Looking for a new dishwasher

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive March 2005: Looking for a new dishwasher
By Cat on Thursday, March 3, 2005 - 08:55 am:

I swear, the company that built our house put the cheapest appliances/fixtures in it they could find!!! You may remember we had to replace our microhood a while back because the one they put in almost caught fire!!! At only 2yrs old! We've also had to replace several light fixture because they were so poorly made and just last week the faucet in our bathroom because the sliver on it was bubbling and it looked awful! Well, now our dishwasher is acting up. Last night when I turned it on, no water was getting into it. It was starting to smell (like a really dry, almost starting to burn smell!). This isn't the first time it's done it, but it doesn't do it every time!!! The first time it did it was about a month ago. We thought maybe a tube was getting pinched so we unscrewed it from the counter and pulled it out a couple inches. It ran fine. So we put it back. It still worked fine. Well it's done it about 3 or 4 times since, but not every time. See, I'm no expert (:)) but I'd think if something were getting pinched it would act up every time, wouldn't it??? So anyway, we're looking for a new one. What kind/brand would you all recomend? This one is a GE (which the microwave was, too), so we're going to stay away from that brand. We're just a little put off by it now. I want something QUIET!!! This one is SO loud! lol We don't want to spend a whole lot, since we have to replace dh's computer monitor, too (it fried the other day). But I do want good quality. Let me know what you all think. :)

Kenmore or Whirlpool. I have always had great luck with appliances from Sears. In the past few years we've had to replace all of our major appliances including the stove, microwave and dishwasher. I got everything at Sears, Kenmore lasts.

I have a now 5 yr old Whirlpool Gold (quiet partner). Let's address the quiet part. lol! Well, we had a cabinet front made for the dishwasher when we built our house so it would match our cabinets. In order to fit the cabinet panel on the dishwasher they had to take out a layer of insulation on the dishwasher door. Needless to say it is LOUD now and I only run it at night. I have thought about getting dh to take the cabinet panel off and fix it back how its suppose to be. But I like the way it looks. lol! Ok sorry I am rambling.

I think they have some great new models out. Sil has a Kitchen Aid thats a few yrs old now. You cant hear it running it's so quiet. :)

I would look them up on consumer reports if I were you, before I bought anything.

We just bought all new appliances. We researched everything. The Maytag quiet series 100 had great reviews. We have had it for a month now. I love how clean my dishes are--no more rinsing before putting stuff in dishwasher. It has more jets inside so is not 100% quiet but is not loud or rattling. It has adjustable shelves which I think is awesome. Good luck on your search!

We have a Maytag and love it. It's been here since our house was built 6 years ago. Still works great.
And, we don't pre-rinse our dishes. Just scrape them and throw them in. We run it at night just after dinner.
It has the "quiet pack", so it runs fairly quiet.

Thanx for the suggestions! The BX (base exchange for all you civillians!) has a couple Kenmore ones that look good and are affordable. They're advertised as having "sound insulation". I usually run it at night anyway, but sometimes I run it in the afternoon after lunch so I'll have dinner dishes. I'll have to talk to dh and see what kind he wants to get (his opinion will be based on "what's on sale" lol). I'll let you all know. :)

Another thing to look for if you can see the dishwashers out of the box, I have heavy glasses, stoneware plates and all those pots. Make sure that the racks especially the top one can hold up to the amount of torture you may inflict upon it. The dishwasher b4 last still washed fine but the rack wheels broke off, bent and otherwise went south. I think it was a kitchenaid. My new washer is a kenmore.

We have an ancient Kitchenaid dishwasher right now, and keep thinking one of these days, we need to replace it. We figure 7 or so years for the previous owners and 8 years or so for us. That makes it about 15 years old. We are pretty sure the previous owners are the ones who put the dishwasher in. House was built in 1956, so I'm sure it didn't "come" with a dishwasher! LOL!

Had a portable Maytag before we moved here, when we lived in our rental. It worked great. We sold it to our old neighbor, since her dishwasher had died. She has since built it in and as far as I know, it still works great.

For replacing the dishwasher, DH was thinking Kitchenaid. My sisters both have KA and they are both really quiet. I know my current one is pretty noisy, when I'm on the computer. It's right above my head! (I'm in the basement, right below the kitchen!)

I've had a Bosch and a Kitchen Aid. Both are excellent! Quiet and very efficient!

We ended up getting a Frigidaire. It's got all electronic control, so the VERY active 19mo I watch can't spin the dial, AND it has a child lock on it so he can't even press any of the buttons! He'll be so upset. lol So now our kitchen is a mismatch of brands/colors. The microhood is black with chrome trim and a Samsung, the dishwasher is all black and a Frigidaire, the stove/oven is black with white trim and the last GE item in the kitchen (wonder when it will break) and the fridge is all white and a Kenmore. It looks alright, though. The black dishwasher looks SO much better than our old white one did. Can't wait to run it tonight! :)
