Should I be concerned?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive March 2005: Should I be concerned?

My 9 month old woke up last Saturday (the 5th) throwing up and had a fever. When I took him to the doctor they said he had an ear infection in both ears and a sinus infection. The draining was making him throw up. The fever is a lot better but since then every time he gets anything into his stomach he throw it right back up and also now he has awful diarrhea (sp??). I took him back to the doctor on Wednesday because of all of this and they changed his antibiotic and told me to give him Pedialite for the next 24 hours. Nothing has changed though. He still has diarrhea and is throwing up. (only when something goes into his stomach) (I also give him some anti-nausea medicine before each bottle). Should I just wait it out? He doesn't look dehydrated.

Well, my DD is nine YEARS old, so this may not apply to a baby, but she's had a horrible cold for over a week and has an ear infection and sinus infection, too. She, also, throws up because of all the mucous draining into her stomach via her infections as well as her constant sniffing. My guess is the diarrhea is from the drug and the vomiting from the mucous. I would check in with the doctor to tell him what's going on, but it does sound normal based on my own experience over here. Our doctor said the stomach doesn't like the mucous and that mucuous in the stomach can cause actual pain, which my DD also has. BTW, my DD's whole bout also started with a fever and normal throwing up, and then turned into this awful cold where she was the most congested person I'd ever seen, and then these secondary infections came about as a result. She has an eye infection, too.

Anyway, like I said she's nine, not a baby, but I was also told about the draining making her throw up and it's pretty obvious anyway because you can see all the mucous when she throws up! Pretty picture, eh? Your son's little stomach is probably cautious and leery of anything that hits it now and at his age he probably isn't getting a huge variety of food so there isn't much to coat his stomach or absorb the draining mucous. Hope he feels better soon!

Is the diarrhea extreamly smelly?? Like gagging you to change the diaper?? That is a sign of rota virus (might not be spelled right) I don't think throwing up and diarrhea for that long is "normal" andI would be concerned too. Have you called them back to let them know nothing has changed??

By Jtsmom on Friday, March 11, 2005 - 10:56 am:

Thank yall for responding. Yes, normally changing diapers never bother me, but the smell makes me sick. What is rota virus?? Kate, I hope your daughter feels better soon.

I would be very concerned about dehydration in a 9 month old with diarrhea and vomiting. It may be that the antibiotic triggered the diarrhea, but still, dehydration is a major concern. Do call your pediatrician again if you haven't already. Especially if he has any kind of fever. And a quick check for dehydration in adults (don't know if it works in children) is to pull up the skin on the back of the hand - if it spring back right away things are OK, if it is slow to go back, dehydration is a concern.

Oh, and is he urinating with normal frequency and amounts? That is another clue for dehydration.

Rotavirus causes nasty diarrhea and cramps. Sarah was about 7 months old when she got it. I had to stop giving her formula and just feed her Pedialyte for a day. Then gradually work her back into food, which I ended up going faster than the doctor said, because when she felt better, she was HUNGRY!

I don't remember the poop smelling bad, though, just that it was pretty watery and icky that way.

My best friends dd was in the hospital last year with rotavirus. She was in for almost a week and she had been sick a couple of days before that. Her episode with it lasted much longer than a couple of days. They actually tested her stool for several things because she was so bad. They told her pretty much first thing that they thought it was rotavirus because of the smell, but they were running tests to be sure. So that is what I am going on by the smell comment. Thankfully my dd never had it, so I don't have first hand knowledge of it in that sense. Maybe it depends on how bad you have it etc??

Poor little guy.
I hope he gets better soon.

So far today he is much better. He kept down his first bottle this morning. The last time he had diarrhea was yesterday afternoon. SO hopefully he is on the road to recovery. Thanks everyone!!
