Question about Insurance and rental cars

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive March 2005: Question about Insurance and rental cars
By Jackie on Sunday, March 20, 2005 - 06:55 am:

If you carry full coverage on your cars at home, does that carry over to rent a cars?
We will need a rent a car when we go to Florida in June..We dont rent cars often, so I dont remember. I "thought" if you had full coverage then you can decline the insurance at the rent a car agencies and you will still be covered? Does anybody know anything about this?

I have probably asked my insurance agent this question 5 times and each time she has told me that we were covered while driving a rented vehicle. So, we always decline the insurance at the counter.

By Debbie on Sunday, March 20, 2005 - 08:17 am:

Yes, you are covered. I asked my insurance agent after we talked into buying it one time.

I just ran into this situation myself a few weeks ago. I called my insurance carrier and was told that I was fully covered as long as I was in the United States and as long as my regularly insured car was not going to be driven during the same time as the rental car.

The rental place will still try to sell you on their insurance though!! :)

Ok, thanks everybody. I thought that was the case, but wanted to check with people who have experienced this.

Remember, however, that your deductible on your policy also applies to the rental car. If you have a $500 or $1000 deductible for vehicle damage, that could make a difference.

Call YOUR insurance agent to be sure. Ours is a special rider and we do have it.
And if you do have it, don't let the rental car people scare you into getting it anyway. They are very high pressure when it comes to making a little extra money. When we went to Disney World a year ago, the rental place made us feel like the scum of the earth for not taking their insurance and like we were risking our child's future by not getting it.
Also the credit card I use has insurance coverage attached to it when renting cars. You might want to check on that, too.

Good points, Debbie. Very good points.

Ditto.........our insurance covers it and we have had to rent cars the past 4 weekends. We use the same rental company so they have stopped pushing their insurance on us.
