Not a brag but got new furniture

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive January 2005: Not a brag but got new furniture
By Trisa on Friday, January 21, 2005 - 09:38 am:

I am so happy with it. It came at 8:30
this morning. I don't like to tell family
because some would feel I was bragging.
It has been a long time since I had new.
I am not one for debt and for buying now
payin later so I saved and was able to buy
the entire set, end tables and coffee table
included and pay cash. And this was not even from tax money. Didn't do taxes yet. It feels so
good when you save for something and are
finally able to get it. Now if I could only keep the dog off of it! What a spoiled brat!

By Kate on Friday, January 21, 2005 - 09:40 am:

Cool! What did you get? You didn't say!!!! I assume you got couches and chairs, because you mentioned end tables and coffee table as 'included'.

What's it look like? Is it living room or family room furniture? What did you do with your old set? Good for you!! Enjoy it!

By My2cuties on Friday, January 21, 2005 - 09:51 am:

Good for you!!! Glad you were able to get something you really wanted and didn't have to go in debt for it!!

By Tunnia on Friday, January 21, 2005 - 09:53 am:

Isn't new furniture nice? We just bought new furniture a couple of weeks ago and we love it. Our living room looks totally different now. Enjoy!:)

By Jelygu on Friday, January 21, 2005 - 10:00 am:

That is awesome. Enjoy your new furniture! It is great that you saved for it instead of financing it.

By Trisa on Friday, January 21, 2005 - 10:10 am:

Its navy and I love it!
We put our old funiture in the family room.
I had wanted something in more
of a country blue but they didn't have anything
in that color I liked. I am picky about the fabric
as some tend to get those little lint balls
all over them. My mom had a set like that and hated it for that very reason. The one I picked is like a corderoy ( sp?) Now if only we could get new carpet. Does anyone have Berber carpet?
I have always liked how it looks and have heard it wears well.

By Boxzgrl on Friday, January 21, 2005 - 10:43 am:

Good luck with your new furniture and congrats! DH and I had navy blue corduroy couches when we first married and my Huskys hair stuck to it horribly. I had to vacuum my couches every day.... what a pain in my back, literally! But I love the country blue look as well. WE NEED PICS, lol! :)

By Trisa on Friday, January 21, 2005 - 10:53 am:

Yes I hear you!
I vacuum everyday because of my dog.
He is a black Border Collie.
His black hair didn't really show up on
my old sofa. It was a lighter blue.
I am going to pick up a lint brush today
maybe it will help.

By Mrsheidi on Friday, January 21, 2005 - 10:54 am:

We love our berber carpet! Feels good on bare feet (I HATE wearing shoes) CONGRATS on the new furniture!

By Karen~moderator on Friday, January 21, 2005 - 12:14 pm:

Congrats! DEFINITELY want to see pics!

By Cat on Friday, January 21, 2005 - 12:15 pm:

New furniture is great, isn't it? That was our Christmas present to ourselves this year and we love it! Enjoy. :)

By Trisa on Friday, January 21, 2005 - 01:21 pm:

Heidi what color carpet did you have?

By Kaye on Friday, January 21, 2005 - 09:53 pm:

LOL heidi, I was going to say I hated our berber carpet because it was so hard on my feet!

By Kernkate on Friday, January 21, 2005 - 10:19 pm:

I have had Berber carpet for 4 years now and I love it. So easy to clean and I love the feel of it on my feet.

By Kernkate on Friday, January 21, 2005 - 10:23 pm:

Oh Trisa sorry to get off the original subject with the berber carpet:) I know the feeling of new furniture. We just got a new sectional about 2 months ago and am so happy. Feels like a whole new room!!! Dog is not allowed on ours. Only because DH has allergies.

By Trisa on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 12:55 pm:

my dog is 11 and 1/2 so I cant break him of his old habit. He wont be around much longer anyway I fear so Im not fighting him on it.

By Audreyj on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 02:00 pm:

CONGRATULATIONS on the new furniture. I like new furniture but I like new carpet even more, makes the whole house feel new doesn't it?

