Breathing a sigh of relief for Mom & Dad!

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive January 2005: Breathing a sigh of relief for Mom & Dad!
By Janet on Friday, January 7, 2005 - 09:56 am:

My parents are in their mid-80s, and Dad's homebound with medical problems... they are in the middle of the Great Kansas Power Failure, and have been without electricity in freezing weather for three days. They have a fireplace, but were running low on wood, and my brother (Colorado), sister (trapped in her own ice storm in KC), and me (Illinois) have been going crazy, trying to think of what to do. The power company has told us it may be next Thursday before power is restored. Then, an epiphany! My nephew (Texas) makes some phone calls and finds a suite at an extended-stay inn (rooms are scarce right now) and we managed to convince my VERY stubborn parents that they HAD to go for their own safety. Finally, yesterday, my neice (Wichita) and her husband got them packed and moved, bought them groceries for their little kitchenette, and everyone is warm and safe!!! YAY!!! I talked to Dad last night and he was so upbeat, I couldn't believe it. They were almost giddy with being somewhere warm, where they could be catered to... and the rest of us were finally able to sleep last night! It's such a dire situation, though... I'm reading of several elderly people who have died because of running generators or CO2 poisoning, or exposure... Thank God the temps will go up a little this weekend.

Oh goodness, I'm so glad that they are somewhere safe.

Great idea! I'm glad this has turned into sort of a "mini-vacation" for them!

I had no idea about the power outage!! I'm glad they are safe and warm, that's an incredibly dangerous situation!!

Wow, I'm glad you could figure something out and they will sleep comfortably tonight. You must have been so worried!

Same issues here in Ohio. My sister has been with out power since Wednesday and they are saying possible next Friday before they will have power again. Many of our counties are under water, mine included. Bad bad storm...

Glad they are safe.....
