What does your family call it?

Moms View Message Board: General Discussion Archive: Archive January 2005: What does your family call it?
By Tink on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 01:52 pm:

When I was growing up, we were taught to call our private areas by their correct names and I always hated calling it a "vagina". I know have two girls and a boy and still don't know what to call everything! LOL My son has a "pee-pee" but my girls just have a "front bottom". My older two do know the correct name for it. I'm just wondering how other families refer to that area, especially for little girls. (Why is EVERYTHING easier with boys?!?!)

By Cybermommyx4 on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 01:56 pm:

The children *know* the anatomically correct names for their body parts, but in general reference we have "privates" and the boys have "winkies"....something the pediatrician always called them, and it kind of stuck :)

By Mommmie on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 01:58 pm:

Those are your "personals!"

Course everyone knows the real names, but it's much more entertaining to think of other words.

By Karen~moderator on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 02:03 pm:

My kids were taught the proper terms as well, but when they were younger they referred to them as their *privates*.

By Bea on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 02:06 pm:

I taught my boys to use the anatomic word for their genitals. I never believed in cute synonyms.

By Missmudd on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 02:14 pm:

Well for our guys it has always been "boy bits". If we had had a little girl it probably been "girl bits". I think that I have used "girl bits" in referance to myself to DH as in "not tonight, the girl bits are out of order" :)

By Colette on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 02:14 pm:

Ditto Bea.

By Trisa on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 02:19 pm:

My kids say Privates as well.

By Bellajoe on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 02:20 pm:

I have thought them the correct terms, but i doubt they remember them. We refer to both boy and girl parts as "pee pee" . I just have visions of my ds saying loudly in a store "my penis itches" or something like that! I guess i'd rather hear a kid say "pee pee".

By Juli4 on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 02:36 pm:

My oldest is three and we have 3 girls so we call it her bottom or front bottom. I think people would be somewhat offended if she said vagina at church or something like that. When she is a little older we will teach her more but like most things it works for right now.

By Happynerdmom on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 02:41 pm:

We pretty much use the anatomical words, or refer to them as "privates," especially for dd. As for ds, anything can be used as a name for a penis to an 11-year-old boy! (And he's had some creative ones!LOL) This post reminded me of when I was little, though. My grandma called the vagina your "you-know." As in, make sure to wash your "you-know." I thought it was hysterical as a kid when the game "Uno" came out, because we pronounced it the same as my grandma's word for our vagina!:)

By Tunnia on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 02:43 pm:

My dd knows the correct terminology, but prefers to use the words "private parts". Since that's what she is comfortable with, that's what we use with her. My ds, however prefers to use the words "penis" and "testicles" so that's what we use when speaking with him. I prefer the correct terminology because to me the words "penis" or "vagina" are no different than the words "thumb" or "nose". They are simply the names of body parts. I have a friend who cringes when she hears my ds say "penis". She thinks it sounds dirty coming from a child.

By Cat on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 02:49 pm:

My kids learned and have always used the correct names for both sexes. When I was little my mom used "Pee-er" for both. lol

Tunnia, your friend cringing when she hears your ds say "penis" reminded me of the time I was at a friend's house and her then 3yo dd said "coochie" for vagina. Then, I cringed! lol

By My2cuties on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 03:08 pm:

My 3 year old really doesn't talk about her vagina. But when it is bothering her she calls it a Vagina. I have taught her that is what it is, and told her that some people call it different things. My sisters kids call it a hootie (don't ask me why, I do not know). Everyone is different.

I remember a while back when Katelyn was first learning how to wipe properly (around age 2.5)and she got a uti..she told my mom her "agina" was hurting, and my mom almost passed out and told me that was vulgar. I said that is Correct, not vulgar! So my mom had her saying it was her "shrek", you could imagine how upset I was.

By Boxzgrl on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 03:17 pm:

Pee-pee

If she sees DH she says "Eeewww" I suppose we should change that soon, lol!

