We are selling our Passat soon and doing it through private sale. I was wondering how many people have made money and if so, how much?

I don't think you will make very much money off the sale of a car unless you sell it to an uninformed buyer. There are so many places to go and check the fair market value of used vehicles.

We sold me DH's truck to someone he knew and got $12,000.00 for it. That was our down payment for his truck that he has now.

We just sold our minivan for blue book, it was in good shape, well maintained just a ton of miles, as far as making money? I don't know it was paid off and we sold it for $5,000 which we put on a new car, at the dealer they offered us $1500 because of mileage, so we had it detailed and sold it ourselves, a much better deal for us.

I think the only way is if you already have some equity in the car...like you made a downpayment when you bought it. We put a large downpayment and had a trade-in on our SUV so we could make money on it if we sold it right now because the book is about $5K more than what we owe. Other than that I don't think you can. Cars are such a pain!!
