ear infections

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive May 2005: ear infections
By My2cuties on Friday, May 6, 2005 - 10:09 pm:

I think I have an ear infection. For the past couple weeks I have had really horrible sinus drainage and stuffiness and then last week my ears started popping. Now my left ear is almost totally stopped up, and it has pains in it every now and then and I can hear my heartbeat in it. :( I am going to my doctor on Monday so maybe I can get some relief, also DH thinks I am crazy but do you ask your ob doctor when you are pregnant about things like this or do you have to ask another doctor? DH told me to ask the ob doctor and I thought they were only for female things, what should I do? In the meantime I am going to take some children's Tylenol for the pain and put a heating pad on it (I think that's what you do...right?)

My OB's rule was that if it was something I would need an antibiotic for then I had to see my general doc. Which was kinda silly, because my doc usually called to ob to ask what I could take.

Feel better! When you're pg, your sinusus can really go haywire - something with the increased fluid and hormones.

Baby Tylenol isn't going to help. Take the real thing.

Anytime I was sick when I was pregnant I called my OB. She would have me come in and then if I needed antibiotics she would prescribe them to me. An OB is always up to date on all the meds you can and can't take while pregnant....I just felt safer going to her. I would call your OB, especially since you are so close to delivering.

Hope you feel better soon.

Take care of yourself!

I'd give your OB a call. I always checked in with them first when anything health-related happened during pregnancy. You want to make sure not to cause any harm to the baby, either from the infection or the antibiotics. You may want to call their 24-hour number and see if they want to call in a prescription, so you can get a headstart if it is infected. Take it easy.{{{Candis}}}

My OB is still treating me for my thyroid problem that was discovered when I was pregnant (dd is 16 months). I would just ask your OB on Monday if it is still bothering you.
Ditto on the regular Tylenol.

Garlic and clove in your ear is both a natural antibiotic and pain killer. You can get it from a health food store, and it would be perfectly safe. It takes the pain away instantly. It might really help over the weekend, while you're waiting to hear from your doctor.
I hope you feel better quickly!

My ob told me when I was pregnant that she basically takes over for my regular doctor for anything I need during my pregnancy. Call your ob...they can give you something if it's an infection.

Oh boy, I feel alot better this morning, my ear is not stopped up anymore but still has a little pain in it. I slept with the heating pad on my ear all night on low, and took Tylenol. And my dd prayed for me. :) I can't believe how much better it feels. I should have done something sooner than I did and I wouldn't have been in such an uncomfortable situation for so long.

I actually did have an ear infection during pregnancy. I called my OB and she had me go see my regular dr. All dr's have the "list" of meds taken during pregnancy. They are rated A, B, C... as far as risk. If I remember correctly (over 8 years ago) I think the one I had to take was a B because I am allergic to pennicilin.

I took Tylenol Sinus while pregnant. It really helped on the pressure and kept me from getting a full infection. However, I did get an infection after birth because I quit the Ty.Sinus so I wouldn't dry up my already low milk supply. It had never crossed my mind that sinus meds would effect my milk, but now that I think about it, ofcourse it would. (BTW, all called my pharmacist to ask if the OTC would be okay while nursing. He said yes but to drink extra amounts of water.)
