My TV is Posessed!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive May 2005: My TV is Posessed!
By Amecmom on Friday, May 20, 2005 - 02:21 pm:

Help! After my TV has been on for about 45 minutes, the volume goes all the way down by itself. Then after about ten minutes if you leave it alone, it goes all the way up. The menu pops up on its own.
At about 5 am the other day it turned itself on!
This is a Philips 36in. TV
Has anyone had problems like this?

Do you have Dish Satellite? I asked because my menu pops up on it's on.

As far as it coming on by it self are you sure the timer hasnt' been set accidently?

How old is your t.v.? I had one that did this and it was just old and needed to be replaced. It was kind of spooky though.

Try changing the batteries in your remote.

By Sunny on Friday, May 20, 2005 - 03:10 pm:

My first guess would be the remote. If juice or other liquid spilled inside, it could be the cause of your problem. (Has anyone been chewing on it maybe? :) ) There could be a short circuit in it causing it to send signals at random. My second thought was someone else close by has a remote on the same signal as your TV, but I thought I read you lived a distance away from your neighbors?
If not, and replacing or removing the batteries doesn't help, I'm not sure what it could be.

Our TV in the bedroom changes channels by itself. It took us awhile to figure it out, but we finally decided that it's because we have DISH and our next door neighbor has DISH. I think when they change their channel, it sometimes comes over and changes our channel.
It was really kind of spooky until we decided what was probably (hopefully!) happening, lol.

We bought the tv in 2001 (the extended service contract just ran out - snicker snicker isn't that always the way?

We took the batteries out if the remote. No help. I guess it could be related to the
satellite. I'm going to try it with a dvd and see what happens.
I checked all the menu features to see if something was on that shouldn't be. Nada (no timer, nothing).

All I can think of is it's overheating or like Sunny says, has a short circuit.

This afternoon, desperate for some peace, I had to turn on the tv upstairs and use the baby monitor to listen to the sound.

Talk about ghosts in the machine ... thet should pay my electric bill when it comes in with two tvs onn at once!
Thanks Ladies,
Ame

I consulted with my Dad about your TV problem. He's a retired electronic engineer and a good Mr. Fix It. Below is his reply. Sounds similar to above posts. LOL! Hope you solve the problem soon!

That's a good one..... I suspect the TV remote control... When she turns on the TV take the batteries out of the Remote control.
If it was the Remote the volume should stay the same after 45 minutes. I wonder if the remote control was dropped in water at some time. If that doesn't cure it put new batteries in the remote. Also check that the Infra Red window on the TV is clean (if she can find it) should be along the front someplace. There is another test, if none of the above work, that is to block the Infra Red window with black tape or something so that another Infra Red source is not triggering the set to do funny things..
If the first test solves the problem , go to WalMart and buy a generic remote control..
If it's something in the set, I don't have an answer.
Maybe someone is playing a joke on her with another remote control??? Ha ha.
