A hare-brained scheme...can I do it?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive April 2005: A hare-brained scheme...can I do it?
By Pamt on Sunday, April 3, 2005 - 03:07 pm:

My DH is a huge fan of all things Monty Python. We both love theater. I really, really want to take him to see the new Monty Python play "Spam-a-lot" on Broadway--it's gotten rave reviews and stars David Hyde Pierce and Hank Azaria among others. Neither of us have ever been to NYC.

Here's what I'm thinking...I can get play tickets and we could drive from Louisiana to Mobile, AL to drop the kids off at the granparents (3 hour drive). Then we could drive to Birmingham and catch a SW flight to NYC-LaGuardia and get in New York around 5ish. Get dressed and go see the play, spend the night, and come back the next morning. I've actually thought up 2 scenarios:

1) Change at the airport, stow our stuff in a locker, see the play, eat, hang out at the airport until the 6 am departure the next morning w/o getting a hotel room. (very random and adventurous)

2) Have a hotel room to change clothes, sleep, but barely be there at all. (more adult and responsible, but not as big as adventure)

Obviously I like the idea of sleeping in a hotel room and it would only add a little $$ to the overall cost, but I sort of like the adventurousness of wandering about NY with no place to call home (the airport, I guess) and we could sleep on the flight on the way back. We wouldn't be "on the streets", but maybe listening to a live band until late and then hanging out at the airport until time to fly home. Plus...we've certainly been without sleep before and one night won't kill us.

Looking at flights and play tickets I think we could do this for about $600. Yes, that's a lot of money for one night and DH and I are pretty much tightwads. BUT, we love spontaneity ad adventure and we'd much rather spend money on memories than "stuff" (car, house, clothes). I think it would be a blast and blow him away if I just said, "BTW, we're going to NY tonight to see a play and we'll be back home tomorrow." He's been so supportive and sacrificial (i.e., taking complete control of laundry duty) with me being back in school and I'd like to blow his mind with something fun just for him.

I know it's crazy, but is it THAT crazy? What am I not thinking of? How close is LaGuardia to Broadway? Is this doable? Comments, suggestions, etc. are welcome!!

By Nicki on Sunday, April 3, 2005 - 03:28 pm:

Gosh, I wish I was more like you! That sounds SO fun. I think if I would go for #1. And hopefully get a full nights rest the night before the big event! It would be quite the adventure.

What a nice thing to do for your husband. My husband loves Monty Python, too.
Have a really fun time!!!
Nicki

By Colette on Sunday, April 3, 2005 - 03:42 pm:

Monty Python fans here too. It sounds like a blast!

By Trina~moderator on Sunday, April 3, 2005 - 04:01 pm:

I'd get the motel room. You and your DH could enjoy some special couple time as a fringe benefit to this adventure! smileywink Seriously though, I'd prefer to have somewhere as a "base" just in case. What if one of you gets sick during your trip? Would you want to be hanging out in the airport?

By Bea on Sunday, April 3, 2005 - 04:02 pm:

I wouldn't do this if you've never been to NYC. Please Please take a couple of days. Go to the matinee and save some money on the tickets. Get a cheap hotel. You'll only sleep there. Go up on the Empire State Building at night. Take a horse cab around Central Park. Go to see Radio City Music Hall and Rockefeller Center. Walk through the Village and eat ethnic food. Wander around China town. You can't just spend one evening in New York. You'll hate yourself for not putting a few bucks more into the pot to SEE NEW YORK.

By Kate on Sunday, April 3, 2005 - 04:44 pm:

Ditto Bea, if not, definitely the hotel room. You wouldn't catch me changing clothes (especially into NICE clothes) in a public bathroom. EEEEEKKKKKKKKK!

By Pamt on Sunday, April 3, 2005 - 05:44 pm:

Okay, so apparently I'm not too crazy! :) My biggest worry would be my DH being a little upset at the expense (as would I if he did it), but on the other hand we are both spontaneous and love a good story. I found really cheap airfare with flights direct from New Orleans to New York-JFK on Jet Blue. I also found a B&B or studio apt for one night for about $130. Most hotels were going to be upward of $275/night. It would actually be much easier and less tiring to fly out of N.O. and I could get friends to stay with the boys.

Bea, DH and I would love to do New York right, but this isn't meant to be a vacation. That's kind of the adventure of it all it's that this isn't a vacation, rather a night out at the theater...just an extravagant night. Kind of like flying to Paris for dinner. We love to travel and are pretty well traveled, so I'm sure we will make it back to NYC one day soon and go to Ellis Island, Met Museum of Art, Times Square, Central Park, etc. Those types of things start nickle and diming the price up astronomically, plus I just want to whisk him away for a play.

And my friend, Kate, you know that you and I are radically different on these kinds of issues. You are a self-professed germ-a-phobe and I play in kids mouths, get drooled on, sneezed on, peed on, etc. on an almost-daily basis at work and have gone on extended visits to 3rd world countries. Public bathrooms don't scare me and I can balance quite proficiently on one shoe-covered foot while changing in a small enclosed area. :)

By Ginny~moderator on Sunday, April 3, 2005 - 06:56 pm:

Definitely the hotel room. For one thing, then you can shower before you put on your fancy clothes, and after a day of driving and flying, you might feel a bit grungy.

By Dana on Sunday, April 3, 2005 - 07:25 pm:

I'd do the hotel as well. You can refresh yourself before the show, as well as a quick shower before catching the red eye home.

