I'm fed up with our public school system

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive January 2005: I'm fed up with our public school system
By Mommyof4 on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 11:47 pm:

This time last your our school district decided to do some boundary changes and split the elementary school that my kids go to so that kids living in one part of the attendance area go to one middle school and those living in the other part of the elementary attendance area go to a different middle school. Many of the parents had a lot of complaints about this and fough the school board as all year long the elementary had been preparing all the 5th graders for what school was going to be like at S Middle School and then to change it for what was going to be a total of 18 kids because of the grandfathering clause (if you had a sib that went or is going to S middle school then you could go as well) was just not fair for those kids. So the board agreed that the change would be coming too late in the year and so the boundary change would be in effect for the 2005-2006 school year and our 5th graders (now 6th graders) would not be affected by this. Tonight I was browsing around the S school site and what do I find but a notice on the bottom of the page that says that if you live in the area that was affected by the boundary change and currently attend S middle school you will need to have your parents complete a Permit request to allow you to attend there next year AND this permit needed to be in the District Office by Jan 5th. I asked dd when they sent this information home,I assumed that it had been hanging out in her bookbag for weeks or months and she claimed she didnt know anything about it. I called the mom of one of her friends who lives in our neighborhood to ask when she turned in her request and she had NO idea what I was talking about. Apparently they did not notify us other than putting a notice on the very bottom of their web page. While most people have internet access there are those people who do not...the mom I called is one of them. I am furious our school district's web site says that any requests received after 1/5 will automatically be DENIED. This will mean that she will have to move to another school next year. If this was their ultimate plan then I wish they had let us know this last year and I would have sent her to the school that is not in our attendance area so that she wouldn't have to change AGAIN. GRRRRRR

I don't think it's a done deal. Get together with some of the parents and confront the school district maybe?

I would defintely fill out the letter, then deliever it in person. Then ask, how was I supposed to know that i needed this form? I know we have to publically list certain information, which means posted at the school or printed in the paper. I would still try.

I'm sure if you turned it in now, they would oblige. Then call and call and call until you KNOW she is staying at that school. Get a name and document it.

Yeah, be a real squeaky wheel, and make sure that all the other parents are too, jump up and down and throw a fit if necessary. Write a letter to your newspaper.

PS- If you want anything done at a school, ALWAYS file a complaint with the school board. Works like a charm, every time.
