Can you help me identify this bird?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive May 2005: Can you help me identify this bird?

DH rescued a baby bird last night that had a hawk (I think he said) circling around it and knew it would go after the bird if he didn't pick it up. He then thought that once he touched the bird the Mom wouldn't take care of it (which we now know is a myth) so he brought it home. I'm trying to figure out what it is so I know what to try and feed it. It's the typical bird I see all the time but I have no idea what they are called. I'm going to call the wildlife rescue later but want to feed it before then.

bird

If you bring it back to where he found it and leave it there the mother will probably come back and take care of it.

be really careful around Kaitlyn and the bird. (and yourself and dh). You can get very sick from birds.

Looks like a robin, I would try small earth worms. And definately make sure you wash up after touching it.

I do an occasional baby bird rehab now and then. Birds are very easy to feed. Just make sure that you sterilize the syringe after every use. They get sour crop easily and that will kill them. I have wild life rehab number in Palos Verdes, maybe you can call her and let her know where you are and she can tell you where to go. I think the birdy looks like a sparrow.

When I rescued a bird I just took it to the local vet to care for before the wild life rescue people could come get it.

Shelly, i'm reading that canned dog or cat food is good to feed them because they are high in protein. Is that correct, if it's a sparrow? I actually fed the bird a bit of plain oatmeal (it was all I could think of at the time) and it ate very well and takes water well too. It's very chirpy and friendly. I was also looking at baby pictures of birds and it kind of looks like a baby starling, but shows no resemblance of what the adult looks like.

Sorry! I was trying to edit my first post and accidentally posted it twice. Deleted it.

It looks like a baby robin to me. I raised one as a teenager amazingly enough, with the help of its mother. We lived in town, and it was a very young bird. I had a fenced in yard, and no animals around, so I placed it in a small box with warm material, and the mother would come down a couple of times a day and place insects in their for me to feed it.

To supplement this, I fed it raw hamburger meat. I've also read that canned dog and cat food will work.

Be very careful with watering it, as they can drown easily! Good luck, make sure to keep it warm.

I thought Robins had an orange or red chest?

His chest looks orangy to me! It looks like a small robin to me, too!

Thanks for that info Dawn. This bird is the friendliest thing ever. It feeds very well, drinks well and I took it outside a bit ago to walk around and it just came up to me and cuddled next to my legs. It's very talkative and has a great amount of energy. I had a few things to do today so I havn't contacted the wildlife rescue yet but I find it a tad funny that DH is falling for this bird, and he's a bird hunter!

Do you have a Petco near you? I always use Exact for my birds. Do not give the baby water. The water is mixed with the food and that is how he gets hydrated. In fact today, I picked up a baby bird. Not a wild one, but a baby, handicaped Love Bird.

I thought I would share this.kinda funny. My dd and I was coming home from my parents house and I noticed a small bird doging traffic so I stopped and picked it up. It was a young cardinal. I went back to my parents to have my Mom look at it and see if it was alright it didnt fly or try to anyway. I gave it alittle water and I put it in a box until I got home to put it in a bigger cage. Well I had to stop at the store before I went home. When I finishe I put dd in the car and I unloaded the grocerys. Next thing I know dd is screaming her head off help me help and crying I run up to her door and see that she had opened the box and the bird is flying around her head. I couldnt keep from laughing I opened the door and the bird fly away. it was a sight when dd had her face smashed up against the car window screaming. she didn't think it was though so that is one of many times I picked up a bird to help or thought i was going to help.

That is one of the funniest things I've ever heard, Momoffour!!! It sounds like something that would happen to us! That had to be so funny seeing her! Poor little thing!

Oh my gosh, i feel for your dd. That would have freaked me out. I am not one that would pick up a bird to help it. Not that i wouldn't want to help it, but because they creep me out for some reason. I don't mind them flying around outside at all, but my sister had a cocketeil and would put it on my shoulder and it would walk on me and i hated it. To me it is just gross to have a bird walking around on me. So like i said, i feel for your dd. I would have freaked too!

oh, and Melissa what a sweet dh you have to want to help a bird like that!
