Need Break Ideas

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive March 2005: Need Break Ideas
By Paulas on Sunday, March 6, 2005 - 02:57 pm:

Thought I posted this yesterday but I can't find it anywhere.

Anyway, Spring Break is coming up. It starts Good Friday. DH gets Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday off and was thinking of taking Tuesday and Wednesday as well. That will give us 6 days off in total.

Any ideas on things we can do as a family that won't cost us a ton of money?

Is it warm enough for camping up there?

By Paulas on Sunday, March 6, 2005 - 04:56 pm:

I don't think it will be Bea. We still have snow on the ground. We could maybe travel about 12 hours and get to a place where it would be alright during the day but the evenings would still probably be around the freezing point.

I love Victoria. It's one of my favorite cities. How far are you from Seattle. That's a great place for families.

Can you do the tourist thing around your own town? Local museums, nearby national parks, famous landmarks in your area. Do you have any agricultural or cultural festivals during that time? Most of those things are fairly inexpensive and, since you are always near them, they tend to get overlooked.

Good idea.. Any day trip things to do near you?

Or you can stay in a cheap hotel for one night and get away from it all. Like a econo lodge... Got to book now though.

We did the tourist in our own town one time. It was lots of fun. Also booked ourselves into a hotel for one night with an indoor heated pool.

I dont know if they have these up there but in our state and some of our county parks they have yurts and cabins you can rent. They are about $30 a night, you still get a camping experience but you also get to have heat and a roof over your head.

By Paulas on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 - 05:27 pm:

Can't get anything in Canada for $30 night besides a camping spot.

We decided that even if we could find a cheap hotel (and the cheapest I could find was $65 before taxes) a trip would still cost a ton when you factored in meals and gas ( about a 6 hour drive).

So, we've decided that we would let each of the kids plan out a day...everything from breakfast meal to activities. It could mean that we will eat chocolate chip waffles for breakfast and drive to Grande Prairie (about an hour away) twice in a week but overall it would be WAY cheaper than going anywhere and having to pay for meals/hotels.

That sounds like a great idea, Paula! What fun for your kids!

Sounds like great fun!!!

You can call the local libraries and see if they have anything planned too. Usually they plan some short thing.

Sounds like a great plan! I imagine your kids are thrilled to be able to plan a day!! Have fun!
