Florida girl missing from bed...how can this happen??

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive March 2005: Florida girl missing from bed...how can this happen??
By Janet on Friday, February 25, 2005 - 11:36 am:

I am just sick at reading about the Florida girl who was missing from her bedroom. I just can't understand how this stuff happens! I have an almost 10 yr-old dd, and it seems that whenever there's an abduction or something, it's about that age. A girl walks three blocks to get some soda for her sick brother. She's abducted and killed. A girl walks down the street to get toilet paper and is picked up and killed. A girl goes to sleep in her grandparents' home and is taken from her bed. Lord, please let her be found ALIVE! I feel like crying. :(

By Breann on Friday, February 25, 2005 - 11:52 am:

:( It is a very sad story. I watched it this morning on CNN.
I am very overprotective of my kids. My dh always gives me trouble about it. Stories like this remind me why I am that way.
You can never be too careful. So scary out there now days.

CNN Story

:( I hope and pray she's safe and they find her!

By Emily7 on Friday, February 25, 2005 - 12:30 pm:

She is such a cute little girl.
I am like Breann, I am overly cautious with my kids & its times like this that make me not feel bad about it.
Prayers are being said for Jessica, may she be found safe.

By Trisa on Friday, February 25, 2005 - 01:02 pm:

This is so very sad.
What a sick world we live in.
I know its wrong to be OVER protective
with our kids but when you hear stuff
like this it makes you crazy with worry.
I pray she is ok but it doesnt sound good at all.

By Colette on Friday, February 25, 2005 - 01:05 pm:

I'm praying too...the grandmother seemed so upset. I hope it's a case of sleepwalking or something and not abduction.

By Rayanne on Friday, February 25, 2005 - 01:54 pm:

I saw a news conference this morning and just lost it. As soon as the dad spoke and was all chocked up, I couldn't help but cry. It is an awful thing that happened, and I hope that she is found soon.

Young Girl Molested at Bus Stop

FREDERICK, MD- It`s a safety alert for parents with school-aged children. Police said a Frederick man fondled a young girl while she was waiting for her school bus.
Parents send their children to school bus stops with all the supplies they need for class: Books, pencils, markers; now police say kids should also have tools to protect themselves from sexual predators.

Authorities say it`s too late for one Frederick girl, who they say was groped by a neighbor on her way to school.

Parents are concerned for area children. "It upsets me greatly. I’m glad my girls are, one of them`s gone and the other one`s older. That really upsets me,” said Beth Roberts, who lives nearby.

Roman Gonzales, 29, is behind bars at the Frederick County Jail charged with sex assault.

On Wednesday, a 7-year-old girl was waiting with classmates for the school bus in the Carroll Park Manor community in Frederick.

Police say Gonzales walked up to the young girl and fondled her in a sexual manor.

NBC25 News went to Gonzales’ home; his sister is defending him but would not talk on camera.

Gonzales` neighbors in Dulany Court say the assault has changed their community. “It upsets me greatly that someone would do that in broad daylight or at all to a young child like that. It`s really degrading,” said Roberts.

Frederick investigators were not available for an on-camera interview Thursday afternoon.

They say they`re doing their best to interview all of the witnesses, but there are some scheduling problems: All of the witnesses were in school Thursday.

Experts say there are several things your children should know to protect themselves. Teach your children how to spot trouble and be alert for strangers.

Also, friendly strangers can be dangerous strangers, and if a stranger tries to grab you, run away, scream and make lots of noise. The last thing a predator wants is attention.

Police say DNA links rape cases
by DON AINES

chambersburg@herald-mail.com

CHAMBERSBURG, PA. - DNA evidence links a sexual assault in Montgomery County, Md., with two attacks in Franklin County, Pa., Chambersburg Police Chief Michael T. DeFrank said Wednesday.

Pov N. Srun, 33, of the 800 block of West Washington Street, was arrested Monday and charged by police in Montgomery County, Md., with two sexual assaults in that county.

DeFrank said DNA links one of those Montgomery County cases with a sexual assault in Waynesboro, Pa., on Sept. 18, and one in Chambersburg, Pa., on Sept. 28.

"That DNA has been positively identified in all three cases," Chambersburg Police Chief Michael T. DeFrank said of samples taken from a Jan. 25 sexual assault at the Norbeck Montessori Day School in Rockville, Md., the Sept. 18 incident in the parking lot of Kmart on East Main Street in Waynesboro, Pa., and the Sept. 28 assault outside Weis Market on Wayne Avenue in Chambersburg.

No charges have been filed against Srun in Franklin County.

Police in Montgomery County are in the process of comparing Srun's DNA with those samples and evidence gathered after a Monday assault at the Wildwood Shopping Center in Bethesda, Md., according to Derek Baliles, an officer and spokesman for the Montgomery County Police Department.

In the Monday incident at the Bethesda shopping center, police said a man forced the girl into her minivan and sexually assaulted her.

A witness saw the partially-clad girl get out of the van and a man get into a silver Honda Odyssey, police said. The witness got the license number of the Honda. Srun was arrested later that day.

In the Montgomery County cases, Srun was charged in the Jan. 25 and Monday cases with second-degree rape, a first-degree sexual offense, a second-degree sexual offense and five counts of third-degree sexual offense. Baliles said Srun was denied bail at a bond hearing Tuesday.

Baliles said Maryland differentiates between vaginal rape and incidents in which a sexual offense occurs that does not involve rape.

Conviction on a first-degree sexual offense charge carries a maximum penalty of life in prison, he said.

