Dandruff or something else?

Moms View Message Board: Parenting Discussion: Dandruff or something else?
By Bellajoe on Thursday, May 10, 2007 - 08:02 pm:

My 6 yr old ds has a very very dry scalp. He's got flaky white stuff in his hair which is obviously dandruff. But then he's got bigger white patches on his scalp. Just looking at it, it looks like he has white paint in his hair. You can only see it if you move his hair around and then it all starts flaking off. He says it doesn't itch him at all, and I have never seen him scratching his head.

I got some Head and Shoulders shampoo and conditioner but it doesn't seem to be helping.

Has anyone experienced this? What did you use and did it work?

thanks for your help!

My son had this and he uses T-Sal shampoo by Neutrogena. No more flaky scalp!

I can second the T-Sal. We've used it on our ds as well.

I think someone here suggested T-Sal awhile back. I tried it on dd and saw an improvement right away. It works wonders.

Another vote for T-Sal, worked wonders for my ds.

I would, however, take him to the drs to get a diagnosis.

Does he wash his own hair or do you still do it? My dd had some white stuff on her head that I thought was dandruff, but when I took her to get her hair cut, they told her to make sure she was really scrubbing and rinsing well. The areas she had the spots were right where she plops the shampoo on her head from her hands. They said that she needed to work it around better in that direct area and rinse better. Once they told her that, It was cleared up within a few days. Not saying that is the case, but he may not be breaking down the shampoo and rinsing well enough!

That's what I thought it was too, Vicki. But I told him to rinse better and I've helped or watched him wash his hair the last several times, and it's still like that.

I'm going to get the T-Sal stuff today. I'm going to pay a $25 co-pay for dandruff, not yet anyway.
