Glucose Tolerance Test question

I don't know if any of you have experience with this, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

The nurse from my doctor's office called yesterday to tell me my GTT results came back abnormal. I have to go in next Friday for another 1 hour and a 3 hour test. This is what strikes me as odd. She told me for 3 days before the test to eat normal. Also, for those 3 days to eat either 9 slices of bread or 2 candy bars per day. Has anyone heard of this?? I didn't ask any questions because I had to write down a lot of information. This has me worried, to say the least. On top of that, she said I'm anemic and I have to take 2 iron pills a day!! I swear, if it's not one thing, it's another. With my first I developed preeclampsia!!

I have experience with this. Yes, they want you to bulk up on carbs before the 3 hr. test to see how your body handles them. If you fail the first glucose tolerance test that doesn't necessarily mean you will fail the 3 hr. test, which determines if you have Gestational Diabetes or not. I had Gestational Diabetes during my first pregnancy but not during my second. I'd be happy to share my experiences. :)

I was also anemic and had to take 3 iron pills a day. I felt SO much better after I started taking them!

Hi Nikki,
I've never a problem with my GTT with either of my kids. THe only thing that was different with taking the test when I had my daughter 9 years agao was that I was told not to eat anything before i had the test done, but with my sone 1 year ago I was told that I could eat a light breakfast, something liek dry toast and a little apple sauce. I don't recall which foods they are but wether where pregnant or not, whenever doing a test of this nature what you eat can affect the results. As far as the anemia what can I say each pregancy is different. with my DH not problems, with my DS I was doing god until around 4 or 5 months my doctor on Iron pills and kept me on them up to 3 months after delivery. Maybe someone here can help you with some answers about the GTT tests, and I'm sure things will work out for the best. How much longer do you have( when are you due?)

Thanks guys! I feel a lot better now. Trina, I do have a few questions, if you don't mind.

Did you gain a lot of weight quickly? If so, was it before or after you found out you had it? I'll be starting my 30th week on Tuesday and so far I've only gained back 6.5 lbs of the 10 lbs that I've lost since becoming pregnant.

Also, did you have any other symptoms? I've noticed that I've been craving carbs and sugar. Things that I don't normally like are sound sooo good...like bread and butter! LOL I don't know if this is anything to worry about, or if it's just typical pregnancy cravings.

Thanks again!

Dandjmom: I'm due May 11th. I'm amost 30 weeks, only 75 days to go! woohoo!

I gained 18 lbs. during both pregnancies, one with GD, one without. No sudden weight gains, all gradually. The usual pregnancy cravings. I was clueless I had GD. No special symptoms. I failed the 3 hr. test and was sent to a Dietician and a Diabetes Educator.

When I was anemic I was VERY TIRED all the time. Once starting the iron pills I perked right up. :)

How is Kolby doing? Is he excited about becoming a big brother?

By Kolbysmom on Friday, February 25, 2005 - 09:37 am:

Oh yeah! He's very excited!! Every time we go to the doctor he asks me if I'm going to lay on the bed and push up and get the baby out! It's amazing how much he has learned about the whole process. He looks at my pregnancy books and will ask a million questions. He now knows(and will tell anyone who will listen)all about the function of the placenta! LOL

I go for my test Monday morning my doctor told me not to eat a sweet breakfast.Call me crazy but I always liked the drinks they give you for the test..lol

Good Luck on the 3 hour test I hope everything goes good.
Oh and I lost 10 lbs. at the beginning of my pregnancy too! Now I have gained that weight back plus 5lbs. We are really close in due dates, that is pretty funny. I am due on May 15th.

Hey Candis!!

I almost got sick trying to drink that nasty stuff. It was cola flavored...yuck!!!!

Do you feel like your pregnancy is flying by?? Mine sure does. It seems like yesterday I found out I was pregnant, now I only have about 10 weeks left.

How are you doing??

By My2cuties on Saturday, February 26, 2005 - 08:29 pm:

Doing good, it has really flown by. I cannot believe 10 more weeks... that is amazing. We are going next week to get the baby's carseat. Katelyn is especially excited but my younger (Hailey) doesn't really care, she will point to my belly and say baby, but that's about it..lol
