Trigl., Cholestrol Health questions

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive February 2005: Trigl., Cholestrol Health questions

Hello everyone,

I have been viewing this board for quite a while, and this is my firt post. I remember reading a post regarding cholestrol, and I am hoping someone can educate me. Last June, we found that dh (33yr old) has high triglicerites (spell?). He was prescribed meds., which he only took for two months as a trial period. Well, his triglicerites are now normal but his cholestrol is high (>200). But, that is not as bad as his HDL and LDL levels which are apparently of concern to the doc.

First of all, I don't understand why triglicerites went down and cholestrol went up while on this medicine. It seems to have fixed one thing and broken another. Someone, please clarify my confusion. I am against dh taking drugs. He is at least 20lbs overweight even though he excercises. He is taking fish oil caplets, although not regularly as would like.

Thank you all.

How high over 200 is he? What are his hdl and his ldl readings?

By Missmudd on Monday, January 31, 2005 - 03:38 pm:

I have cholesterol over 200 but my good cholesterol way out numbered the bad cholesterol. So even tho my overall cholesterol was over the 200 a good precent of it was the good stuff we wanted to keep and not the bad stuff that I wanted gone. This is probably the case with your dh. The bad stuff dropped and the good stuff went up putting him over the 200 mark. I would ask for an explaination from his doc.

How is his blood pressure and fasting blood glucose? These are often seen together with elevated tryglycerides.

I also agree with the previous poster that you can't tell just by looking at total cholesterol, you need to know the hdl and ldl values.

Thank you for responding. His cholesterol is ~213, but it's the bad "stuff" that is high. Unfortunately, I do not have the lab report, which I will get this Thurs. when my dh sees the doc. I do not remember his blood pressure being high, I will check. Also for all the blood work, he fasted only 8hrs. I am not sure that it was the comprehensive fasting test. I will have more concrete numbers on Thurs. I guess I am looking for good questions to ask, like John and others mentioned already.

Hi,

I have previously written regarding my dh's high cholesterol. Here are the results from lab work:

triglycerides are 124, which are normal now due to the med he had used
cholesterol is 214, which is borderline high
LDL is 148, which is fine
HDL is 41, which is somewhat high
CRP factor is 1.2, which is good

The doc prescribed natural Gugulipid herb. Anyone have experience with this "natural" medication? He would still have his liver checked every 3 months. He is excercising and eating much healthier, minus the snacks LOL. Any comments and recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Oops, I've made mistake.

LDL at 148 is borderline high (that's the bad one)

It's the one that went up along with HDL (but, it's the good one) causing cholesterol high.