By Mrsheidi on Sunday, April 3, 2005 - 07:46 pm:

Hotel, definitely! Showers are a girl's best friend!
And, do it do it do it....just have fun!

By Tink on Sunday, April 3, 2005 - 08:10 pm:

Another vote for GO GO GO!!! I think it sounds like one of those things that you would regret when you think back to it in five years.

That said, I'm not that spontaneous and would definitely want a hotel room for "just in case".:)

By Kate on Sunday, April 3, 2005 - 08:45 pm:

Okay, okay, go and have fun, but don't forget hand sanitizer. :):):)

By Mommmie on Sunday, April 3, 2005 - 09:32 pm:

Go! Did you already secure tix to the show? Is it sold out? If you are going to make the trip I'd stay a 2nd night and see NYC. Paying one more night for a room is cheaper than another set of plane tickets to see what you missed the 1st time.

By Kym on Monday, April 4, 2005 - 12:33 am:

I love it, what are you waiting for:0 When I read the hare brained scheme I had to come in, my dh claims I have at least one of those a week, our problem is I have the schemes and he has to make it happen:)
I hope you do it, have a wonderful time, and relish in the memories with laughter for a long long time, that's what it's all about, living in the moment!

By Palmbchprincess on Monday, April 4, 2005 - 02:19 am:

Maybe I'm just nuts, but I would skip the hotel room. It's NYC! Be crazy!! However, Mommmie had a good point, if there is any way to stay at least one more day, do it. NYC is just way too interesting to only be there for a few hours.

The days inn is pretty cheap. It is like on 59th street and like between 9th and 10th avenue. Not in the middle of everything but should be clean... It is a days inn.... They are always clean..

maybe not... $160 a night and sounds not too good...

By Jann on Monday, April 4, 2005 - 08:49 am:

I would go!! I would do sort of a combo of both ideas. I would get the cheapy room, but use it to shower, change clothes but then hit those after hour clubs and have a great time after the theater. I am dying to see that show!
Have a great time!

By Kaye on Monday, April 4, 2005 - 11:44 am:

I would defintely go, and I get why you aren't seeing the city. YOur hubby will think you are the coolest (i read his blog, he already does though..lol). I would probably go for the hotel room, probably more for the couple time than anything else. My hubby and I went to Alaska when I was pregnant and we did without a hotel, it was a great experience (we ended up sleeping for two hours in the back of a pick up truck). It was definetly one of those stories we tell. Also just how many chances do you get without kids to be completly unresponsible. If you go without a hotel, would it be that hard IF you decided you needed one? I bet somewhere in NY has a place. Have fun! When are you planning on doing this?

By Kateg on Monday, April 4, 2005 - 03:30 pm:

Go for it! It is something that we would do! Enjoy yourselves! :)

By Pamt on Monday, April 4, 2005 - 09:24 pm:

Well, I got semi-wet feet about the expense so I asked DH if he would mind if I took one month's paycheck from the home visits I do on the side to spend on a once in a lifetime adventure. I just thought he would choke if he found out I spent several hundred dollars without consulting him since we don't spend over $50 without talking about it. He consented, but has no idea what's going on. I've found reasonable flights, tickets, and hotel (still have to worry about meals--we'll eat cheap--and ground transportation) and it looks like we'll get to NY early in the morning and leave early evening the next day, so maybe have time to do some extra sightseeing. I'm going to stop by a travel agent and see if they can get any better deals or otherwise I'll just go with my own. I hope I don't chicken out. I think DH will love it, but hope he doesn't flip at the expense. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for the encouragement.

P.S. I mentioned it to several kids in the youth group and they are really hoping I do it. One group of senior girls is going there for their senior trip and will be in NY the same time I'm planning on and offered their room for a quick shower and a change if all else fails.

Oh Pam, I'm so excited for you I live an hour from NYC, and haven't been to a show in 4 years! (Used to have season tickets to the opera, etc.) Have a great time!

DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Missmudd on Tuesday, April 5, 2005 - 12:07 pm:

Go Go GOOOO!!! I agree w/ everyone else, definately get a hotel room. "They are a silly bunch in Camelot"

By Peggy13 on Tuesday, April 5, 2005 - 06:21 pm:

New York is great and that show seems really fun - we go in at least 3-4 times a year to see shows. Here's a great website for discounted tickets - tickets are normally $100 a seat and not any cheaper for matinees, so any little discount helps.

Have fun! If you need any NYC info, feel free to e-mail me.

By Alberobello on Tuesday, April 5, 2005 - 06:47 pm:

I agree with Bea, but if that's not possible, stay up a night, it will be so much fun. Once when my son was 2, we left him with his grandparents in Italy and me and dh took the car for four days. We went to Tuscany and Liguria and we had to choose between sleeping in an hotel or dining out and spending the money in other things we enjoy (but we had to sleep in the car). We opted for the second and had a wonderful time! I washed myself in a fountain in a small village and the next day we went to some thermal baths to have a shower. I will never forget this trip, it was such an adventure! So i say if you and your dh are up for it, then do it! it doesn't sound crazy at all :)

By Alberobello on Tuesday, April 5, 2005 - 06:50 pm:

Sorry, i didn't read your last post Pam, sounds like you are staying in a hotel after all. Well, have a great time anyway. New York is such a great city. Have a lovely, lovely time!

By Bellajoe on Wednesday, April 6, 2005 - 01:14 pm:

I wish i had the guts to do that! I say GO FOR IT! That sounds like a great adventure! Have a great time!
