Just once a week to start.
Afetr all family comes first. But I am
excited to help out. I will be helping out
at a retirement home. This place is sooo fancy!
It even has an indoor pool, a woodshop, 2 weight rooms, an indoor garden with bird and nature sounds. Just really really nice! I will be visiting with some of the poor people who NEVER
get visits from family or anyone for that matter.
I wil be helping with activities and helping
wheel people to lunch or to the bank, post office, ice cream shop ect. Yes this place has all that stuff. They must pay dear to live in a place like this. I will also help on the memory support area. My mother in law owns a personal care home and I have seen how so many old people
just have no one to talk to. Hey we are ALL going to be old one day. You can learn alot from an older person and they deserve a visit and a friend.

and FORGOT I was still in the photo area!
Does anyone know If someone can move it
to the general banter?? So sorry!! What a dummy I am!!

That's a wonderful thing to do. You are right, so many elders are in nursing homes or retirement homes and their families just seem to forget all about them.

When Jen was younger and taking dance class, twice a year they would go and put on exhibitions for the residents in a nursing home in our area. At Easter they would bring them Easter baskets.

It's amazing what a little attention does for their moral.

Kudos to you!

One of the schools here has each class adopt a grandparent from a nearby rest home for the year and they make cards, go for visits, put on little class plays, etc. for their grandparent and some of the other residents. I think it is such a great way for the kids to get close to an older person. I wish I was more comfortable with older people. Good for you, Trisa!

Thats great Trisa.I love to be with elderly people. They tell great stories.
They will be so grateful for your help ,it will be a very rewarding volunteering experience for you ,and you are setting a great example for your children.
Let us know how it goes . .

You are allowed to take your
kids for a visit. They just love to see them!
I want to take both of mine once in awhile.
I want my son to see that they are people to
and need love just as much as everyone else.

My dh and I do quite a bit of volunteering and I think it is wonderful that you are going to volunteer at the nursing home. So few people are actually willing to donate their time. The nursing home staff and residents will really appreciate your time because the staff does not have the time to spend just chatting and visiting with each resident and the residents still need human interaction and sadly so many of them have families that don't meet that need.

I would like to encourage you to involve your children! Have them go with you to visit and talk to the residents and have them make cards and/or draw pictures. Volunteering is a wonderful way to teach your children the satisfaction of doing something for the good of others without getting anything in return, except the good feeling of knowing you made a difference. It's also a great way to spend time as a family. Our children volunteer right beside us and have since our oldest was 2yo. Within the last year our oldest, who is now 8, has started branching out on her own and volunteering in areas that interest her. It really makes us proud to see her desire to perform community services just because she feels good about herself because she did something that helped someone or something else.

That is just so great!!
You really should be proud.
It just makes you feel so good to
help others. And you have taught them
to respect older people at a young age as well.
