Where does your dialect come from?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive February 2005: Where does your dialect come from?
By Tink on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 01:12 pm:

Since we've had a few conversations about the dialects around the country, I thought this quiz was fun. Dialect Quiz
I scored 48% which means I'm barely a Yankee.

By Ilovetom on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 01:18 pm:

75% Dixie. I guess I already knew that. :)

By Trina~moderator on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 01:20 pm:

Interesting!

46% (Yankee). Barely into the Yankee category.

Not surprised, considering I was born in Ontario, Canada and have spent most of my life in New England. LOL!

By Kate on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 01:24 pm:

Oh please!!! I got 42% which means barely yankee!! I've lived in upstate NY my whole life!!

By Bea on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 01:25 pm:

By Palmbchprincess on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 03:00 pm:

49%, Barely Yankee... I've been living in TX too long! Out fo curiosity, I changed the drive through liquor store answer to "I don't know", since I had never heard of these until I vacationed in Nags Head (they have them here too, but not in the N East), and that made me 59% Dixie... go figure!

By Cat on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 03:32 pm:

"46% (Yankee). Barely into the Yankee category."

I grew up in Michigan, but have been all over the place for the last 15 years. Am I loosing my "yankee-ness"??? lol

By Monicamomof3 on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 03:51 pm:

OMG!

87% dixie!!

By Ginny~moderator on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 04:00 pm:

Mine says "barely dixie" and I have only lived in Chicago and SE Pennsylvania. Go figure. I have worked very hard to avoid having a "dialect". In Chicago and much of the northern Midwest people don't have much of an accent, but tend to speak sort of through their noses, but I've avoided that. When I moved to Philadelphia (which is right next to southern New Jersey so the dialects mix), I heard (and hear) lots of stuff which I try really hard to avoid, like:
Hoi = Hi
insteetute
bu'etin (bulletin)
down the shore (down at the shore)
carrr
and, of course, youse guys

By Marcia on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 04:18 pm:

52% (Dixie). Barely into the Dixie category.

I skipped the one about toilet papering, because I've never heard of that here.
I'm in Ontario.

By Colette on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 04:20 pm:

46% Yankee and I've been in New Hampshire and Ma all my life.

By Sunny on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 04:30 pm:

47% (Yankee). Barely into the Yankee category.

I've lived in SE PA all my life, don't you think I should have scored higher? LOL

By Kaye on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 04:45 pm:

92% (Dixie). Is General Lee your father?

I guess the party barn question got me.
And does anyone else find it funny that it says southern or texas...LOL

By Rayanne on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 04:53 pm:

62% Dixie. A definitive Southern score!

By Palmbchprincess on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 05:17 pm:

Ginny, my South Jersey great-grandmom used to say "crick" for creek, "wooder" for water (cedar wooder in that crick lol), and other such gems from that area. No matter what ocean or coast I'm talking about, I *still* say "down the shore", which makes most people look at me like I'm from Mars. The ones you mentioned seem odd to me, I keep saying Franklin Institute to see if I say it weird. LOL

By Jelygu on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 05:55 pm:

89% Dixie

I guess I expect that, living in Alabama

By Bellajoe on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 06:36 pm:

By Annie2 on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 06:59 pm:

43% barely a yankee. I grew up in MA until 25 then lived in the south. I'm going to have my kids take the test. They have lived in the south all of their lives. DH grew up in midwest, he'll take the test later.

By Mrsheidi on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 08:01 pm:

65% (Dixie). A definitive Southern score!
I grew up in Colorado and had many "Great Lakes" type answers...don't get it?

By Dawnk777 on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 08:06 pm:

39% (Yankee). A definitive Yankee.

Only 39%? I have been a Yankee all of my life! LOL!

By Yjja123 on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 09:25 pm:

55% (Dixie). Barely into the Dixie category.
Hmmm... I am not sure about the results!
I grew up in upstate NY
Lived in Orlando FL for 2 years
Lived in Chicago for 2 years
Have now lived in South Florida for 8 years
Not quite sure where Dixie comes from.
Ask my 100 % southern hubby and he will tell you I am ALL Yankee in language and attitude! :)

By Mommmie on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 09:28 pm:

93% (Dixie). Is General Lee your father?

I remember when the Party Barn opened in Austin right by UT and that was the name of the place. I think.

By Imamommyx4 on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 09:29 pm:

I'm 89% Dixie. I thought it would have been higher. I've only lived in Tennesse and Georgia. And haven't even travelled much up north. No real reason why I haven't travelled north much, just haven't. I'm southern born, southern bred, and when I die I'll be southern dead!

By Luvn29 on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 09:32 pm:

38% definite yankee. I'm 25 and was born and raised in NW Ohio and moved to SW Virginia in 7th grade. Hmmm... But it makes sense because everyone here tells me they can still tell I'm a "yankee"! hehe!

By Kateg on Saturday, February 12, 2005 - 11:10 pm:

65% (Dixie). A definitive Southern score!
I was born in Illinois & have lived in Oklahoma for a large part of my life, moving to Arkansas in the last few years. :)

By Debbie on Sunday, February 13, 2005 - 08:17 am:

65% Dixie. Even though I am in Chicago now, you can't take the Texas out of a girl!!

By Eve on Sunday, February 13, 2005 - 08:55 am:

48% Yankee (Barely into the Yankee Category) My Southern Grandmother would have been so proud!!LOL

By Phillygirl on Sunday, February 13, 2005 - 11:21 pm:

47% (Yankee). Barely into the Yankee category.

lol..people always tell me that i speak "proper"..whatever that means. The one word that bugs me when it is pronounced diferently than the way i pronounce it is "aunt"
I perfer "auwnt"..NOT "ant"...grrrr

By Children03 on Sunday, February 13, 2005 - 11:37 pm:

79% (Dixie). That is a pretty strong Southern score!

I can't believe that mine isn't higher than that because i have only lived in Florida and Georgia - mostly Georgia all of my life. If Georgia ain't Dixie I don't know what is. :)

By Kayleesmommy on Monday, February 14, 2005 - 01:21 pm:

53% Barely a dixie. I am from the northwest.

By Renantex on Monday, February 14, 2005 - 06:52 pm:

94%Dixie!!!! I got the highest score so far. Just by one point but I'm proud anyway. Maybe I don't talk proper, but it's how I was raised and I am proud to be from the panhandle of Texas! I couldn't answer the toilet paper question because we always called it "wrapping" and they didn't have that choice. And most drive thru liqour stores are just convience stores to me although I live in a dry county. Thanks for posting this link. It was fun!

By Reds9298 on Monday, February 14, 2005 - 09:38 pm:

By Palmbchprincess on Tuesday, February 15, 2005 - 03:14 pm:

Could be... I notice some of your sayings rubbed off on me! BTW, I was wondering where you had gone off to, haven't "seen" you around in a while!

By Kaleighsmommy on Tuesday, February 15, 2005 - 03:35 pm:

57% (Dixie). Barely into the Dixie category.

I thought I'd be more dixie than that. I've lived in Texas all my life. The farthest north I've ever been is Virginia.

By Dandjmom on Wednesday, February 16, 2005 - 10:55 am:

69% (dixie), but I was born adn raised here in Washington, DC. But my mom and other older family members are all from NC, so I guess I picked up from them.