Now, I am going to give you a little feedback on Berber carpet. We got Berber carpet in our "new to us" fixer upper 3 years ago and we were so excited because it was (WAS) beautiful. However, we were not aware that it has to be "babied" and we have two small children, a cat and two dogs. The berber carpet now has several "runs" in it and will probably be replaced in another 2 years. We have had to cover it with rugs and such. If I had it to "do over" I would have either made strict rules with it (no shoes in the house, no pets in the living area, etc.) or I would have just bought a dark color nylon pile (cheaper) or something that like that would "wear" a little better and saved the Berber for when the children were older. Just my experience. But now I am aware that if I want Berber carpet, I better make arrangements to treat it gently! :-) AJ

By Mrsheidi on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 06:47 pm:

We got a neutral color...nothing too outlandish. And, for some reason, I personally think it's easier to get stains out of the carpet and it doesn't change the texture of it after a spill. JMHO

By Vicki on Saturday, January 22, 2005 - 06:59 pm:

Wow, I am amazed that you had problems with a berber carpet! We have had berber for about 7 years (bought it new in 2 different houses) and that was with a toddler and 2 dogs and a cat and no problems at all!! We have always had kind of a no shoes in the house policy, but other than that, I wouldn't say that we have ever babied it by any means. We did buy a very high quality though. I am not sure if that would be the difference or not, but there is a very tight berber and then looser..... but anyway.. I love berber and wouldn't ever hesitate to buy it again!!

By Trisa on Sunday, January 23, 2005 - 10:04 am:

Gee you guys are making it a hard choice!
Im sure the carpet people could tell you
what is a better berber to buy.

By Yjja123 on Sunday, January 23, 2005 - 02:38 pm:

I had an expensive Berber and it ran also. I think the cats may have pulled it. Not sure as I never caught them doing it.
We just bought new furniture this week too. We bought a solid Oak entertainment center (2 glass door bookcases with a top that arches over big screen TV) and an oak desk. It gets delivered tomorrow. I am so excited. New furniture is exciting! Enjoy yours.

By Trisa on Sunday, January 23, 2005 - 03:00 pm:

Yvonne that sounds like a nice
entertainment center! I was just thinking yesterday that ours doesn't match our new end tables and coffee tables. Gee you get a few news things then look around and say hey this doesn't match this and that. No wonder men don't care if we ever get new stuff. It always turns into more! lol

By Yjja123 on Sunday, January 23, 2005 - 06:55 pm:

Trisa, We bought it at an unfinished furniture store. I will be staining them. My hubby dragged me to a ton of furniture stores and none of them had solid wood furniture. I refuse to buy anything not real wood and it is really hard to find that anymore. As far as the matching thing---we are already discussing that. My dining set is dark wood and I am not a fan of dark wood. We are hoping our tax return will be enough to get a new (actually an antique one) set in oak. Like you we do not charge so will need to either save up or use tax return.

By Conni on Monday, January 24, 2005 - 08:23 am:

Trisa, I didnt read all the posts but wanted to first congratulate you on your new furniture!! woohoo! I know you are lovin it.

Second I wanted to say that I have had Berber in 3 houses now. The first 2 houses we bought contractors grade berber. I didnte really care for it-- it did run. I think I caught it when I was moving a bed one day or something. I think it can be repaired tho! I never looked into it.
When we built this house we put in a med-hi grade of *cut* berber and I LOVE it. I wish I would have gotten a darker color (due to living with 4 guys, now we have 3 dogs and 1 cat that are all in he house at some point in every week almost! lol)... We do *not* allow food/drinks on our carpet-- but somehow it still gets there. lol We recently got a new puppy that has really done a number on the carpet and I am sure some pee has soaked thru to the pad. I cant get all the spots clean. I will have it steamcleaned in another month or two and then I think this summer I am goin to replace it. I dont think I will do carpet in my living room again if I can talk dh into just bringing the wood floors on across the living room. Then I will get a big area rug. I will get the same kind of cut berber in my bdrm tho. (maybe a darker color tho!) Ours is a light neutral.

Good luck and I would suggest going to a reputable carpet place. They will tell you everything you need to know about the diff grades of carpet.

By Kaye on Monday, January 24, 2005 - 08:35 am:

What I didn't like about my berber is I am barefoot all the time and it just was hard on my feet (not as bad as tile though). We hav had berber in two houses with lots of pets and small kids and have not had an issue with running. I think I would ask that when you buy. The other thing about berber is this, it is easy to clean, but you usually can't tell when it is dirty either. So if always looks okay maybe even good. But with regular carpet when you vacuum it just looks so much cleaner in my opinion.
