Heating/Cooling Price Question

We're going to put in a new furnace and a/c in the spring (all central) and wondered what a ballpark $ is before we actually start getting estimates? Do any of you have any idea even remotely what this might cost? We want to get a decent name brand, maybe upper middle range, and our house is a 1700 sq.ft ranch.

Oil, natural gas, electric or heat pump? I know that a gas furnace would cost us about $3500 and an oil one for $3000. We already have the ducts in place. Our house is 3500+ sq ft in oregon, the weather generally doesnt get below 25 and over 85 where we live.

It depends on what the SEER rating is. The higher the rating the more energy efficient the unit. We added central air last year and I LOVE it. It was worth every penny.

some links to explain it better

My DH is an HVAC guy. He said the furnace would be around $2000 and the A/C around $800, plus inst. What part of Indiana are you in, if you don't mind me asking? We live in Indiana too, if you're not too far away, he may be able to help you out. Just let me know.

We replaced our entire central air and heat unit, including the fan unit, in 1998 and it was over $4000 then. NO duct work included in that, already in place. My house is just a 1650 sq. ft. ranch style also.

By Colette on Thursday, March 3, 2005 - 07:44 am:

ouch...we paid more than that for the a/c unit.

I'm in Kokomo, IN, about 50 mi. north of Indy. All the duct work is in place, crawlspace. Thanks Nikki - that sounds about right after I spoke with my sister who lives not too far from here in Logansport. They replaced their furnace last year in a much bigger, older house and she said it was $1400. Don't know anything about the furnace though as far as brand or efficiency. Thanks so much guys!!! :)

I have no idea on the price. But, we do have central heat and air.
You will love central air! It is just fantastic :)

We already have everything central, it's just that my heating and cooling are both the age of the house (about 25 years) and are in need of replacement. They both work but are old, inefficient, and make weird noises!!! :)

We had a flood in our basement and had to replace the furnace, back in 1998. We had $5000 worth of sewer backup insurance and I think the furnace was roughly $3000.

We bought the house in 1997, and it was built in 1956. It still had the original furnace and we knew we would have to replace it eventually. (Gas-mizer, my foot! LOL!) It was nice getting a quieter, more efficient furnace, especially since natural gas prices keep going UP!
