Great tip for moms of babies (& save yourself a trip to the ER)

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive April 2005: Great tip for moms of babies (& save yourself a trip to the ER)
By Dana on Wednesday, April 20, 2005 - 08:23 am:

Spent yesterday morning at the ER w/ my little one. One of the silliest reasons I could think of. A long hair got wrapped around two of his tiny toes. One toe was severe and was even cut by the hair. And that toe was also very swollen. I tried to unravel the hair, but couldn't. Went to the drs and she used these tiny little scissors that have a hook on the end (so small I couldn't even see the hook). The toe was so swollen she could not grab the hair, so she sent us to ER. I felt like such an idiot.

Anyway, thank goodness the dr on call was there. She looked at it and said...."we need to get some Nair on it". OMG! Ofcourse. Why didn't I think of that? So here we are at the ER waiting for Nair! I could have done that at home. But I don't need to feel too stupid. My dr didn't think of it, and little C had about 7 people from the ER come look at his toe (it was really looking bad) and all of them were just as surprised as I was to use Nair. Any other dr, we may have been using scissors again.

So please spread this little tid bit to all your moms w/ babies. If hair gets wrapped around an appendage, just use Nair. The dr said she has seen babies loose toes from hair.

How is the toe today? Poor little guy!

Oh and Dana... Welcome to life with a BOY!! Its just your first visit to the ER. Sounds like he is already getting into things. hehehe Mine (all 3 boys) all went to the ER by the time they were 2.

At one point I was scared to go back for fear they would think I was abusing my children! LOL
Boys are something else. :) Love'em!

Love the tip!

Wow - I'd be scared to put Nair on the inflamed broken skin of a baby. No wonder you didn't think of it.
I read about this happening in one of my baby books befor I had my son and thought I could learn everything from the manual (ha ha ha). Anyway it warned to check - especially hair getting wrapped around his penis.
So, I became neurotic about checking for hair.
I thought later on that it was kinda silly. Now I see that it was a good thing.
Hope your baby is no worse for "hair"

I had exactly that happen with my oldest when he was a baby, but the doctor was able to get the hair off. And I felt like an idiot and a terrible mom for not noticing his toe was a bit swollen.

Replies to Connie and Ame...

Oh, no Connie, this is our SECOND trip to the ER! He was just 3 wks old on the first visit. It was a UTI and we stayed at the hospital for 6 days. Wonder what our next reason for the ER will be. Hmm, figures it was all a boy thing! :)

Ame, OMG! Thanks for the heads up (no pun intended) on the penis/hair thing. Can you imagine? Thank goodness it was just a toe. You can bet I will be checking his little one at each changing now. OUCH! Wait til I inform my hubby of this....he'll have me shave my head w/ that information.
