Anyone have a container garden?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive May 2005: Anyone have a container garden?

I planted some veggies and some cantaloupe on my deck in containers yesterday. I am excited to see if they come up or not.

Got up this morning to find that darn puppy had already dug in one of the pots. Think it was the cucumbers. grrrrrr Any ideas of how to keep her out of the pots?

Try cotton balls with lemon oil - I have read of using that to keep cats away from house plants. All the dog repellant stuff I have used outdoors has a somewhat nasty smell, so I wouldn't recommend that. Or, put chickenwire over the top of the planters (cut to a size so you can bend it either over the edges of the pot on the outside or inside to go down in the dirt at the edges) - the plants will grow through and the dog can't dig through. I've used that to keep cats and squirrels away from my daffodil bulbs.

sticks w/ plastic grocery bags over it, kind of like a little green house. Keeps critters out of it until they are big enough to fend on there own w/ the added benifit of keeping the seedlings out of the wind and cold if that is a problem in your neck of the woods.
