By Janet on Friday, June 17, 2005 - 10:02 am:

I didn't even know he liked her...

By Vicki on Friday, June 17, 2005 - 10:13 am:

What ever makes them happy!! I personally thought that him and Nicole would go the distance...shows what I know. LOL

By Karen~moderator on Friday, June 17, 2005 - 10:19 am:

I have to agree with Pamt......and I was just reading something yesterday about how a *scientology coach* has been following Katie Holmes everywhere, basically to influence her decisions on foods and other things. Sounds like a case of control - he will remake her into his *perfect woman*. I ditto Pam on this one.

By Reds9298 on Friday, June 17, 2005 - 12:04 pm:

Like every other Hollywood couple/wedding...it'll last 2 years, he'll find a cuter piece of tail, and they'll move on. These celebrities are insulting to the word 'marriage' IMO....

By Feonad on Friday, June 17, 2005 - 12:18 pm:

She grew up wishing to marry Tom. Well that says it all.

By Marcia on Friday, June 17, 2005 - 12:54 pm:

Geez, I grew up wanting to marry him, too, but I here I sit just reading about it. LOL

By Crystal915 on Friday, June 17, 2005 - 02:09 pm:

Creepy. He's my parents' age, and she's mine. I like my parents and their friends, but I can't imagine marrying someone that much older than me.

By Unschoolmom on Friday, June 17, 2005 - 02:14 pm:

I echo the 'creepy' sentiment. Not only because she's so young but she's supposedly had a crush on him forever. Is he taking advantage of that? Does she really know him beyond the fact that he's Tom Cruise.

And the Scientology thing. That's always extra creepy. :)

By Dawnk777 on Friday, June 17, 2005 - 02:57 pm:

Tom Cruise 7-3-62 (43)
Katie Holmes 12-18-78 (27)

Ewwww. So, they are 16 years apart in age. He is old enough to be her father, albeit a young one! I'm old enough to be her mother. I was a freshman in college in December of 1978. Can we say gold-digging?

By Janet on Friday, June 17, 2005 - 03:15 pm:

Well, what man wouldn't love to have his ego stoked by someone telling him they grew up with a poster on their wall, wanting to marry him? I used to want to marry Chekov from "Star Trek!" LOL Oh well, it's Hollywood. Whaddya expect?

By Crystal915 on Friday, June 17, 2005 - 03:35 pm:

I thought she was in her early 20s. Either way, yuck... it does seem like he's taking advantage of a childhood crush. And her converting to Scientology, it seems to go against everything that she was, her Christian upbringing in a close knit family.

By Heaventree on Friday, June 17, 2005 - 03:39 pm:

Barf! Was my first reaction as well. Just wait until they break-up and the media shows all those clips of Tom jumping up and down on Oprah's sofa and Katie talking about how happy she is.

Sorry to be so cynical, but I just don't buy it and Tom Cruise creeps me out.

By Bellajoe on Friday, June 17, 2005 - 06:36 pm:

I used to like Tom Cruise. But after his looking like someone high on acid or somthing on the Oprah show, he just turns me off!

The fact that she had posters of him in her room and grew up wanting to marry Tom Cruise is just creepy. I think she likes the image of "TOM CRUISE" I doubt she knows him that well.

The scientology thing is weird and the fact that a scientologist may be following her around influencing her every move is just wrong.

By Emily7 on Friday, June 17, 2005 - 06:53 pm:

I didn't see Oprah, but watching him on Leno was horrible.

By Juli4 on Friday, June 17, 2005 - 07:05 pm:

it all is weird. Just as soon as the gushing is over and they are through the honeymoon phase it will be over. happens all the time.

By Karen~moderator on Friday, June 17, 2005 - 07:27 pm:

I don't think the age difference is that weird, I am friends with several couples who have large age differences. But from what I can see, he has a hand in molding her into what he wants, and you don't even want my opinions about all these *celebrity* marriages! LOL

By Jelygu on Friday, June 17, 2005 - 08:39 pm:

I agree with the BARF sentinment. He has just been too weird about this...

