How do you get rid of terrible hemroids?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive March 2005: How do you get rid of terrible hemroids?
By Dana on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 01:51 pm:

I had 6 after delivery, most have gone back "inside" but are still there. One keeps popping out and it is killing me. If I lay around all day, it will stay in where there is no pain, but if I walk or cook or clean it pops back out.

I've used/ing Tucks, prepH cream, prepH suppository, and various other brands. It's been 5 wks now. What else can I do? Until this stops hurting, I will never get back to a normal routine.

My return OB visit is next week. Of course I will ask them (but what will have changed since they first occured?), but I need to get rid of it now.

TIA

My only experience is with my husband. He had them so severe he ended up in surgery. Prior to that sitz baths and ice alternated relieved a great deal of the pain and swelling.
Good luck!

By Jackie on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 03:16 pm:

Dana , I feel your pain LOL
EXCEPT I had one while pregnant, it was horrible, paniful and embarassing.. I tried all the otc stuff, didnt work. The only thing that worked, or actually made it better was sitting in a shallow amt of very warm water in the bathtub.. I would do this like 3 times a day while at the end of my pregnancy. The dr saw it and said it wasnt that bad, to me it felt like the size of a small elephant . It took over a week to feel better.

By Heaventree on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 03:27 pm:

Ask your doctor for a prescription so you have get something a little stronger, which might help. You can also try using a stool softener so that you are not making it worse each time you have a bm (check with your doctor).

By Ginny~moderator on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 05:48 pm:

I had similar problems, and my doctor prescribed a stronger version of Anusol than you can get over the counter - you can get an over-the-counter version. Anusol is intended to both shrink and help with the pain.

If you are not nursing AND ONLY IF YOU ARE NOT NURSING, take a stool softener such as Colace. A family member had a problem with a hemmorhoid where a blood vessel was involved and it was excruciatingly painful to even take a step. The doctor prescribed a very potent pain killer suppository.

Watch what you eat. Eat soft foods, easily digested foods. Applesauce is good, or any other fruit sauce. For reasons I don't understand, roughage helps make the bm less uncomfortable. I know when I am having minor problems, I try to eat at least 5 or 6 prunes a day until things get sorted out.

Certainly sitz baths will help. You can get a plastic insert to put in your toilet seat for sitz bath purposes. Alernating an ice pack and sitz bath is a good idea.

Be sure your doctor understands just how much pain you are experiencing and how important it is that you get a suppository prescription to both shrink the hemmorhoids and control the pain.

By Ginny~moderator on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 05:50 pm:

Oh, and try calling your doctor's office to see if the doc will phone in a prescription for a week's supply of a stronger product. Of course, you'll remind the doc's office if you are nursing.

By Amecmom on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 06:29 pm:

Nupercainal! Excellent stuff!

By Dana on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 09:37 pm:

Amecmom, is that OTC?

As for the BM's things are running smoothly there, literally and figuratively. But of course just going pulls one out. Even passing gas makes it pop out.

By Amecmom on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 09:51 pm:

Yes it is! it is the best stuff I ever used! I had a problem after Helen was born. It really helped with the pain. Also, ibuprofen if you can take it while nursing - I don't know. Feel better!

Colace is actually a pretty safe drug even if you are nursing. We give it to postpartum moms all the time if they have had a vaginal delivery just for the hemorrhoid problem. The literature says seek medical advice before using. I am a pharmacist and a mom whose had bad hemorrhoids and I went home from the hospital on colace. This is all information I have done and give advice about:

Colace (or generic docusate) 1 capsule twice a day.
Tucks to be sure you are clean and moist after every BM.
Sitz (warm water) tub soaks. A little bit of witch hazel (which is also in tucks) can be added to the water.
Suppositories or cream that contain hydrocortisone. If you don't want to go to the doctor yet, you can put a little on your finger and push it inside. The suppository or cream should be used after every BM and or 4 times a day.

Good luck.

