Fashion question/rules?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive April 2005: Fashion question/rules?
By Sunny on Saturday, April 16, 2005 - 10:16 am:

I am not into the latest rules regarding fashion and what's okay to wear during certain times of the year. I am more of a jeans and sneakers person. I do recall a rule that said no white between Labor Day and Easter, but I understand this has become lax?
Anyway, I'm attending a christening tomorrow and was shopping around for something to wear. I found a flower print black skirt that I really liked, but they didn't have my size so instead I bought a solid black long skirt. I also bought two salmon colored shirts, one is a blouse that I thought I would wear over the shirt.
Will I be breaking any rules if I wear black? Will the fashion police give me disapproving looks? (just kidding :) ) A lot of the clothes I saw were pastels and they really don't look good on me, so I was going more for a classic look. What do you think?

I think the black skirt is just fine. I'm not clear if you are wearing the blouse over the "shirt" or skirt. If you are talking about an overblouse, I would only wear it out over the skirt if it has a straight hem and is meant to be worn as an overblouse (as opposed to a shirt-tail hem). Otherwise, I'd tuck the blouse in. This is a personal bias, as I think shirt-tail blouses worn out rather than tucked in are very informal. I wear straight-hem overblouses to work, and shirt-tail blouses out over jeans or slacks on weekends and for informal stuff. (I wear overblouses because I have too much tummy and not much of a "waist", so they are camouflage (had to ask my son how to spell that).

I plan on wearing the blouse over the shirt. I believe it is an overblouse since it does have a straight hem and is a very light (lace-like), see-through fabric. Although I've done it, I tend to avoid any clothes that need to be tucked in since I have a short waist and a large bust. I'd rather wear a dress or something over the tucked-shirt to hide it. :)

I'm not sure if I would go with a long black skirt for springtime, but If you look and feel good in it, it should be fine. How long is "long"? I think mid-calf is a great length, but a lot of the length depends on your build.

Sounds lovely. I wear black pants or a skirt to church all the time. Just change up my blouse to the season. To make it more festive looking for the occasion, carry a fun little clutch or have some cute slides/mules on.

I think it sounds perfectly acceptable. Ditto the fun purse or sandles idea. Have a nice time!

Black on the bottom, whether a skirt or dress pants, is year round. It is a very classy, elegant look that is never out of style or season.

Hope you had a nice time at the christening today.