By Laurazee on Saturday, June 18, 2005 - 12:21 am:

The big rumor is that Tom "interviewed" (or tried to) a series of actresses for a girlfriend/wife position. Some of the candidates were Jessica Alba, Kate Bosworth, and Jennifer Garner. Jennifer Garner told him to leave her alone - he was being creepy and she's with Ben. Jessica Alba apparently went to a meeting at his place, presumably for a movie, and was baffled when he yammered about everything under the sun but the movie. Allegedly, Lindsay Lohan (18! That really is too young!!) was considered but then rejected as being "too unstable".

But the Scientology thing is truly creepy. The high-ranking Scientology official following Katie around is bugging her handlers but they can't do anything about it. According to Tom's statements, the Scieno rep is there to protect his business investment "keep Katie on the path". Apparently Tom's been making anyone who wants to interview him take Scientology classes. He pulled a premiere of War of the Worlds from some German theatre because the staff didn't want to take Scientology classes (the Germans are nothing if not suspicious of cults!)

A while ago, Tom apparently fired his very capable and powerful publicist, Pat Kingsley, and had his Scientologist sister take over. Pat Kingsley is reknown in the business for what she does (good article here), and she kept him on a short leash for well over a decade. Anyway, I think that's part of the reason he's coming across as so looney. These publicists actually do a lot to keep their clients' images in check. Now Katie's dropped her own publicist for Tom's publi-sister. I look forward to more looniness.

And the other reason he's coming across so looney is beause I really do think he's lost it. I have no respect for Katie for going along with it, unless she really is that dimwitted and starstruck. I feel sorry for Nicole and the kids, especially given Tom's statements that "he's never loved anyone like this before." What a putz.

And yes, clearly I read too much gossip.

By Jtsmom on Saturday, June 18, 2005 - 09:53 am:

The age thing is not that "creepy" My husband is 16 yrs older than me and he is the love of my life and always will be.

By Jtsmom on Saturday, June 18, 2005 - 09:56 am:

I forgot to add... Tom Cruise is creepy though! No matter how old he is.

By Trina~moderator on Saturday, June 18, 2005 - 10:52 am:

LOL, Laurazee! My sentiments exactly...

What a putz.

By Nanaoie on Saturday, June 18, 2005 - 02:44 pm:

I watched a show last night were he really jumped on Brooke Shields,he said there is no reason she should use medication for post partum depression, she didn't need it.......When did he become a MD?He said all she needed was vitamins...........Yea right.....I have always enjoyed his movies but, this has done it.I saw him on Oprah,God love her, she looked at him like he had lost his mind.He acted like a fool.Thats my 2 cents worth.......LOL

By Unschoolmom on Saturday, June 18, 2005 - 03:17 pm:

Just watch...Next it will be nose jobs and chimpanzees. :)
There should be some kind of center to rehabilitate celebrities back to normalcy.

By Boxzgrl on Saturday, June 18, 2005 - 03:21 pm:

I see Tom Cruise as a looney man hitting mid-life crisis and in need for more of a young audience. He kinda creeps me out, almost in a way that I wouldn't want my child around him. I don't know why. The scientology stuff is a big joke in itself so adding Tom to the mix makes it more of a comedic attempt at spreading a "cult" across the world. The whole situation is just nasty.

I've always loved Katie Holmes. I think she's an incredibly actress, I love her "girl next door" beauty and her cute crooked smile. Her personality just shines in her interviews and she seemed so happy while engaged to Chris Klein. I think i've lost a little respect for her because of this whole incident. I really hope it's not a publicity stunt but I honestly think it is. Tom Cruise has always been very big on having a private life NOT involving the media and the rest of the world. So, it kinda makes you wonder why he's suddenly putting himself out there.

I hope Katie realizes she needs to run while she still has a chance. I also wonder what her family thinks about "converting to Scientology" because I believe she was raised in a very strict Catholic/Christian upbringing and has always shown strong morals.

By Kathym on Sunday, June 19, 2005 - 05:19 pm:

Who really cares? These folks lost touch with reality a long time ago and the creepy vibes coming off both of them are scary. I'll take my boring old life thank you!

By Dawnk777 on Sunday, June 19, 2005 - 10:01 pm:

Ditto, Kathy!