By Ginny~moderator on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 03:27 pm:

Private parts sounds good to me. A lot of people are uncomfortable with the "correct" medical terms. If you are talking about a problem, you can always say - where you urinate, or where you have a bowel movement (yes, I know, "correct" terms). Personally, I prefer and preferred using the correct terms. I think using terms like "winkie" and other euphemisms may be OK for kids but those terms often continue into adulthood, which is not really OK (imo). At my last job the secretary next to me (a wonderful woman), would say she had to "go peepees" - she's 40 this year, for pete's sake. Why can't she just go to the bathroom?

By Insaneusmcwife on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 03:29 pm:

Ds calls his nutz or doinkie and dd calls it her pee pee. Those are names they came up with.

By Palmbchprincess on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 03:34 pm:

We all knew the correct terms, but we called them privates. My girl cousins called it a "peach", and if I can remember correctly the boys called it a ding-a-ling. My grandmom calls it a pee-er for boys, funny but I don't know what she calls a vagina! **blushing** Since we've been potty training we've called it a weiner and a hoo-hah. We've told them both the real names, but I'm constantly telling Shane to stop pulling at his, and I really dislike the idea of saying penis 15 times a day!

By Yjja123 on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 03:51 pm:

We use correct terms.

By Andi on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 05:09 pm:

We use the correct terms.

When I was taking some Child Development classes in College they made it very clear that the correct term should be used incase there was ever a problem with sexual abuse. If you child ever had to say where they were touched the proper terms being used makes it easier to prosecute the offender.

I know that isn't a very pleasant thought but that is why I always use the correct term.

By Fionadeassis on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 05:17 pm:

We use Penis and Vagina.......me and my sister called our vaginas...'foo foos'...I am sure my mom made that up...she was never very comfy talking about stuff like that........my friends sister gets her daughter to call it her 'peachy' I don't know why but it bugs me...LOL...

This hilarious woman I know calls it her 'cracker'....That makes me laugh for some reason...maybe the way she says it......

But I would rather hear a small child use the correct term....though I don't mind 'peepee'...

I just can't stand 'peachy' though...it just creeps me out....

By Emily7 on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 05:19 pm:

My 2 year old calls his penis a penis. I also think privates are okay.

By Rayanne on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 05:24 pm:

We call DD's a pee-pee for now. My mom used to call mine a new-new.

By Imamommyx4 on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 06:01 pm:

Girls have a bottom and boys have a winkie. But we refer to them as privates, too.

By Vdubprincess on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 06:13 pm:

we always said, privates or pee-pee, boy or girl. my daughter is only 11 months old. not sure what we will call it. I hate the idea of using the real words just sounds awful. I will teach her the real words when she is older.

By Marcia on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 06:34 pm:

We use the real words or "privates" with our girls. Growing up, it was always privates.

By Jelygu on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 06:45 pm:

We say pee-pee now, but I want Christopher to know the correct term, and I don't want him to think it is a bad word.
When I was younger we said tootie for girls... that sounds horrible to me!

By Karen~moderator on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 06:56 pm:

I always believed in teaching mine the proper term - and I did. However, it's rare for a young child to use them - for one, they don't always remember them, and for another thing, they *do* sound sort of strange.

Even now, Jen refuses to say *vagina*. She has a total aversion to the word. She calls it her *gary* - and you wouldn't believe how *that* nickname came about!

By Jewlz on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 07:14 pm:

my daughter calls hers "hoochie"son called his a pee pee tho they knew the proper name this is just the more public name we used. My step daughter did at age 4 yell out in mass that daddy was squeezin her so tight her hoochie hurt. talk about being embarassed.

By Laurazee on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 08:17 pm:

Proper name or "pee pee" here for male parts.

I usually refer to mine as privates. When I was 11, I remember getting really worried when I misread the word "pubic" as "pubLic" . For the longest time, I was baffled (and nervous) over this apparent discrepancy.

Karen, I am dying to know how one comes up with "Gary" as a euphemism. My ds calls all snails "garys" after Spongebob's pet snail, so that's what the term brings to mind!

