Favorite Summertime Activities??

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive June 2005: Favorite Summertime Activities??
By Eve on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 09:12 am:

DD is out of preschool for the Summer. I've decided not to send her this Summer to any of their programs. I've taken her swimming a few times and our pool should open soon. We would like to take a camping trip. Also, we are planning on going up north to visit friends for a couple of weeks. I also plan on dragging DH off to one of our wonderful beaches!:)

What other fun Summertime activities do you enjoy with your kids?

By Debbie on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 09:29 am:

We love to go on bike rides and to the park. We also love to swim when it is hot.

We are planning to go to the zoo, the aquarium, and the children's museum sometime during the summer. My boys are also very into baseball, so we went to a few afternoon minor league baseball games last summer. I am sure we will do that again this year.

They just got out of school the middle of last week. So far, they have been hanging out in the backyard with the neighborhood kids. It has been hot, so they have been using the neighbor's slip and slide and having major water gun fights.

I am just planning some activities for the kids. Brett gets out of school on Thursday. We enjoy swimming and the kids even like to go under the hose, sprinkler in the back yard.
When its really hot we head to the movies. A/C is always nice!
We have planned a few day trips to Hershey Park and Dorney Park and Knoebels the kids like it there.
And of course a few weekends camping. They all love to camp.
I am sure we will have a fun filled summer, especially if the weather stays hot like it has been!

When my kids were little we did a lot of library activities. Ours has a summer reading program geared for all ages.

We have been out of school 2 weeks and have managed to have some type of appt almost everyday! lol argh (doctor, dermatologist, optometrist, hair cuts does this sound like summer FUN? :) )

We have been to the lake a couple of weekends where we fish, swim, water ski, wakeboard, tube and knee board and we will do that every weekend until September. We have been to Branson and stayed in a condo with the neighbor- took the kids to Silver Dollar City. They had a blast.

This week blake started private swimming lessons (2 days a week). He did AWESOME yesterday.

Had our first 4-H mtg last night. That was fun! Boys are picking projects to work on.

8th grade football started working out TODAY!! So 2 days a week for the rest of the summer Brandon has football (plus he'll go to a football camp).

Blake *may* start horseback riding lessons in July when he is done with swimming. He is hoping that works out. :)

Brad goes to a Sports camp in August.

Vacation Bible School is in July, church camp in July, niece and nephew come stay in July for a week, 4th of july weekend we have family out to the lake every yr, etc...

We always go to the library atleast 1x a week, we go to the aquatic ctr atleast 1x in the summer since they have water slides (it gets expensive for the 4 of us to go, so we mostly swim in the backyard or at the lake).

Bought a new kids crafts book so we plan to do a few crafts out of that book when we have time. We like crafts.

Going bowling this Thursday afternoon.

We also go to the cheap kids movies that the theatre has in the summer.

I LOVE SUMMER can ya tell?????!!!! lol I am always sad when school starts! :(

One of my favorite summer time activities is NOT having to crack the whip to get the kids up and off to school on time. :)

By Rayanne on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 01:13 pm:

Playing outside in the backyard in the sprinkler with Rylee:)

By Mommmie on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 04:04 pm:

We are going to see how many different public pools we can go to this summer. So far we've been to 4 different ones. Got a new one in mind for the next stop. This one has 2 slides and a lazy river, too. Should be fun times!

By Rayanne on Tuesday, June 14, 2005 - 04:08 pm:

That sounds like so much fun Mommie:)
I will have to remember that one for when Rylee gets older.

We like to bike ride, go to the zoo, and go to the pool and the park. I'd like to take the kids to a miniature golf course some time this summer with a trip to the ice cream place afterwards. oh and of course we will go to the beach.

