Starting a garden this year

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive February 2005: Starting a garden this year

I really want to start a garden this year with my 4 1/2 year old. I can't wait for all of the great veggies!! I am however, scared to death of the thought of snakes when I am working in the garden. We live next to a lake, so we usually have more snakes than the norm.

Any ideas?????
I would also love any general pointers!!

I hate snakes too. I don't have any advice on how to get rid of them, but I tend to bang around a bit when I am out there so they leave. I ran up beside a HUGE snake last summer with the lawn mower and scared the life out of me.

TRY THIS

Thanks Bea for the link to Snakeaway. A friend of mine said today that she had tried it around the perimeter of her garden, but did not check the area well before putting it down. She actually trapped 2 snakes inside the garden - HAHA! Who would've thought!
My husband also heard today to line the perimeter with old frazzled, prickly rope and supposedly the snakes won't crawl over it.

Bea, that is cool. I've never heard of it. I will definately be checking that out.
