My daughter has lost her first tooth! Whats appropriate these days?? She has been told (through family) that you recieve more for the very first...and I do agree. So whats a first tooth go for these days?????

By Kate on Thursday, December 30, 2004 - 03:48 pm:

I don't know...I think mine only got 50 cents and a bunch of pennies...

By Jackie on Thursday, December 30, 2004 - 03:48 pm:

We have (the toothfairy has) only gives 1 dollar.. For us, whether its the first lost tooth or the 5th, you get 1$. Who knows, we may just be the cheapo family LOL

By Janet on Thursday, December 30, 2004 - 03:57 pm:

Our tooth fairy is pretty stingy, LOL! She gives shiny quarters for regular teeth, but has been known to give gold dollar coins for molars, or ones that were particularly hard in coming out. (She's also left foreign coins, which are pretty cool) :)

By Tink on Thursday, December 30, 2004 - 03:57 pm:

I gave a gold dollar coin for the first with a note telling her how proud I was that she had taken such good care of her teeth and that I would be happy to see more of her teeth in the next few years. The note was written in very tiny letters on a small piece of scrapbooking paper and covered in gold glitter and put in a little velvet pouch. Now she just gets a crisp dollar bill covered in gold glitter. My dd has friends that get $5 each time so I guess we are cheapo, too!

By Janet on Thursday, December 30, 2004 - 03:58 pm:

PS...be forewarned...there will always be those classmates who get $5 or more for their teeth! Have your story ready for when your dd asks why!

By Yjja123 on Thursday, December 30, 2004 - 03:58 pm:

We have done a variety of things.
Generally the tooth fairy leaves a $2 bill, a letter, and fairy dust (glitter).
My daughter had a lot of baby teeth pulled (as none fell out on their own) so for 5 teeth she got $10 bill, a toy and a letter and fairy dust.
Anything goes.

Here is one type of letter. You can get clipart of tooth fairys online and write a fun letter.

Good Morning, [NAME]

Last night when I was in [YOUR CITY], I flew in and looked under your pillow. I found the tooth you left there! Someone who loves you told me that you just lost a tooth and they were right. What a fine tooth it is too. It will be one of the best in my collection, I think.

Losing a tooth means you are growing up and you have many new experiences to look forward to. Your baby teeth have to fall out to make room for your grown up teeth.

[NAME], you must be sure to take excellent care of your grown up teeth so you will have them all your life. That means, brushing often and eating the right foods.

To thank you for leaving such a fine and important tooth for me, I have left a little something for you too.

Your special friend,

The Tooth Fairy

$5 for the first tooth and $1 for each subsequent tooth with a letter of explanation.

By Kaye on Thursday, December 30, 2004 - 04:56 pm:

We do two dollars for the first tooth, a buck each one after. We don't leave notes, just me saying wow, 2 dollars you got the first tooth bonus! I also try to leave dollar coins, they think that is extra cool. But it doesn't always happen. We have had many a tooth pulled out at 10 pm while they were in bed, I am not running to the store at that hour!

We went to the bank and got Susan B Anthony dollar coins for our son to slip under Nichole's pillow. It just seemed more special to get the unusual gold coins. When our boys were little we used silver dollars.

By Annie2 on Thursday, December 30, 2004 - 05:28 pm:

The toothfairy leaves a dollar for each tooth. Usually not for molars just the "smile" teeth. With for little kids the toothfairy wouldn't get any sleep if money was given for each molar.
If we happen to be on vacation each tooth is worth $5.00. This has happened only once in 14 years but the kids have never forgotten the going rate for a vacation tooth. Actually it was all the tooth fairy had at the time. LOL!

By Marcia on Thursday, December 30, 2004 - 06:03 pm:

Ours leaves a loonie ($1 coin) or toonie ($2 coin) - whatever she has on her that night. LOL

By Lauram on Thursday, December 30, 2004 - 07:33 pm:

$1 a tooth in our house. That is very funny about the vacation teeth. BTDT trying to scramble for money. My son has a knack for losing teeth at bedtime! I'm always afraid I'm going to have to go to the ATM and get a $20 bill out! :)

By Brandy on Thursday, December 30, 2004 - 09:42 pm:

Well our toothe fairy leaves $1 for each toothe unless it's pulled or has a cap and then it's $2 i think lol Nick had to have one pulled the other day well about 1 month ago and the one of the nurses says okay i think that's about a $5 toothe i'm like nope that a $2 toothe = ) i hate when people are like that..It's like it's my child i decide what they get unless of course they are willing to pitch in the rest = )

By Breann on Thursday, December 30, 2004 - 10:12 pm:

By Paulas on Thursday, December 30, 2004 - 10:47 pm:

I posted last summer about when my ds lost his first tooth. We "trapped the Tooth Fairy" in a shoe box. He got a note and 5 one dollar bills. He lost another one a few weeks later and he got another 5. We only have one kid, and he really saves his money so we give him more cuz he dosen't just want to go get candy all the time. I can't remember who said they also give their kids tooth paste and a tooth brush. I'm gonna do that next time ds looses a tooth.

After reading this post I asked DH tonight what we are going to give the girls and this is what he said.."Well, I got $2 for a tooth when I was little, so given the rate of inflation, they should get $5"..I have been laughing ever since he said that. He really put some thought into it..lol SO I guess $5 a tooth for our girls from the tooth fairy.

I remember getting a ton of quarters, but when I was little I thought coins were better than paper money. My sister would always trick me into giving her my paper money for her pennies...such a mean big sister..lol :)

By Bellajoe on Friday, December 31, 2004 - 03:26 pm:

My dd lost her first tooth on Christmas this year. She got $1 for her first tooth which she thought was pretty cool. The tooth fairy was easily tricked. She had actually swallowed her tooth accidentally while she was eating her pb&j sandwich. She got so upset when we mentioned to her that she might have swallowed it. So my dh pretended to find it and wrap it in tissue. Luckily she put it under her pillow without looking at it. We felt bad lying to her but she would have been really upset if she thought she swallowed her tooth.

I don't remember what i got for a tooth. I know it wasn't paper money!
How gross is this...my mil still has a jar of the teeth my dh and bil lost when they were little. Why? I don't know!

By Imamommyx4 on Friday, December 31, 2004 - 07:57 pm:

Gross it may be but I have first teeth that the boys lost in an envelope with each boys name on it.

By Pixie on Sunday, January 2, 2005 - 01:30 am:

Thanks to all who posted! We gave her $15 for the first tooth and have decided on $3-$5 for the rest of them. I had so much fun with it! Yjja I used the letter you posted with the first tooth, and also found a certificate online. So she recieved the money, the letter and a certificate. I dusted everything with sparkling "Fairy Dust". DD was so exited noticed every last detail the Tooth Fairy put into it. She lost her second one this evening and I typed another letter listing some tips on caring for you teeth and a few other little things, also in a pretty pink font and again everything was touched with fairy dust. So much fun!!!!