By Imamommyx4 on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 - 08:49 am:

P.S. I was in a hurry and didn't think through everything really completely. If you should already be having diarrhea, do not take the colace. But if no diarrhea, then do take the colace. You do NOT want to strain even a little.

Also, do NOT sit on the toilet for any extended period. Don't use it for a reading throne bc it's the only place in the house you won't ger bothered for 10 minutes. Do what you are there for and get off. I'd go in to details about why this is bad, but it's really TMI for here.

The Nupercainal, Prep H, Anusol are all very good for the pain and itch.

Did your dr give you anything like Epifoam or Proctofoam HC at the hospital after you delivered? If those worked well, you might call your OB and ask if he/she woould call in a prescription for one of those and some hydrocortisone supp?

So don't strain, keep clean and moist, and get something with some hydrocortisone on it.

I wish you well and I am very sympathetic to the pains of hemorrhoids.

By Imamommyx4 on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 - 08:51 am:

And one more thing, if it is bleeding, see your dr

By Eve on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 - 09:11 am:

Owee! You are making me hurt! I had them so bad after pushing DD out. Ouch! They still bother me now and again. Fiber, fiber, fiber. Ditto no reading on the potty. (It's my pet peeve anyway. LOL!) A good friend of mine had them surgically removed and she was very happy with the results.:)

By Ginny~moderator on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 - 11:36 am:

Debbie, you are obviously informed and experienced in this matter. I had forgotten about Nupercainal, and did not realize it was OK to take Colace when nursing. What I remembered is that when my oldest was born (1961, in the days of 5-7 day hospital stays for childbirth), the nurses asked me to stop taking a doctor-ordered laxative because I was nursing and it was affecting my son.

By Imamommyx4 on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 - 02:38 pm:

I'm sorry. I hope I didn't sound like a know-it-all or something. Just didn't want her to miss out on something that might be useful. And like I said, the literature for the public, says "Seek medical advice before using if pregnant, nursing, etc". I guess I'm that medical advice. All of our post-partum orders for vaginal deliveries has it on them regardles of bf or not.

By Karen~moderator on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 - 02:59 pm:

Not at all!!!!! We value information from people who know what they are talking about.

By Ginny~moderator on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 - 06:18 pm:

Debbie, not at all. You clearly have the appropriate experience and knowledge - and I don't.

I agree completely with Karen - we value informaton from people who know what they are talking about. You clearly and definitely know what you are talking about and I'm really pleased and grateful you were able to offer correct information and correct my incorrect advice. (And imo you did it very tactfully).

The information you gave was clear and complete and you indicated why it is authoritative (which mine was not, being based only on long ago personal experience). As far as I'm concerned, you did exactly what I would hope any member who has good or better information than I (or any other poster) would do.

By Dana on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 - 08:42 pm:

Thanks for all the info. I have been following all your advice from the get go, so none of that has been in addition to my current problems. (I never could figure out why someone would sit longer then they need to, no matter what they are reading LOL!). My prenatals that I am still taking include colace in them, so covered on that base too.

I'll will look for those other brand names that you listed. I just can't wait for this to end. I have had at least two the entire pregnancy, then the six after delivery, and I am now down to just one, but it is a doozy! I just want it to go back inside and STAY THERE! (Yes, I "put them back in"--TMI--sorry)

By Pixie on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 - 11:41 pm:

ugh! I had similar problems and my doctor also perscribed me a stronger hemmoroidal ointment - it DID HELP but I thought they were still bad. He then said I should go to a proctologist - well I researched on what initial proctology exams could consist of and decided that was awful and waited it out, it got better on its own - remember 6 weeks is the bare min. of what your body needs to heal. Yes I still have issues from time to time but they are not bad. IMO - get the perscription cream and wait a little.

GOOD LUCK!!!

By Feonad on Wednesday, March 9, 2005 - 07:23 am:

What about the sitz baths? Salt and not too hot water?

