A Curves question

Moms View Message Board: Let's Get Fit! (Weight Loss Support Group): A Curves question
By Colette on Sunday, March 6, 2005 - 09:45 am:

Hi, thought I'd post on the fitness board rather than the general discussion on this. For those of you that have done Curves. How long did you do it?, are you still doing it?, or did you quit because of plateauing or getting bored? I went Friday for information and go back tomorrow for the girl to go over all of the machines w/me and to see if I want to sign up. I am thinking of doing it monthly, which is a little more expensive, because I've got a funny feeling that after a few months it's going to get old. It is definately more expensive than a regular gym, but I don't want to go to a regular gym. So, I know this has been posted before but just some opinions on it please?

I did it for about 13-14 months. I ended up quitting because of the hours. It didn't reall get "old" but did become routine. They do mix it up every now and then with contests, backwards days (do the machines counterclockwise) and fun stuff like that. Another way to mix things up is to go at a different time of day than you normally do. There's a whole different group of people there at different times. Do it monthly for a few months to see if you want to join for the whole year. I liked it and wish they had longer hours.

Thanks Cat! Can you only go for 30 minutes? Can you go more than 3 days a week?

I just joined this week so I don't have any advice for you but I am enjoying it so far. Like you, I signed up to pay monthly. I did it b/c I thought that I might do other things in the summer.

Colette, you can go every day if you want! Ours is closed on Sundays, but they are open every other day. Saturdays it's only open from like 8-12. That's the one day I could go! I'm seriously thinking of joining again, because I could make it most Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays. Not all, but probably at least 2-3 days a week, including Saturday morning. When I was going, they had enough machines that 2 1/2 rounds was 30 minutes, but you could do three whole rounds if you wanted, and some people did more. They don't kick you out at 30 minutes. Really, I saw more weight loss (without dieting) when I went every other day, instead of every day. That was just my experience. Hope it helps. :)

I'm also a Curves member. I've been going for two months now. Ours is adding new machines every 6 weeks so that has helped keep boredom at bay and we also have contests and silly games most days. They really recommend only going three days a week since the bulk of the exercise is muscular. the day between allows your muscles to heal. Healing is when your muscles build up, although at this resistance, bulking up won't ever be a problem. I also like the fact that it is routine. Then I let my body go about its business while I chat with the other ladies. I'm also hoping that by making a year commitment, I won't want to waste the money I'm paying them each month! So far, I've found a great feeling of community there.

I've been going to Curves for over eight months now, and I love it! I usually go three days a week and walk the other days. If the weather is not good for walking, then I go on to Curves instead. My local Curves is great, and I never get bored! We have more machines than a lot of other Curves I have heard about, and we have something fun going on all the time.
