Warning about Capzasin (for arthritis)..........

First of all, it is made out of the same stuff as pepper spray. So it burns on your skin. The lable tells of the burning. But not to the extent that I needed. After putting some on my hands and then washing them SEVERAL TIMES before touching my 4 month old, my poor baby started to burn. He is sleeping now, but he has had 4 baths w/ Dawn Detergent, two just plain soaking baths, two rubdowns w/ olive oil, one bath after covering him in crushed Tums/water mix, one bath with baking soda, and one last bath with Maloxx Max. I had called my ped first thing and he said call poison control. Poison control told me to try all of the above remidies.

I have no idea exactly where he hurts, but you can tell he does. I think it even got in the diaper area OUCH. I also think it passed thru the material of his clothes. Thankfully, so far, there is no rash or blistering going on.

My hands are just now starting to calm down in the burn. On the good side, my fingers don't hurt like they usually do and I can actually type this right now w/ some speed. But I can tell you for sure I will never EVER use it again, no matter how well it works.

So if you or anyone you know that may care for you child uses this stuff, NEVER touch the baby for several hours and several washings, esp direct contact.

When I read the directions, and even spoke w/ the pharmacist before using, it never explains how easy it would be to transfer the stuff to another person. I felt the burn they described would be similar to what you feel w/ the product called "Icy/Hot" or a bit worse than BenGay. It is far more severe and WAY longer lasting.

Poor baby! I know all about that stuff, and it is hard to wash off your hands. While it DOES help arthritis, you have to be extremely careful *what* you touch afterwards, even after washing your hands.

I knew someone who rubbed their eyes after using it. He ended up in the ER for that.

How's your DS now????

He is doing okay this morning. I think I see two tiny red areas....both in places I would not have tought we touched. He was peaceful this AM but not all smiley as usual. Then to make it worse, he got his 4mth shots today. He reacted last time w/ fever and feeling rotten for several days. But on the good side, the dr said he looks good and we should have no further concerns from his exposure to the lotion.

Mom says her hands are still burning this morning. Also she had her hands on her cheek last night in bed and her cheek started to tingle...this is hours after application and several washings. She gave her dog a bath in warm water today which hurt her hands. Hope the doggy doesn't get it.

My hands no longer burn, even w/ warm water, but then I was in all of the above remedies several times where Mom was not.

So anyone who reads this, PLEASE tell others. The warnings on the package are not sufficient for the effects it has, esp being transfered to others.

Wow, that's scary! I never realize it could rub off on other people. Poor baby!

bump, please be aware of this OTC drug and how harmful it is to your kids. The box does not issue a strong enough warning.