Slow down Dana! You are going to fast. It will go away. Hate those things. I cried when I first noticed I had them after giving birth.

By Feonad on Wednesday, March 9, 2005 - 07:24 am:

stool softener.. forget the brand... it was otc...

By Feonad on Wednesday, March 9, 2005 - 07:26 am:

Colace that was it... Mine was seperate from the prenatals. Had to buy them at the drugstore.

By Kylerebeccasmom on Wednesday, March 16, 2005 - 01:49 pm:

Had to join in - I'm in early pregnancy and one of mine has popped out already and is killing me. Since I can't take a hot bath (in my first trimester) I've started turning on a hot shower and letting the water go right on the affected area for a minute or two, esp. right after a bowel movement when it hurts the worst. This helps a lot.

When I was 8 1/2 mos. pregnant with my first baby, I got three thrombose hemmorhoids the size of walnuts - they were horrendous and I ended up in bed for two weeks b/c I could not function. What I found that helped was soaking in a shallow hot bath while laying on my side, esp. right after a bowel movement (which to this day I can barely speak of b/c of the pain!) I stopped using toilet paper COMPLETELY (I highly recommend this) and used large Prep. H wipes. My doctor prescribed me Analpram HC, an ointment which helped a bit.

Funny story (if there's anything funny about this!) - once I had the baby the nurse took one horrified look at my rear end and insisted I have
a private room to recover - then the parade of nurses came in to check me out - my hemmorhoids were the talk of the maternity ward! Luckily they went away in a few weeks and only visit (in a much smaller form)once in a great while - ha-ha. Good luck ladies, BOY do I know your pain..

By Imamommyx4 on Wednesday, March 16, 2005 - 02:40 pm:

The Analpram is great. It has a pain reliever like the Nupercainal and hydrocortisone which actually reduces the swelling. But I believe you have to have a prescription for it. I work in hospital and we have to have a doctor's order for tylenol so sometimes I forget what is OTC and what is prescription.

Dana--I'd love to hear an update. How are you doing?

By Dana on Wednesday, March 16, 2005 - 08:08 pm:

It "went in" a few days ago. It is still there but inside. About 3 are still there, inside. I've been taking Omega3's again and they really help the digestive system and keep things running well. I think that has helped.

Kylerebeccasmom, I know what you mean about the shocked look on the nurse. Each time a new nurse had me roll over to inspect they went "oh my!" or words of the like. Thankfully, there were not lines waiting for a sneak peek viewing! My midwife told me "let me know if it turns dark, we'll need to take care of it if it does" With that news I figured I'd better see what things looked like. I about fell over. One of them, was so big I literally had my jaw drop. When I saw it, it looked EXACTLY like my new baby boy's penis, in size, shape and color. It pretty much was as big as my pinky down to the middle joint. So glad it got smaller.

I also stopped using TP for cleaning. Only the water bottle w/ squirt nozzle and some Tucks for soothing. Showers after wards was a must, just to feel the warm water.

Hoping they continue to fade away to where I don't even know they exist.

Thanks for everyones sympathy pains. For anyone who has been there, you never forget the feeling of it/them.

By Yjja123 on Wednesday, March 16, 2005 - 10:06 pm:

My husbands was the size of a kiwi. It was huge! They operated on it and it went to a size of a grape before going away. I hope you are feeling better soon and they do not come back ever again!

By Kylerebeccasmom on Thursday, March 17, 2005 - 05:09 pm:

Oh, Dana, I feel your pain! But know that if my monstrosities went totally away, yours will.

I laughed when you talked about touching and looking at it! I knew that if I looked at them I would totally freak out, so I didn't. I was so grossed out with how they felt that (this is true) I made my husband buy me surgical gloves from the drug store to apply the cream!!!!

I didn't believe anyone when they said mine would recede, but they did. Hang in there.

PS - The Analpram IS prescription, and it worked much better than the many other things I tried before it. Ask your doctor for a prescription!
