Green snacks?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive March 2005: Green snacks?
By Tink on Wednesday, March 9, 2005 - 08:37 pm:

Our school district has a strict policy on not allowing any home baked snacks in the classroom. All food has to be in it's original packaging if it is going to be used as a snack or for a class party. My ds's teacher has asked all the parents to send in a green snack for the St. Pat's Party they will be having. I really don't want to send in the usual cupcakes or cookies from the bakery. We can't use any produce like celery, grapes, broccoli, etc. Can you ladies help me out? TIA :)

Wow, that certainly makes things tough! Why are they so strict? Food allergies? Both my kids have severe nut allergies, and we take precautions, but IMHO your district is going over the top. Not to get picky, but what about food additives and colorings in processed food? Some kids have adverse reactions to those. And what's wrong with fresh produce?! Good grief! Sorry to go off there, but I just don't see their logic. LOL!

What about green Jello Jigglers? Or is that out because it wouldn't be in the original package and you'd have to make them at home. Argh!

Our Walmart has green cut apples in little containers with caramel dipping sauce in it. They are in a box and inside is one of those plastic tray with a seal over them. They are usually kept near the fresh fruit in a cup in the produce section. I'm not sure how much that would cost though because they are sold individually.

I hope my description made sense... :)

Good luck, that's a strict policy but understandable even though it's sad that our world has come to that...

Green tortilla chips with bottled salsa.

kind of expensive and not sure if you could get it in time but it would meet the requirements.

Cori, do you have a Trader Joe's near you? I don't have anything specific in mind, but if anyone had a packaged green snack available, it would be them! :)

You should be able to buy green oreos, spring time they usually have them out. I'll see if I can find anything else at the grocery tomorrow. :)

Pickles? LOL! They had green Pringles chips on the market once, but I think they were discontinued. I once bought some (as a joke), transferred them to a regular container, and screamed upon opening the can-- told the kids they must be moldy! Then I ate one and said "Hmmmm...it's not that bad." They caught on quickly, though ;)

Trader Joes has a really nice guacamole, but I don't think kids would like it very much. Why not cupcakes or cookies? I'm sure the kids would prefer them.

By Tink on Wednesday, March 9, 2005 - 11:45 pm:

I didn't even think of TJ's! (kind of silly since it used to be my second home when dh worked for them!) I'll be surprised if they don't have something.

The strict rules are due to possible contamination of Hepatitis or food spoilage. :( Most of the other nearby districts don't have this rule.

I'll look for the apple dippers. I haven't seen them but I haven't been looking for them! I'd thought of the jigglers but I don't think they would be allowed. I am wondering if kids would like the jello parfait that you can find in the deli area. I'd also thought of the pickles! LOL The oreos are a cute idea. I haven't seen them in green, just blue but I'll look around. Ginny, no particular reason. I've kind of gotten known as the mom with the original ideas and I want to keep up to my own standards. Most of the other kids will be bringing cupcakes and cookies.

Thanks for all of your ideas.

Not jigglers , but what about cups of green jello? They are individually sealed.

If candy is a choice, Walmart sells green apple caramel lollipops.

Beverage wise, you can purchase gallons of lemon-lme juice. Food Lion and WalMart have green pudding (by Looney Tunes). If I think of anything else I'll let you know.

The do have green oreos but they are mint flavored. Good luck on your search, let us know what you decide on.

I also found green apple licorice and green Guacomole Doritos! I have no idea what I'm going to end up doing. I still haven't even made it to Trader Joes yet!

We just got donuts from Krispy Kreme that had green sprinkles on them for St. Patty's Day. ;) Take a couple dozen of those. The teacher will love you for it I am sure. lol

I was thinking of you yesterday when I was at Trader's. I was walking around looking for green things! LOL. They have Snappea Crisps, that are actually much better than they sound, LOL. Those were on the shelf about the refrigerated items. They also had a variety of veggies crisps/chips in the chip section. Good luck! :)