By Paulas on Wednesday, January 5, 2005 - 10:52 pm:

We use the proper words because of what Andi mentioned. When I was teaching years ago, before I had kids, I had a student tell me ber buggie was hurt and I didn't know what she was referring to. Come to find out, she was referring to her vagina. She had wore a dress to school and had fallen and hurt herself. Could have been worse. From that point I always said when I had kids they would use the correct terms.

By Mrse on Thursday, January 6, 2005 - 12:08 am:

All three of my girls have "privates" My friends little girl (3) calls it hoo hoo .

By Karen~moderator on Thursday, January 6, 2005 - 07:54 am:

Laura, Jules used to have a cat named *Gary*, and.....well......think of the *other* name for that particular body part (which Jen would NEVER call it!), and since she hates the word *vagina*, she calls it a Gary.

By Happynerdmom on Thursday, January 6, 2005 - 08:56 am:

LOL, Karen!!

By Janet on Thursday, January 6, 2005 - 09:47 am:

Of course, to be *absolutely* correct, it wouldn't be a vagina (which is inside), but a vulva, clitoris, etc.... LOL In any case, we always used "bottom" and "pee-pee." Both girls (14 and 9) now use the correct terms, but I can't tell you when the change was made. It just happened.

By Breann on Thursday, January 6, 2005 - 10:06 am:

We use the correct terms for the reasons that Andi explained.

By Breann on Thursday, January 6, 2005 - 10:08 am:

By Eve on Thursday, January 6, 2005 - 10:22 am:

LOL, Karen!!

Ditto Andi.:)

By Kaye on Thursday, January 6, 2005 - 10:48 am:

I have the same reasons for Andi. SAd world. my children also say privates. My daughter more than my sons. My middle son doesn't usually talk about, my youngest, Oh my gosh, does he have an issue! He has some sensory problems, he is always touching his, I always say do you need to go potty? HIs answer used to be no, but one day said very loudly, NO my PENIS itches, it is touching my scrotum and I don't like that. Geesh!

By Debbie on Thursday, January 6, 2005 - 11:48 am:

My boys know the correct term is penis. However, they usually call it their privates, which is fine with me. My youngest(age 4) will also call it his pee-pee.

By Trina~moderator on Thursday, January 6, 2005 - 12:09 pm:

Correct terms here for the same reasons Andi mentioned. While teaching I attended a seminar on child abuse and this was strongly stressed. An example given was when a Kindergarten girl told her teacher someone was touching her "cupcake". Understandably, the teacher thought she was referring to a snack. Later it was discovered that this child was trying to communicate that an adult in her life was inappropriately fondling her. If she had used the correct terms there would have been NO questions as to what she was trying to say. I cringe just thinking about how many more times she was abused before people knew the truth. :(

I also believe using pet names for private parts sends a message to the child that privates are dirty or something to be embarrassed about. My son has a penis just like he has a nose and two eyes. DD has a vulva just like she has two elbows and knees. They are body parts, which are a fact of life, and each one has a proper name.

Last year while visiting my parents my kids were playing catch in the back yard. DS missed a catch and caught the ball in his groin. He said, "OW! the ball hit my penis!" My father was angry with ME. "WHY did you teach him that term?!" I said matter-of-factly, "That's what it's called." He shook his head in disgust. Oh well, sorry Dad. LOL!

By Karen~moderator on Thursday, January 6, 2005 - 03:51 pm:

Wow! My X SIL and her S.O. taught her DS to call his penis by the shortened form of the name *Richard* - you all know what I mean. I know I've posted about this before. I was horrified - this 3 y/o was going around saying that! I asked them WHY they did that and they said *he's going to call it that anyway when he's older*. Uhhhhhhhhhhh what happened to setting an example????? I just don't get that.

Madison knows the proper terms and when she couldn't pronounce it correctly, she told me she had a hiney and a giney. LOL

By Hillsmum on Friday, January 7, 2005 - 03:28 am:

Isn't this a funny subject?
At home we call it privates, or when we're joking around, it's bottom and front bottom. At school the kids are made to say the correct names, it's good kids know what their parts are called, but I wish the teachers wouldn't make them say it- so do the kids lol. I do think it's cute when the kids giggle about those two words.
