Gas Prices: Have you changed your diving habits?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive April 2005: Gas Prices: Have you changed your diving habits?
By Karefl on Friday, April 8, 2005 - 05:57 pm:

Hi everyone,
I was just wondering if anyone else has changed thier driving habits since the price of gas has gone up. I see reports that people haven't changed that amount that they drive lately, but I KNOW many people that have. For instance...I had to go to the other side of town this morning for a field trip & on my way home I made several stops at places that could have waited till later, but I didn't want to waste the gas for another trip! I even made a stop at the light bulb store that I would have had dH make, but didn't want to waste the money!
Just wondering what the rest of you are doing b/c the news makes it sound like I'm a penny pinching minority!

BTW the news just said that the average gallon of gas costs $2.30 UGH! I may never be able to leave the house again! Can I order groceries on the internet??? LOL

By Emily7 on Friday, April 8, 2005 - 06:02 pm:

LOL, We try to save gas any way we can.

By Tink on Friday, April 8, 2005 - 06:15 pm:

We haven't changed our driving habits but I am such a homebody that I always have combined all of our errands into one trip, if possible. But our city is so big and has such an indequate public transportation that we don't have many options. Gas is running around $2.50/gal here.

And internet grocery shopping may be available in your area! Safeway offers it here and peapod.com offers it on the East coast, I believe.

My husband just bought and Audi that needs premium. He's been driving my old Maxima to work because it doesn't need premium anymore. We just got a new Quest and I've been putting in mid grade gas because I', not springing for $2.56 a gallon!
Other than that, I still do the driving I have to.

We haven't changed all that much yet. It is 2.23 here and I assume we will start watching it in the near future if it keeps rising. But for now we fill up the van for about $30 and it last Monday to Friday, but I am a sahm and that is my vehicle to drive. :)

By Trina~moderator on Friday, April 8, 2005 - 07:44 pm:

No. I have always combined trips into one if at all possible. I hate running to the store or going out for just one thing! LOL! DH still has to commute to work and I still need to drive the kids to school.

By Breann on Friday, April 8, 2005 - 07:48 pm:

No. Haven't changed. I should, but haven't.

By Dawnk777 on Friday, April 8, 2005 - 08:47 pm:

Haven't changed. I really don't travel that much anyway, other than errands around town and taking kids to school.

By Jelygu on Friday, April 8, 2005 - 09:19 pm:

I haven't changed either. I always combine trips anyways, and I can't stay at home all the time. It would drive me nuts!

By Vicki on Friday, April 8, 2005 - 09:23 pm:

I haven't changed either. I also have to use premium and on Tuesdays, it is the same price as mid grade gas, so I always fill up on Tuesday now. LOL I used to try to remember that before, but wasn't great about it. I do make sure I do it now!!

By Palmbchprincess on Friday, April 8, 2005 - 11:26 pm:

I haven't changed too much, though we're really starting to feel it. The lowest unleaded I saw yesterday was $2.12, diesel was $2.38, as much as premium. Last summer it was *much* cheaper than the unleaded, so I'm surprised by the really rapid jump we've seen in the past couple weeks. Unfortunately, we live too far outside the city to not drive everywhere, but I think it will seriously cut down on the summer activities we were planning.

I need to figure out at what price gas has to get before it justifies me buying a $45/month train pass to get to work. I'm only 12 miles away from my office so I'm thinking it will have to get a bit higher before it'll be cheaper for me to buy the pass. If I worked all the way downtown, the pass would be cheaper at this price, I think, but my office is only halfway to town. It is nice to know my office is on the train line and my train station is not far away from my son's school in case things get really bad.

I also think twice before heading to our lakehouse for the day. And I'm really glad I got rid of my Suburban 4 years ago. I am thinking about my next car being a Prius.

By Jewlz on Friday, April 8, 2005 - 11:39 pm:

ok everyone are u ready for this? 278 for diesel to fill my dually up was a WHOPPING 89.27! at 2.78 a gallon. and gas is running 2.68 for reg and 278 for super and 288 for supreme. has it changed my habits. dont go many places anyways. but when i do i make the trips all at once. instead of making a few over a couple days. or the neighbors are being a bit more stick together. if anyone runs to the store then they call and take orders. this is so redicules. can u imagine what this is going to be like in a few months cuz they day its going to keep rising up and up and up!!!

