Pregnacy after vasectomy

I know this happens. And I think we had some members here that it happened to. How long after the procedure did it happen? I think I probably forgot to write down my last cycle, if not I am very late. But it peaked my curiosity. Ours was done over a year ago. He went for the initial test and was 0, he was supposed to go back for a second test and didn't. I really think this is a book keeping error, but what are the chances?

By Missmudd on Wednesday, February 9, 2005 - 01:03 pm:

I would think that it would be fairly slim. Dh had his done and had both tests come back neg. I do think that it is statistically possible but would really think that it is a book keeping error or you just missed a cycle. If you are really concerned I would go ahead and buy a pregnancy test just to make sure.

We never went back in and its been 5 years and no pregnancy yet..LOL :)I think your chances may be very slim.

I dont know.. I would think in a yrs time it would be ok. My husband had his done in Oct, and had his final check yesterday(they did 2 checks)and everything was AOK.

If you are that worried, I would get a pregnancy test. Anything is possible, but I think that your chances are slim.

My dad had one when he was about 30 and then POOF, he was a dad again at 53. I would get him rechecked, just in case. And, get one of those digital pregnancy tests.

Well, if you ask Jazzermom or Bobbie, they'd tell you to get it rechecked! lol Seriously, if you're in doubt, get a pregnancy test. My dh had one about 4 years ago now and never went back to have it checked. So far so good for us. For me, I figure if I were to get pregnant at this point, then God wants me to have another child. I can't imagine that happening, but that's just mho. (dh on the other hand would have a stroke! lol) Good luck, either way. :)

So why dont the men go back and get it rechecked? I guess I dont understand that, if you are getting the procedure so as not to get pregnant. When I went to my ob/gyn about 10 weeks after Faith was born I had told her my dh had it done about 2 weeks prior. She said to make sure that we used another form of bc until the rechecks came back negative or whatever else they call it. SHe said she has seen too many post Vasectomy babies because the men never had it rechecked and people "assumed" everything was AOK

If I am I also think it is God's will. I really think it is a bookkeeping issue. My dh went it for a check at 4 weeks and he checked out fine. His docter also wanted 12 week sample. It seemed pointless to go back, no sperm means no sperm right? I will probably wait another week or two before I worry or test, it doesn't really make a difference.

By Annie2 on Wednesday, February 9, 2005 - 06:29 pm:

My dh had one 7 years ago. No surprises thus far. :)

MY dh also never went back for his check. He told me the way the dr. snipped and cauterized his unit there was not a chance in the world of him getting me pregnant again.

I had a baby moment yesterday though. I get them every once in a while. :)

I think your chances are slim, but not impossible. Keep us posted. :)

In the guys defense, it is kind of embarrasing submiting that sample, and honestly I think some men would have a very difficult time getting a sample in the doctors office if you get my drift. :)

By Melanie on Wednesday, February 9, 2005 - 07:10 pm:

All I can say is I am so glad dh went and got checked. He had to go through the procedure a second time. But I am glad we found out the way we did!

OP, I would think the possibility is incredibly slim since he did get checked out once. It's always possible, of course, but not likely.

By Jackie on Wednesday, February 9, 2005 - 08:11 pm:

I know its embarassing to have to be checked for this sort of thing LOL...but its be embarassed, or end up possibly pregnant.

My girls are 7 years old. DH had had the vasectomy 5 years prior to my conception. He went in had the first test done and still had sperm. They told him to bring another sample back and he decided he wasn't going to do it and I honestly didn't care if he did or not. Like stated above you assume the procedure is done right and the rest is up to Gods will. And in our case it was His will times 2. I wouldn't change a thing... and since I have given birth to the girls I have met several women that had a V baby. Which is why you sign a paper when you have the procedure done that states that you have been made aware that the procedure has a fail rate and as slim as that percent is it still happens. Doctors are only human... A lot of the procedures they perform fail, not just in the case of the big V, so why should it be any different?

My DH didn't test sperm free until 4 mos. after his V. He went back for testing monthly until he was clear. *I* took the samples in myself and waited for the results, so it's not something they have to do at the office. IE: Not embarrassing. The last time I took a sample in the doctor said, "Your DH is now officially shooting blanks." LOL! Then I asked, "Should he come in for further testing in the future?" He replied, while chuckling, "I usually don't see my V patients again once they test sperm free, UNLESS their wife's period is late." Of course I raised my eyebrows at that and asked, "What are the chances of pregnancy?" He said, "Slim." Then he gave me a ratio but I can't remember exactly what it was, but definitely slim. If I get pregnant at this point we will consider it God's will. (Please, NO.) :)

My hubby's doc had him come in not is so many weeks, but after so many ejaculations. WE took ours to a lab to, but I was way to embarrassed to have to carry THAT!
