Need tricks to make someone go into labor

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive March 2005: Need tricks to make someone go into labor
By Kristie on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 12:24 am:

Hey girls, my SIL is 40 weeks preg. and is misserable. The Dr. won't induce her and she is only dialated to 2 and 50% efaced. I heard there were ways (other than sex) to help a woman go into labor. Does anyone know any?? *she can't have sex cuz my brother swears the kid will come out with a black eye!! Goofy huh)

By Hlgmom on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 07:17 am:

Balsamic Vinegar, eggplant, lots of walking! She should be glad the doc won't induce- most are too quick to do it!!! The baby will come when it is supposed to! She could also try ONE glass of red wine- my midwife told me to have one to see if it would relax me( i was 15 days "overdue") Have they been doing primrose oil on her cervix? Tell her to keep working on her husband!!LOL

By Kim on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 08:17 am:

There is a pressure point you can stimulate to start labour. If you are interested let me know, but I am not a doctor....

By Jann on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 08:51 am:

Mexican food and a good walk!!!!!
Also sex.

By Monicamomof3 on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 09:04 am:

My midwife said that the reason Mex. food works sometimes is because cumin does something with the blood vessels of the uterus and makes it contract.

I would suggest to her a lot of patience! I know it is so hard. I went 3 weeks over with my first two. The lungs develop in the last weeks. That baby prob. just needs a few more days. I had a friend whose doc. induced her on her due date and the baby was in icu for 4 days with underdeveloped lungs. Had they just left the baby in the womb for another 4 days, she would have been healthy

Besides, if the cervix isn't ready to dilate, chances are it won't no matter what you do! OR- her uterus will begin to contract (getting her all excited) and if the cervix isn't ready the contractions will slow until they stop. My midwife calls it "just reving your engine" !! That would be even MORE discouraging to me!

I used a mixture of blue and black cohosh and primrose oil the last 4 months of preg. I am unsure about taking it to induce labor.

Raspberry Tea, Walk, Sex, Castor oil, Spicy food, Blue and black cohosh, Nipple stimulation.

By Angellew on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 09:24 am:

Take a walk, go on a bumpy ride and have sex!!! Worked for me!!!! :)

By Reds9298 on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 09:26 am:

Lots of walking!!!

By Rayanne on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 09:51 am:

I tried everything that I mentioned except: Castor oil and Blue and black cohosh. Rylee just did not want to come out, and my body just wasn't ready. Chances are, if she goes a week past her due date, they will induce her. They induced me when I was at exactly one week late.

Tell her to tell her DH to call the doctor and get an ok from them that is ok to have sex. A lot of men are scared to have sex when their wives/girlfriends/SO are pregnant.

By Heaventree on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 09:56 am:

Walking and Raspberry tea so I've heard. I couldn't walk, my back was way too sore. As for inducing, I hope I never have to go through that again. Three days of awful labour, a vaccum and forseps and almost a C-Section, just to have the doctor look at the plascenta (sp?) and say "This baby isn't late". Argh!

Due dates are not an exact science. I know that she is probably very uncomforatble, but I made my doctor wait an extra week before inducing and it turned out that he was not late in the first place. As long as the doctor is monitoring the baby closely I would wait.

By My2cuties on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 10:02 am:

be careful! sex is the best thing I have heard for inducing labor, I couldn't bring myself to do it the last week though, they induced my labor with my 1st dd 3 days past my due date and I am glad they did she has had a bm and we were scared but all turned out fine. :) Good Luck to your SIL and I hope she has the baby soon. sometimes using some of these methods to induce labor can be harmful, resulting in a c-section. So watch out and always get the doctors approval before trying any of these things.

By Missmudd on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 10:37 am:

Walk walk walk walk walk, up hills, down hills, over bumpy ground (be careful).

By Dawnk777 on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 12:01 pm:

Well, my cervix wasn't ready, but my water broke anyway and Sarah was born by c-section, since I wouldn't dilate, even with Pitocin! She was born at 36 weeks and a day! She never went to ICU.

Emily born at 38 weeks and 8 pounds 1 oz, did go to ICU, since she didn't want to breathe right away and they thought they heard a heart murmur (resolved by the time she was 2 months old). She was only there overnight, though.

By Imamommyx4 on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 09:10 pm:

Rayanne had my hold list except the black and blue cohosh. What is that?
But I think we did all of those things the night before I went into labor with dd. LOL

By Kristie on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 10:27 pm:

Thanks girls, I knew I could count on you. I was induced with Russell and they did it really slow and it wasn't bad at all. I thought there was a thing about cumin too but I wasn't sure. My MIL made me drink tea with cumin in it to get me to go into labor. It didn't work though. I will make sure she works on my brother. It is EXTREAMLY weird trying to be apart of getting my little brother to have sex, even though he is married and has two kids and one on the way I still have this fantisy in my head that my baby brother is a virgin!!
Any way thanks again for all the help!!

By Kernkate on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 10:41 pm:

Ditto Kristen....Walk Walk and Walk.
Lol Kristie you would never think baby brother would ever do such a thing:)

By Kristie on Friday, March 4, 2005 - 10:50 pm:

Oh ya Kim, Let me know what that pressure point is, even if we don't do anything with it I am way curious to know where it is. My DH says it is probley some where near the lower hip to butt area and I think it is on your foot. (The reason I think it is the foot is cuz when I was preg I was getting a pedicure and the lady told me she had to be careful rubbing my feet cux she could make me go into labor) I hope you prove DH wrong, he's always right!!

By Rayanne on Saturday, March 5, 2005 - 08:45 am:

Debbie~>They are herbs used as an effective means for inducing labor as well as increasing contractions during labor.

By Meltonmom on Saturday, March 5, 2005 - 02:54 pm:

My Mother in Law had a medical book from the 1940's. I love it. It is so interesting.

Anyway, one of the recommendations for starting labor is a GREAT BIG DOSE OF CASTOR OIL!!!

You can get it at your local health food store. Will it work? I don't know, but I guess it worked in the 1940's......