By Jewlz on Friday, April 8, 2005 - 11:40 pm:

btw thats central calif where it wont rain again till november and the weather is already at 85 degrees ... rolls eyes

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, April 9, 2005 - 01:28 am:

Wow, our diesel is only $2.35! Gas had been up to $2.35, but now it's $2.32.

By Colette on Saturday, April 9, 2005 - 06:45 am:

I checked last night, regular is 2.13 and premium is 2.23 Dh just bought a motorcycle for commuting to work because he drives 80 miles a day and they get way better gas mileage than cars. He also has a road bicycle that he will ride in to work one or two days a week once the weather gets nicer. My van takes regular but his saab takes premium.

By Pamt on Saturday, April 9, 2005 - 10:06 am:

I plan my errands a little better and try to consolidate my driving around.

By Janet on Saturday, April 9, 2005 - 11:01 am:

We live in the middle of nowhere, so I have no choice but to drive...30 miles to Wal-Mart, 15 miles to the high school, 45 miles to the nearest mall... I just try to wait until I REALLY need to go, instead of just jumping in the car and driving. We bought an SUV just last summer because we travel out of state to see my folks (more room for the kids and us), and I am just sick at the pump. $50 to fill it up... my dh is such a pessimist. He says he can see it continue to climb until prices are $4 per gallon. Isn't there a law or something? :(

By Cybermommyx4 on Saturday, April 9, 2005 - 01:20 pm:

Haven't really changed much - I just consider high fuel prices part of living "in the middle of nowhere"...but I wouldn't trade it for anything. My DH uses about a tank of gas a week, and I use a tank every 2 weeks (mine holds 20 gallons)...my DS gets about 30 MPG with his car, and fills up about every 2 weeks as well. So it hasn't made a HUGE difference in our gas bill yet...if it continues to climb at this rate, it'll hurt more, but we have no public transportation to speak of around here, and we all need to get to work/school/gym, etc.

It's been very bad timing for my 16 year old who just got her driver's license. She thought she was going to get to drive to school everyday(aprox 15 miles) instead of riding the bus. We have let her drive at least one day a week so far. Also we don't have a car for her to drive yet either.

By Kym on Monday, April 11, 2005 - 11:47 am:

We live about 15 miles from "town" so I have always tried to limit trips to save time as well as gas, but now that I drive a suburban I'm really trying to limit. However I have 3 in sports, that usually happen in "town" and 1 in preschool, luckily dh rides him in MWF on the bicycle and picks him up so I don't have to go in more than once a day! BTW the price is 2.36ish here in Southern AZ.

By Palmbchprincess on Monday, April 11, 2005 - 03:53 pm:

Yesterday we filled up, and it cost $27. In a Jetta. Last summer we could fill up for less than $20. I almost cried when I saw the total! (Ok, not really, but I definitely gasped!)

By Missmudd on Monday, April 11, 2005 - 05:19 pm:

Yep, not driving much here, gas is 2.47 a gal diesel (thank goodness I dont drive one) is at 2.72. If I can walk I walk.

By Momoffour on Monday, April 11, 2005 - 06:11 pm:

we have we were planning on taking a vacation this summer to Arizonia and decided to go somewhere closer. They told us at the gas station the other day that before or around when school gets out that we will be paying close to 3.00 a gallon. What would of costs us 100-200 to go to Arizona will double and its not worth it takes away from the things you want to do while your there. We pay 2.19 here in Oklahoma and my mil said they pay 2.55 in ORegon

By Cocoabutter on Tuesday, April 12, 2005 - 10:33 pm:

We live right around the corner from a grocery store, so I don't need a lot of gas. Dh drives to work 13 miles one way four days/week. He has gone through $30 a week driving his V8 Buick. Gas here was 2.26/gal today for reg unleaded.