"The two cases are in many, many ways, obviously connected," DeFrank said of the Franklin County assaults. He said it would be "appropriate" to characterize both as rapes.

In each case, as with those in Montgomery County, the assailant tried to hide his identity by placing pieces of duct tape on his face, according to Detective Scott Mummert, the lead investigator for the Chambersburg Police Department. Mummert said the Franklin County assaults each lasted about 45 minutes to an hour.

DeFrank said the assailant used a "blitz approach," forcing the victims into their own vehicles, driving them to another location and sexually assaulting them. All the victims fit a similar profile in that they were white, in their late teens or early 20s and "petite in stature."

In Waynesboro, the alleged victim was a 16-year-old girl. The victim in Chambersburg was 20 and the victims in Rockville and Bethesda were 18 and 20, respectively.

DeFrank said the assailant in the Franklin County assaults told both victims he was armed, similar to the cases in Montgomery County. Franklin County Assistant District Attorney Nancy Meyers said the man told the victims he was armed with a gun or knife

By Marg on Friday, February 25, 2005 - 06:35 pm:

Didn't mean to post such long articles.

But things are happening all around us.

We live 5 minutes from Waynesboro:(

So many things are happening...

Just be careful, stay safe and know your surroundings at all times.

By Jelygu on Friday, February 25, 2005 - 06:37 pm:

This is very sad. Hopefully they will find her and everything will be ok

By Kernkate on Friday, February 25, 2005 - 09:58 pm:

In cases like the little girl in Florida I can not figure it all out....The questions that come to my mind is...Did they come in just to get her?? How did they know where she was sleeping??? If the doors were locked how did someone get in?? Just alot of things that are unanswered.
I just hope for the safe return of all these children.

By Kaye on Friday, February 25, 2005 - 11:20 pm:

I have all those questions too, but then you have cases like elizabeth smart and it really makes you hopeful that the truth lies somewhere between the absolute worst and years of counseling.

By Annie2 on Friday, February 25, 2005 - 11:41 pm:

This is truly a sickening sad and disturbing tragedy. How awful. I would be beside myself with worry and anguish for my child.

Elizabeth Smart's case comes to mind, Polly Klause, Jon Benet Ramsey, another little girl in CA, neighbor convicted, I can't remember her name, god forbid :(, and then another case I think in FL where a 5 month old baby was missing. Whatever happened to that family? I think she is still "missing"

A character in the movie "the Color Purple" stated something to the effect: A woman-child ain't safe in a world full of men. How true is that!?

By Marcia on Saturday, February 26, 2005 - 01:03 am:

This happened in Toronto last summer. Someone who had previously been to the home abducted and murdered the little girl. They searched for her for months. It was horrible.

By Rayanne on Saturday, February 26, 2005 - 09:52 am:

I hardly slept lastnight because of this. I kept checking on Rylee to make sure that she was ok and still there. We have an alarm, so I know that if someone broke in, it would go off, but still. It is so scary and so sad.:(

By Happynerdmom on Saturday, February 26, 2005 - 10:31 am:

Terrible things happen in this world, but you can't let the fear paralyze you. You take sensible precautions, but then, IMO, you have to let it go and continue on with life. Life is too short to constantly worry about what MIGHT happen. (((hugs to all)))

By Breann on Saturday, February 26, 2005 - 11:26 am:

Rayanne, are you close by where this happened at?

Alarms are almost a must have now days :(

By Sue3 on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 06:00 pm:

Has anyone heard anything else ? Last thing I heard was that they were questioning the Grandfather.

By Palmbchprincess on Monday, March 7, 2005 - 10:56 pm:

The grandfather had a record from the 50s, but the police don't think he was involved. Last I heard (this weekend) she was still not found.

By Jann on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 - 06:25 am:

It seems to have just dropped off the news. I heard that even quit part of the search.

By Kim on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 - 07:46 am:

They might have a gag order, the police I mean. I think the police are becoming more careful of what they tell and don't tell. Maybe they are close to an answer and that is why they called off the search.

By Bobbie~moderatr on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 - 08:07 am:

We have two girls in Ohio that made national news. And are still missing...

Erica Nicole Baker has been missing from Kettering, Ohio since 7-FEB-1999.

And

Emily Rimel has been missing from her home since Monday, December 6th.

They think they are coming close to finding Erica's body because they have a man under arrest that they think ran her over and disposed of the body but he won't tell them where she can be found.

And there is also a man under arrest for Emily's case BUT he won't tell them anything. They know he was with her because they found her DNA on him but his attorney won't let him talk.

But cases like this seem to get there 15 minutes of fame and then they go away. It is up to the family/people involved to keep the story in the news.. People unless directly effected loose interest quickly and things like this become and after thought. "Oh yeah, wonder what ever happened to ***?"

There is a link on America's Most Wanted about Jessica Lunsford Looks like they have called off the search.. So unless something comes up we won't hear any more updates on her.

By Rayanne on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 - 10:10 am:

Breann, I am about an hour or so away from where this happened.

It is still so sad. I wish that they would find her and every other child out there that is gone. How can people do this?!?!

By Palmbchprincess on Tuesday, March 8, 2005 - 10:14 am:

There's still that little 5 year old girl from FL, went missing from DCF custody a few years ago, never to be seen again. We were picking up a form from the police station, and her picture, as well as a few other missing children dating as far back as the 70s were posted. The thing I didn't understand was some of them were recovered but unidentified bodies, which means there are moms out there whose children are gone, but the body never IDed. How can that happen? Never finding a missing child is one thing, but no one claiming a deceased one? I hope they somehow find Jessica alive, the whole thing is so sad.