Dylan's last day is Thursday! Let's see...he is starting Private swim lessons next week and that's about it. I'm sure we will go to Legoland and the Wild Animal Park about a million times. LOL

We will spend lots of time at the park and the beach. I'm sure we will also spend alot of time at home just playing out in the back yard with friends. We have a Water Park about 10 minutes from us and I think we will give that place a try when DS is done with his swim lessons.

Emily (13) and I have spent the last 2 days, planting stuff, since it finally cooled down a little. the other day, it was warm enough for swimming, but the threat of storms, kept us home. (hate to pay the money and then just get sent home!)

By Eve on Wednesday, June 15, 2005 - 08:17 am:

Some great ideas! Thanks! I keep forgetting about the library. It's right down the road from us too! I'll have to check out their Summer story times.

Mini golf! Oh DD will like that! Thank you! Sometimes, I just need some ideas! :)

Am I the only one that isn't planning on swim lessons for my child? I learned the Summer when I was 5 going to the pool everyday with my family.

By Kym on Wednesday, June 15, 2005 - 09:37 am:

We are doing swimming lessons for my 5 year old.
Math learning center for my "entering 7th grade" daughter so she's not totally behind.
Soccer camp for my 8 y/0
And "how to keep your shoes on, and get rid of the bottle" camp for my 1 y/o:)
Our community is great for activities for the kids. Our discount theater runs last years movies for FREE two days a week, our library has free interactive learning day, and the pool has discounted open swim, so we take advantage of these inside activities as often as possible in AZ.

A great idea my friends and I do, we swap kids, so one mom has a group one day a week, and we each get a day off! I do it w/ three moms who have similar age kids and it works great!

Our big vacation is a week at a beach house in Mexico, we can't wait!

By Debbie on Wednesday, June 15, 2005 - 10:21 am:

We are doing swim lessons for my youngest ds. We are hoping to move back to Texas next summer and we want to buy a house with a pool, so I want him to be a good swimmer before we do that. He is just getting confindent in the pool. He took lessons in the spring. My oldest is a good swimmer and he didn't want to take lessons, so I didn't sign him up.

By Conni on Wednesday, June 15, 2005 - 10:40 am:

Eve, my older boys learned from swimming with us. They are good swimmers and will do anything such as flips off the boards. They scare me. lol!

My youngest (5yo) is going to lessons because he doesnt want to listen to me in the pool. *blushing* We have an above ground pool in the backyard. This will be my 3rd yr to work with him (we have been swimming since May) and he insists he has to hold his nose, wont relax to float on back, etc... I kid you not in 1- 30 minute lesson at this ladies house the other day, he was treading water, jumping off the diving board without holding his nose, AND swimming relaxed on his back with her. For HIM its going to be worth the time and money. lol He also got some new water ski's that we are trying to help him on. I think anything that builds his confidence in the water will help in that process as well.

I am disappointed, we found out last night that we cant get in with the horse lady until September. :( Another lady had a 2 yr waiting list!! O myyyyy... I had no idea riding lessons were that popular around here?

Kym, can I tag along?? :) What part of Mexico?

Have a great Summer everyone!

My son never did swim lessons and he's a great swimmer. We just go to the pool a lot and eventually got it. Swim lessons were horrifying for me as a child.

By Jackie on Wednesday, June 15, 2005 - 11:00 am:

My kids have always done swim lessons. For them, its more of a social thing I think. MY son who is almost 11, has been in swim lessons every summer since hes been 6. He loves it, and hes at the top level. Its good for him, great exercise at that age, where they do alot of lap swimming, and perfecting different techniques. My almost 6 yr , just got done with her 2nd session of lessons. she was afraid of putting her head under . The lessons did wonders for her. At the younger age, its alot of fun for them, its just not lessons, its playing and learning at the same time.

By Rayanne on Wednesday, June 15, 2005 - 11:45 am:

Eve, my daughter is taking swimming lessons now and is doing pretty well. I actually signed her up for 2 more lessons next month. She will be in the pool with out me though. She will swim and learn how to float on her back next month.:)
