Broken tailbone?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive January 2005: Broken tailbone?
By Colette on Wednesday, January 19, 2005 - 09:43 pm:

My oldest dd got knocked down today at school (on accident) and she is still in quite a bit of pain 7 hours later. Hurts to walk, lay down, basically move in any direction. I think she may have broken her tailbone. She is freaking out about having a male dr look at her behind. There are no female drs in this office. Any ideas of suggestions? anyone btdt? She is 13.

Oh Colette, I feel for your DD, I broke mine when I was 12. She will need an x-ray. There was not much they could do for me way back when. The doctor told me to bring a pillow to school and gave me a box of pain killers. I'm not sure if things have changed since then, I hope they have. My only suggestion would be to ask your DD if she would be comfortable with a nurse. Perhaps the nurse could do the intial exam just to make her more comfortable and then have the doctor come in.

Yep. I fell down at church when I was a *younger* 30. LOL. It was really icy and it hurt like you know what.

I went and got xrayed and got the pain killers too. Not much else they can do.

Hugs to her, because I remember.

Ouch! I got kicked in the tailbone when I was a kid by another kid. Hurt for months! I was too embarrassed to tell my mom. Still hurts on occasion. The male doc won't have to look at her behind because (ditto heaven tree) the only way to know is to do an xray. Hugs to her and you. Give her some Motrine.

Ditto Heaven - I fractured mine when I was 14, fell out of a tree.....

By Colette on Thursday, January 20, 2005 - 05:45 am:

Thanks, she's still in a lot of pain. It must be really bad, because now she is willing to see the male dr.

I remember fracturing mine when I was about 13, I was pushed while I was ice skating. I can still remember the pain! Did she take any pain relievers?
Hope she is willing to go to the doctors to have it checked.
Keep us posted.

Did any of you that had this done actually have to get a rectal examination? I've been looking at treatment/diagnosis for this online and that's one of the things that keeps popping up. She is going to totally freak if that happens.

By Heaventree on Thursday, January 20, 2005 - 08:29 am:

No rectal exam, can't see how that's necessary. An xray should tell it all. Besides a rectal exam will hurt. It' very painful, I still have problems today if I'm slightly overweight, or of course when I was pregnant.

thanks, I was kind of panicing for her when I read about that.

I broke my tailbone in 6th grade. I fell down while roller skating. I did not have a rectal exam!! All they did was take an x-ray. They gave me pain med. and that was it.

My dd fell off of our retaining wall, it was at the edge of our property, and she came down on her tail bone, she was in so much pain. I got her to lay down on the couch and she would not move the pain was so bad and would scream if you tryed to move her. I called the ambulance and we went to the hospital. Right away the nurses got a pee sample,The doctor examined her and said he seen nothing wrong , when he looked at the exrays. He took me aside and said that he felt she was lying!!!! I told him if my daughter was not hurt she would be running around! HE was going to tell us to go home and I said well did you even look at the urine sample?? he said oh was their one taken? So off he went and he came back sheepishly and said oh I guess she wasn't faking she has blood in her urine. The blood in the urine was an idication that in the fall she hurt her kidney's. The doctor prescribed some strong tylenyol, after about 1/2 she started moving around once the pain eased up a bit, time was the only thing to mend.
I think you should take her to emergencey and get thoses exray's you really do need to find out. Tell her you will be standing right their. I always told my girls that they will eventually get over that kind of shyness , especially when they start having children as several people end up looking at your back side. The doctor ( if male) should have a nurse in the room when any exam is done. I am sorry she is in so much pain , when seeing your post it brings back all thoses scary feelings for me, of when my dd fell and the ambulance, and the pain. Go to the doctor as soon as possible, my thoughts are with you, let us know how she is :( p.s see if they will do the urine sample

We just got back. It is not broken, just severely bruised. Rx is alternating ice/heat and ibuprofen.

By Kernkate on Thursday, January 20, 2005 - 12:14 pm:

Glad to hear its not broken or fractured. Hope she is feeling better soon.

I did that, many years ago, sliding on my butt down a snowy slope to watch a ski meet, and hitting a rock in a most unstrategic place. I recall spending almost a week on my stomach, alternating ice and heat and whining.

By Colette on Thursday, January 20, 2005 - 01:35 pm:

she's got the whining down pat.

By Janet on Thursday, January 20, 2005 - 02:18 pm:

Good! Broken tailbones take forever to heal, and not much can be done to help. So glad it's just bruised, although that is also very painful. :( BTW, teenagers are PROS at whining! LOL

By Robyn on Thursday, January 20, 2005 - 02:39 pm:

My tailbone was fractured during the delivery of my daughter...the doctors heard the crack & told me...all was fine until the epidural wore off...then 4 months of pain, was not able to sit or lay down on my behind for 4 months without so much pain, walking hurt, laughing hurt...still have pain if I sit for long car rides etc. It's been 18 months...the pain is still vivid in my memory. I feel for your daughter. Hugs.

By Annie2 on Thursday, January 20, 2005 - 03:37 pm:

Glad to hear it is not broken. Hoping for a speedy recovery!
